How to Stay Safe While Using Your Generator

Before operating a generator there are many things you should know. These machines do not mess around; they are powerful and can cause serious damage. Here are some generator safety tips to follow to keep you and others free from danger.

Generators should never run indoors or in enclosed spaces. Injuries and deaths related to generators are mostly due to carbon monoxide poisoning caused by generators being used in areas that are not well ventilated. Opening doors and windows is not sufficient enough to prevent the buildup of the potentially fatal poison. These machines should always run outside, and be placed at a minimum of fifteen feet away from windows, doors, and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to enter your home.  If you find yourself feeling sick, weak, or dizzy, when operating a generator, seek fresh air at once. Since it cannot be seen or smelled, having a carbon monoxide detector can give you peace of mind that the harmful toxin is not in your home.

You should never refuel the generator while it is running. You should turn the machine off, and give it ample time to cool off before adding more fuel. A fire can occur as the result of spilling fuel on the hot surface. Letting the engine cool before refueling also reduces the chances of being burned during the process.

Generators should never operate in wet conditions. This includes when it is raining. However, with proper covering and venting, it can be safe for use during precipitation. The manufacturer will have recommendations for how to properly operate the generator under tents specifically designed for your model. If you are standing in water or have wet hands, you should not work with your generator as well.

Another generator safety tip is to not attempt to backfeed your home. This happens when the generator is plugged directly into a wall outlet. This is an extremely dangerous thing to do, and creates the threat of electrocution for utility workers and neighbors relying on the same utility transformer. There is also an increased risk of excess current and electrical fire for your appliances and electronics. Instead you should install a transfer switch before running a generator. This allows the machine to connect to your circuit panel and power hardwired appliances without the safety risk of using extension cords.

In preparation for using the generator, you may want to keep extra fuel at your home. It is important for fuel to be properly stored and only use approved containers. Keep the fuel away from living areas, and combustion appliances. Your local fire department can provide suggestions on appropriate storage locations if you are unsure.

Thinking of Upgrading Your Outlets? We Can Help!

Functionality and appearance are just some of the reasons that a person may want to change their current outlets. The design of receptacles has progressed to perform several purposes beyond just plugging a cord into the wall. Hidden dangers may be hiding in your outlets as well. Here are some things to consider when you are in the market for power outlets.

USB power outlets are a great option to eliminate bulky chargers and adaptors. This allows you to plug devices directly into the outlet, and frees up the plug-in space you would have needed before. This is extremely convenient for those who find they lack the proper outlet access for their needs, and need to frequently charge their phone.

There are many benefits to switching to a LED night light outlet. This option provides longer light without taking up any plug spaces like a traditional night light would. You will also save money because this style has a life expectancy of twenty years. Your children will no longer fear the darkness of night, and you will spend less money too.

Tamper resistant receptacles are a very safety conscious option. These are designed with a barrier that makes it impossible for children to insert foreign objects into the outlet. No longer will you have to worry about your son or daughter being shocked or burned. The peace of mind is well worth the price to upgrade.

If you find plugged in cords sticking out from the wall to be annoying, recessed electrical outlets are the perfect alternative. This model places the outlets deeper in the wall to ensure that the plugs do not extend beyond the surface. Recessed power outlets also opens up more furniture placement options as there is no longer any plugs hanging out to cause interference.

Cracked electrical outlet plates may seem harmless, but they are actually fire hazards. The accumulation of dust, lint, and hair in the cracks can act as kindling. This problem can also occur in undersized wall plates. Dust can even explode in certain situations. Clogs can develop in the outlet due to dust buildup. To eliminate the chances of your house burning down, you should replace your outlet covers as soon as possible.

If you are thinking of selling your home, even the smallest upgrade can make a world of difference to potential buyers. Without spending thousands of dollars, simply changing the power outlets can transform rooms. Appearance is an important aspect of real estate, so any damaged outlets will affect how people think of your home, and can turn them away from making an offer. New electrical outlets are a cheap way to positively alter how buyers feel about your place.

At Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, we can upgrade your outlets for you. We specialize in residential service changes, breaks in service, storm repairs, and upgrades. What Is a Circuit Breaker?

The circuit breaker is a critical device to ensure safety in your home in the modern age. The electrical service panel consists of a series of lever-operated circuit breakers. After the predetermined amperage load is met, each circuit breaker is programmed to turn itself off. The individual amperage amount varies, which is the reason that there are different size breakers in the panel. When the limit is attained, the breaker trips to open the circuit in order to stop the flow of current to that specific circuit or electrical line. The ability to halt the current from reaching the overloaded or short circuit, allows for the issue to be repaired safely.

There are several reasons that can make circuit breakers trip. The following are the three most common. If you have an overloaded circuit, the breaker will shut off. This happens when multiple devices are plugged into the same circuit, and once they are all running, the capacity of the electrical wiring is exceeded. A short circuit occurs when an appliance has a wiring problem that results in additional current to be pulled. A ground fault generally occurs in high moisture environments such as the bathroom and kitchen. The GFCI, ground fault circuit interrupter, is an instrument that is able to detect when a current is flowing on an unintentional path and then shuts the electrical circuit off. This inadvertent pathway can be running through a puddle of water or an individual. The GFCI device reduces the chances of electric shock, which could cause serious burns or heart problems. Fires that are brought about by a metal conduit making contact with a live wire are prevented, as well. GFCIs exist to keep anyone from enduring harm rather than protect the wiring of the structure.

When a circuit breaker trips, the result is an outlet or area of your home not having any power. It is very simple to reset circuit breakers once you have located your breaker box. After opening the door to the breaker box, you will see toggles that look like light switches turned sideways. Most should be aiming toward the center of the panel which indicates that it is currently on. Toggles that are switched away from the panel center are off. Any toggles that are positioned in the middle are the ones that have been tripped. To reset, you must turn the breaker off before turning it back on. If it trips again, it is best to just turn it off without attempting to reset it. This can indicate a larger problem that should be left to a professional electrician.

Would Your Home Benefit from Solar Panels?

If you find your monthly energy bills to be too high, there is an alternative option to reduce them. Solar energy relies on natural light to power your home. There are some considerations to keep in mind before putting solar panels on your roof, as some homes are better suited than others.

To receive the most production of energy in the northern hemisphere, it is best to have a south-facing orientation. This has the most direct sunlight exposure. The ideal to place solar panels is on an area that is within forty degrees of directly south to guarantee optimal generation. You can have panels installed on flat roofs or mounted to the ground, but the system will be tilted to ensure the highest south-facing exposure.
Your home is a good candidate for solar panels if there is minimal shading. If you have tall trees surrounding your house, this will shield the sun from reaching the panels. When living in the city, adjacent taller buildings also produce shade. You may have the option to remove any obstructions if you are certain you want a solar energy system for your home.

The amount of roof space you have will be a factor in how much of a benefit you obtain. Panels can be installed around vent pipes, skylights, and chimneys. However, obstructions will reduce the space for panels. Ample room for the solar technology allows for the greatest return on energy. If your roof features dormers, this will also have an impact.

Solar panels are becoming more popular, and for a good reason. Since 2010, the cost of installation has decreased by more than 70 percent. Relying on solar energy for power can equate to saving over $100 every month. You can also start seeing a return on investment from day one. Solar also offers stable energy expenses, so you do not have to deal with a nearby utility provider that is continuously changing. Solar panels are a great selling point if you ever put your home on the market. Houses equipped with solar panels are sold an average of twenty percent faster. They also have a market value worth about seventeen percent more.

If you are worried about your environmental footprint, making the switch to solar energy will have a positive effect on the ecosystem. The carbon dioxide emissions released by a car travelling 100,000 miles is offset by using solar panels. Your solar equipment will be around for a while, as well. The industry standard promises that after 25 years your solar panels will still be producing at 80% performance. Solar energy is also a step towards reducing dependency on foreign energy. Around 40% of the United States imports are a combination of coal, oil, and natural gas products.

For all your electrical needs, rely on Rose Brothers & Sons Electric. We are available for all types of electrical problems from residential to commercial to industrial. Making Sure Your Outlets Are Child-Proof

Electrical outlets are an essential component of your home, but they are also dangerous. Almost every room has several electrical outlets, so it is imperative to keep these elements from being hazardous to your children. There are a multitude of child-proof options for your outlets.

If your home was built after 2015, you should already have tamper-proof outlets. The national electric code requires the use of these as they prevent the insertion of small items. Even with a newly constructed house, you should double-check to ensure all the outlets are tamper resistant. When looking at the electrical outlets, you will be able to tell which kind you have. The old type has slots that are very open, making them unsafe. If you have an older home, it is almost assuredly a regular electrical outlet. The newer tamper-proof outlets have plastic behind the slot openings. The plastic is spring-loaded shutters, which require both prong slots to be pushed in at the same time for the plastic to move. There is also a third style of outlet known as decora outlets, which are not child-proof. They do not need screws to attach the cover, instead the cover just snaps on. It is crucial to know which outlets your home uses, as baby-proof solutions are not viable options for every type.

If you have unused electric outlets, there are a few ways to make them safe for your family. For a simple and cheap option, you can use plastic outlet caps also called safe plates. They fit into the slots just like a plug would. The outside of the cap uses plastic that has no grips, so a baby will not be able to remove them. This option however is inconvenient as every time you use the outlet, you will have to take the cap out and then plug it back in afterwards. Another route is sliding plate covers. They cost more but are safer. To install, you simply have to replace your current outlet covers with the spring-load sliding ones. If you push the plate cover over, it will automatically slide back in place. You also never have to worry about forgetting to put a cap back on.

For outlets in use, you can use a Lectralock, which will completely cover the plugged in cords. This shield will not allow a toddler to open it. They are also compatible for both regular and decorative outlets. Power strips will also need to be baby-proofed. An easy solution is a cover like the Safety 1st model. These conceal all the outlets and plugs. There is an opening for the cords but it is impossible for kids to pull out the plugs or stick small things into the power strip.

At Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, we can take care of any electrical issues you have. Unlike other electricians, we don’t use a quick fix approach to solve problems. We find and correct the source of the complication, so you never have to worry about it again. We are located in Walton, KY and provide service to Cincinnati and Northern KY.

Tips for Saving Money on Your Energy Bills

Monthly energy bills are an unavoidable expense. If your bill is causing your bank account pain, there are some simple methods to increase your energy efficiency and save you money.

If your home requires air conditioning and heating, there are some tricks to ensure you get the most from your money. Make sure all the vents are open and clear. Closing vents to prevent access to certain rooms does not limit energy consumption. This is a myth that will result in increasing your energy expenses. Air filters in your vents need to be replaced on a monthly basis or proper airflow will be restricted. The filters eliminate the unnecessary particles, like dust and dirt, from circulating in your home. You can purchase filters in bulk which will work out to one to two dollars for each. Measure your vents to ensure you get the correct size.

Altering your laundry routine can help save you money. When your washer is running, 90% of the energy the machine consumes is used for heating the water. Washing your clothes in cold water has multiple benefits. On top of reducing your energy costs, the colors will not bleed as much. This can allow you to mix light and dark loads with no worries of dyeing your clothes. Make sure you are not adding too many articles of clothing in your load of laundry. If there is no room for movement in the dryer, the heat will not be able to properly dry all items. You may have to do another cycle in the dryer, which is an unnecessary energy expense. To use the machines at the most effective rate, there should 25% of unfilled space in the washer and dryer. Some power companies offer lower rates during non-peak hours. Most commonly the discount begins at eight PM, so this is when you should start doing your laundry to save money. If doing your chores at this hour is possible, your wallet will surely benefit from the switch. The time will vary by utility company, so be sure to contact your energy provider.

Turning off lights when you leave rooms is an easy way to cut down on energy waste. Lighting accounts for 20% of your energy bill, so it would be valuable to switch out your lightbulbs for a more energy efficient option, like LED lightbulbs. The cost to light 10 incandescent bulbs for an hour every day is $24 a year. However, you only have to pay $5 annually to power 10 LED lightbulbs for an hour each day. These savings are possible because LEDs are 80% more efficient than incandescent bulbs.

These are small changes that can improve the energy efficiency of your home. At Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, we are a locally-owned and operated business. We are focused on saving our clients time and money by finding the root of the problem and solving it quickly and efficiently. Other electricians can be fixated on fixing the issue at the surface but not the actual cause. We are located in Walton, KY and provide service to Cincinnati and Northern KY.

The Ins and Outs of Outdoor Accent Lighting

First impressions are everything! This goes for meeting new people, when you test drive a car and of course when you pull up to someone’s home for the first time. But don’t forget about your home. If your grass is uncut and your siding is peeling, people might jump to unfortunate conclusions. Just like keeping up with the maintenance of your home, adding simple design touches makes your home look even better! Here at Rose Brothers & Sons Inc Electric and Construction, we can help you achieve the look you desire with accent lighting. We specialize in residential, commercial, and industrial electric construction, so no matter if you need service on your home or office, we have the right tools and professionals to make the job fast and efficient. Your home’s curb appeal can be affected by the things you choose to do and not do to the exterior of your home and lawn. Adding additional accent lighting is a great idea and can have a major impact on your home, but where should you place your new lighting? Well since the way to get to your home is to drive up your driveway, we should start there. You can purchase a variety of styles of accent lighting for your driveway. You can choose to have solar LED lights in the form of in-ground or above-ground posts. The best thing about lighting up your driveway with solar lights is that it won’t reflect on your energy bill.

Flowers and gardens also play a big role in curb appeal. If you have a beautiful flower bed, why should it be hidden in the dark? Adding accent lighting to your flower bed will highlight nature’s beauty throughout the night and late evenings.

Homes always come with porch and garage lighting. But if you want your home to stand out in a good way, adding down lighting, up lighting, or cross lighting to the exterior can be the solution. Each lighting position brings a different effect to your home and landscape, so no matter if you want a dramatic or romantic feel, our installation crew can achieve it.

electrical safety inspection

It may be the holiday season, but it is always the season to practice safety and to be prepared for unforeseen events. With all of the shopping and decorating, it would not be hard to miss out on something that could cause potential harm to your family in the far or near future. Busy schedules can definitely get in the way of inspecting your home, which is why you should always let the professionals do the work for you. Our electricians at Rose Brothers & Sons Inc. We can handle anything from smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector installation to circuit breaker replacement or underground cabling. With the new year right around the corner, think about making your New Year’s resolution to be keeping you and your family safe year-round by getting an electrical safety inspection.

Everyone knows that when you are in the process of buying or selling a home, at some point, you will have to get a professional electrician to conduct an inspection. Did you know that you should also inspect your home throughout the years for safety purposes? One of the main reasons for house fires is faulty wiring. We do not expect you to be able to solve this problem on your own, but there are some clues to help you figure out if you should get an electrical safety inspection. Have you ever plugged in an iron, toaster, or vacuum cleaner and notice that the lights in the rest of the room flickered or got dim? If so, that could be a big sign that your home has some faulty wiring. It would be smart to get an electrical inspection before something accidentally catches on fire, which could happen easily during the month of December.

Decorating for Christmas is always exciting, but with a large display of lights outside and a light-covered tree comes an over loaded electrical outlet. Power strips can help reduce your risk, but you will never be 100% safe using every port without inspecting your home. A lot of furnaces produce carbon monoxide, so it is crucial to get an inspection due to the extensive use of heat during the winter and holiday season. This could be dangerous because carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, making it impossible for you to know if you are breathing it in until it is too late. You and your family’s health, safety, and well-being are nothing to take chances on. Give Rose Brothers & Sons Electric and Construction a call today! We are ready to put your family out of harm’s way.

With over 41 years of experience, you can be confident that our friendly experts at Rose Brothers & Sons Electric will give your home a thorough inspection. We are located in Walton, KY and would be glad to assist you in making your home safer for the holiday season. Give us a call today!

Does Your Home Need New Outlets

While it may seem like an easy job, it can take much more than a quick scan of your room to determine if your home needs new outlets. Even if you have “hidden” outlets that are out of sight and out of mind, they still need to be inspected and potentially replaced. Regularly inspecting your outlets could save you from overlooking clues to determine if you should upgrade or not. At Rose Brothers & Son’s Electric and Construction, we know the importance of properly wired and visually appealing electrical outlets because they have the potential to be extremely harmful if the issues are left untreated. We are located in Walton, KY, so let us help you get your home in the best shape it has been in since you bought it. If you have a newly built home, we need to make sure it stays in tip top shape. For decades, we have been assisting residents in Northern KY and Cincinnati with electrical contracting and residential services, and we would be thrilled to be trusted with any task you throw our way.

Selling a home can be an overwhelming process with all of the improvements and updates you or a hired professional might have to make. You can save yourself some hassle by regularly inspecting your power outlets while living in your home. Even though you are checking your outlets, do you know what you should be looking for? One thing that should get your attention is cracks in your outlet plate. Not because they are unpleasant to look at, but because they can be a prime location for house fires to begin, and nobody wants to get that call. Dust can build up in your home, no matter how often you try to clean it, and it can be anywhere, even into those cracks in your power outlet. The dust builds up in those cracks, and that is how fires start and homes are ruined.

When buying a new home, you should always get the home inspected, because it’s somewhere you are planning to house your family. That inspection should not just be on the roof or the foundation, but should also include the electrical system. Our team members at Rose Brothers & sons Inc. Electrical and Construction, can provide you with a detailed electric system inspection along with many other skills and services. We know how much home buyers love homes with character, like historic homes. The only problem with historic homes is that they are usually at least a century old, and that means the home’s electrical system will need some updating and rewiring. Two prong outlets can be dangerous to you and your expensive gadgets. If you happen to visit a home that has a lot of two prong outlets rather than having three prong power outlets, then you know you will have some work to do if you decide to buy. However, you won’t have to do it alone, because we are always ready to assist you.
