Installing Recessed Lighting in Your Home

A solution to remedy the unflattering lighting in your home is to switch to recessed lighting. Also known as can lights or downlights, the fixtures appear level with the ceiling which makes them suitable for spaces with low ceilings. This option is a versatile source of light that can also add to the ambiance of rooms as well. It also works well with other types of lights, such as table lamps, sconces, and candles, so you can create a well-balanced and inviting environment. However, before you install recessed lighting, you must first find the type right for you.

The housing is the light fixture itself, and holds the light bulb and trim in place. There are several types offered. New construction housing is used for homes being built or new additions to existing houses, and is put in place before the installation of the ceiling occurs. Remodel housing is designed to be installed in an existing ceiling. For lighting fixtures that will be in direct contact with insulation, there is insulation-contact rated housing. If the lighting has an attic or unconditioned space above with a conditioned room situated below, selecting airtight housing will reduce airflow as well as prevent heating and cooling energy waste. Slope ceiling housing creates enough space for the light to be angled in a sloped ceiling.

The trim is what is visible when you see the fixture; there are numerous styles to select from. The most common one is baffle trim which features a ribbed interior to minimize glare. Reflector trim has a mirrored surface to amplify the illumination given.  Another option is open trim which is flush or very close to flush with the ceiling and delivers unobstructed illumination. If you wish to use can lights to highlight a specific feature or wash the walls with light, eyeball trim is the perfect choice as you can choose the direction the light travels. For wet or humid locations there is shower trim. This style uses a tempered glass lens suitable to be installed in restrooms and over showers.

Another factor to consider is the light bulb you wish to use. Some downlight fixtures can take LED, halogen, incandescent, or fluorescent bulbs. But there are certain styles that can only use select light bulbs, typically halogen or fluorescent. The lightbulb you choose can help enhance the atmosphere you are trying to portray, as each can give off different colors. If you want to have dimmable lights, you should use fixtures reliant on LED, incandescent, or halogen light bulbs. This is due to the fact that fluorescent light bulbs cannot be dimmed unless they have dimmable ballast.

Recessed Lights in Northern Kentucky

recessed lights in Northern KentuckyRecessed lighting in Northern Kentucky can make a huge difference in the look and function of your kitchen or living room.  When you choose recessed lighting it is a good idea to decide beforehand what is most important to you, looks or function?  Having all the lights line up or form a pattern may look neat on the ceiling but not really provide the light you were hoping for.  Your electrician in Northern Kentucky can help you design your lighting to look and function well.

Recessed Lights in the Kitchen

As a rule of thumb, for homes with 8’ or 9’ ceilings, you should space the recessed lights every 5 or 6 feet apart for standard 6” recessed cans.  This can be a challenge if you are working towards centering them with your upper cabinets.  It is usually better to have them closer than further apart.

You should have recessed lights centered on both sides of the range.  Also a recessed light centered at the sink area.  This light is often placed on a separate switch so you can use it to do the dishes without lighting up the whole kitchen.  All remaining recessed lights should be centered with the upper cabinets and be around 5-6 feet apart and 24” -27” inches from the wall, depending on how deep the cabinets are.

The most important thing to remember is to center between 2 double cabinets and center between the cabinet door, of a single cabinet.  You also want to make sure the light hits the area on the counter where you need it and not your back or the back of your head.

Recessed Lights In the Living Room

Following the same rules, you will want to start out with recessed lighting on either side of a fireplace or entertainment center.   You may also want to have recessed lighting in places that you need extra light such as over a writing desk or to highlight a focal point in a corner.

Vaulted ceilings can also be tricky because you will want to make sure you align them to get the best use of the light.  Special recessed lights can help.

Choosing Light Bulbs

Which light bulbs you choose will determine the look of your Northern Kentucky recessed Lights.  If you use regular incandescent light bulbs you will have a yellow, warm feel.  Adding florescent light bulbs will give you a whiter look and can cost less to run.  Halogen lights are also whiter and brighter but you have an option to put them on a dimmer so that you can control how bright they are.

Installing Recessed Lights in Northern Kentucky

It is important when you choose your recessed lights to make sure that you pick lights with the right IC Rating if they are near your insulation.  Air Lock Rated recessed cans will also prevent air from escaping and help with energy efficiency.  Recessed lights also come in a variety of styles to choose from.

Rose Brothers and Sons Electric will be happy to help you with your recessed lighting in Northern Kentucky.  We have decades of experience installing recessed lighting and helping homeowners take advantage of the many different lighting options there are.  We will be happy to work with you to get the look and feel you want.  When you are thinking about adding recessed lights in Northern Kentucky, call the experts at Rose Brothers & Sons Electric.
