Spruce Up Your Space With The Right Lights

the right lightsWinter is slowly fading into spring and despite the cold outside and April showers, you can enjoy your home with these fresh ideas to spruce up your space with the right lights.  If you’re tired of looking at the same four walls and want to create a welcoming atmosphere, we’ll show you how adding the right lighting can not only create a warm setting but save your eyes as well.

Entryway Spruce Ups

As local Northern Kentucky electricians, we can tell you first hand how much curb appeal is refreshed with the right lighting.  Not only are outdoor lights at your entryway important for you and your guests for obvious reasons: like seeing to get your keys in the door or seeing whose at the door.  Outdoor lighting if it’s done right can bring a welcoming charm to your entryway.  With the right lighting you can create a night time curb appeal that is fit for entertaining or adding charm to you or your neighbors nighttime stroll.

Foyer & Hall Lights

Just as important as outside lights, the next area of your home to capture the attention of guests is your foyer.  A foyer often sets the stage for the rest of your home.  Even if you store shoes and coats at your entryway, you can add a beautiful light fixture or ceiling fan to the area to add light and brighten up the space.  Some homes have dramatic entrance areas complete with chandelier and sconce lights.  No matter what your choices for lighting your hall or foyer, you can call your electricians at Rose Brothers & Sons Electric to help you create the look you’re after.  With a thousand options for lighting, no one should be left in the dark.

Kitchen Lights

Whether you are a seasoned cook or just beginning, having the right kitchen lights to get the job done is important.  Task lights, under counter lights and a good source of overhead light will keep you seeing what you’re doing.  Many people spend a great deal of time in the kitchen area.  It is often where people gather during holidays and other festivities.  If the kitchen doesn’t have pleasing lights, it can make you tired or make you loose the party spirit.  Lights do matter and having the right light fixtures followed by the correct light makes a world of difference.

Bedroom Lighting

Another area of the home where lighting is important and often overlooked is the bedroom.  Many people read in bed. Having the right lights to make reading in bed comfortable is a must have.  You may find that having a light switch by the bed would be helpful too. This is a great way to stay out of the dark where you might trip and fall.  As an electrician in Northern Kentucky, we have seen many different requests for different lighting in the bedroom. No matter what age your bedroom is for, there are reasons why lighting is important and having lights that work the way you want them to when you want them to is equally important.

Recessed Lights in Northern Kentucky

recessed lights in Northern KentuckyRecessed lighting in Northern Kentucky can make a huge difference in the look and function of your kitchen or living room.  When you choose recessed lighting it is a good idea to decide beforehand what is most important to you, looks or function?  Having all the lights line up or form a pattern may look neat on the ceiling but not really provide the light you were hoping for.  Your electrician in Northern Kentucky can help you design your lighting to look and function well.

Recessed Lights in the Kitchen

As a rule of thumb, for homes with 8’ or 9’ ceilings, you should space the recessed lights every 5 or 6 feet apart for standard 6” recessed cans.  This can be a challenge if you are working towards centering them with your upper cabinets.  It is usually better to have them closer than further apart.

You should have recessed lights centered on both sides of the range.  Also a recessed light centered at the sink area.  This light is often placed on a separate switch so you can use it to do the dishes without lighting up the whole kitchen.  All remaining recessed lights should be centered with the upper cabinets and be around 5-6 feet apart and 24” -27” inches from the wall, depending on how deep the cabinets are.

The most important thing to remember is to center between 2 double cabinets and center between the cabinet door, of a single cabinet.  You also want to make sure the light hits the area on the counter where you need it and not your back or the back of your head.

Recessed Lights In the Living Room

Following the same rules, you will want to start out with recessed lighting on either side of a fireplace or entertainment center.   You may also want to have recessed lighting in places that you need extra light such as over a writing desk or to highlight a focal point in a corner.

Vaulted ceilings can also be tricky because you will want to make sure you align them to get the best use of the light.  Special recessed lights can help.

Choosing Light Bulbs

Which light bulbs you choose will determine the look of your Northern Kentucky recessed Lights.  If you use regular incandescent light bulbs you will have a yellow, warm feel.  Adding florescent light bulbs will give you a whiter look and can cost less to run.  Halogen lights are also whiter and brighter but you have an option to put them on a dimmer so that you can control how bright they are.

Installing Recessed Lights in Northern Kentucky

It is important when you choose your recessed lights to make sure that you pick lights with the right IC Rating if they are near your insulation.  Air Lock Rated recessed cans will also prevent air from escaping and help with energy efficiency.  Recessed lights also come in a variety of styles to choose from.

Rose Brothers and Sons Electric will be happy to help you with your recessed lighting in Northern Kentucky.  We have decades of experience installing recessed lighting and helping homeowners take advantage of the many different lighting options there are.  We will be happy to work with you to get the look and feel you want.  When you are thinking about adding recessed lights in Northern Kentucky, call the experts at Rose Brothers & Sons Electric.
