Appliances That Require Dedicated Circuits

appliances that require dedicated circuitsThere are many appliances that require dedicated circuits. In fact, if you are constantly experiencing your circuit breaker tripping or lights dimming, you may have a problem with how your breaker box is set up. This can cause not only damage to your appliances but it’s also a fire hazard. You owe it to yourself and your family to keep your electrical system safe and working properly.

What Is A Dedicated Circuit?

A dedicated circuit is a circuit breaker in your electrical box that is used for only one appliance. It in effect is dedicated to doing only that one thing. Some major appliances that draw a lot of electricity will require more than one switch we usually refer to these as double pole circuits as opposed to single pole circuits. This configuration keeps you and your home safe from fires. Double pole circuits are for appliances requiring 30-50 amps and single pole circuits are for appliances requiring 20 amps.

The Appliances That Require Dedicated Circuits

Heating and Air Conditioning Equipment

Electric Ranges and Ovens

Refrigerators and Freezers

Dishwashers

Washers and Dryers

Microwaves

Electric Fireplaces

Garage Door Openers

Car Charging Stations

Garbage Disposals

Water Heaters

Sump pumps

Jacuzzi, hot tubs and Pools

Upgrading Your Electrical Circuits

If you are adding a new appliance or an older used appliance, you need to make sure your electric is set up to handle the new addition.   You can check the rating on the new appliance or electrical equipment to determine how much electricity it will use. Many appliances are compliant with Energy Star ratings and use less electricity than older models. If you experience fluctuating power, dimming light or you are constantly throwing a breaker switch, you should call your professional electrician in Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky and have your electrical system checked out. Is A Standby Generator Right For You?

is a standby generator right for you?Is a standby generator right for you? Homeowners often ask us if we suggest they buy a back up system for their electric. There are many reasons why this is necessary in some cases. The most obvious is if a family member is on medical equipment that requires backup power. Equipment like this often has it’s own backup power supply. If not, then having a standby generator is a must have in our opinion.

How Does A Standby Generator Work?

A standby generator uses gas or propane as fuel. When there is a power outage, a transfer switch recognizes the outage and transfers power to the backup generator from your electrical panel. When the power returns to the home, the power is then switched back to the home’s electricity. You can have a whole house generator or a smaller unit that powers just some of the circuits. Power outages are quite frequent in some areas. In Northern Kentucky, we often have outages when extreme storms are in the area. Heavy snow and ice can down trees and cause outages too. While a portable generator will energize your home for a day, a standby generator theoretically could give energy to your home for many days.

Is A Standby Generator Right For You?

Besides the obvious need for medical patients to avoid power outages and blackouts, many people feel a backup generator would be a huge convenience. There are a few things to consider before you run out and buy one. Installing a standby generator is not a DIY project by any means. A professional electrician and plumber will be needed to hook the generator to your home. Many areas have restrictions on noise and may not approve of a generator. Other towns don’t have the current to handle a large unit. Before you consider installing a standby generator it is important that you consider all the options and research the generators that would benefit you before you decide. Is a standby generator right for you? As you can see that’s not an easy yes or no question. We would be happy to review your electrical needs and assess your home’s electrical usage to determine if you can use a standby generator and if so how big a unit would work in your home. If you have questions about your electrical usage or power, call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric today.

Losing Power To Your Refrigerator

losing power to your refrigeratorLosing power to your refrigerator can result in ruining food. This can get costly, especially if you have a lot of things in your freezer.  If you have lost power to your refrigerator, there are a few things you can check.

GFCI Receptacles

Many of the outlets in your kitchen are required to be GFCI receptacles.  These outlet prevent shock and are great in areas where water may cause a problem.  They shouldn’t be used for refrigerators though.  The GFCI receptacle often trips and is very sensitive.  It will turn off if it detects a slight possible problem.  That is what it’s designed to do.  This is a real problem if you have your refrigerator plugged into a receptacle of this type.  You could spoil all of your food if your refrigerator went off and you didn’t notice it.  If your losing power to your refrigerator and you have it plugged into a GFCI outlet, push the button to reset the outlet.  Have your electrician replace the outlet with a regular receptacle as soon as possible.

Circuit Breaker Blowing

If you have a circuit breaker that is blowing, you may have too many things attached to the breaker.  You may also have faulty wires or a faulty circuit breaker.  You also may have a problem with your refrigerator.  Your professional electrician will be able to tell you if the problem is in your wiring or if it is in the refrigerator itself.

Losing Power to Your Refrigerator

If you cannot restore the power to your refrigerator, you can use an extension cord to plug your refrigerator into until your electrician arrives.  If you are unable to find power, you can use your cooler to keep things cold.  Call your electrician for emergency repairs so that you get power to your refrigerated items quickly.  Your electrician in Northern Kentucky at Rose Brothers and Sons Electric is available 24/7 to help with all your electrical repairs.

Why Do Sparks Come Out Of My Outlet?

why do sparks come out of my outlet? We often get calls from people wondering, “Why do sparks come out of my outlet?”.  This is a common question many homeowners face.  If you haven’t seen a spark coming from your outlet recently, you probably will soon enough.  Why? Because an arc at the outlet is a common occurrence.   Don’t get the idea that because it can happen often that it isn’t signally a problem though.  Here’s why:

Why Your Outlet Sparks

Current goes through your house very quickly.  Appliances and items you plug into your outlet draws the current out.  If you unplug your appliance while it is still on, you can cause a spark.  This can happen on appliances like your iron that don’t have an on/off switch but are turned on by turning the temperature knob up from zero.  You can avoid this kind of spark by making sure the appliance is turned off before unplugging or plugging it in.  When appliances are unplugged before turning them off, it causes the wires to get hot. This in turn can melt the insulation and cause a short circuit.

When Your Outlet Sparks Too Often

If you notice your outlet sparking often or sparking no matter what is plugged in, you should call your local electrician to examine the outlet. Don’t leave the question, “Why do sparks come out of my outlet?”, unanswered.  If your outlet is older or if the insulation has melted, you could have a short circuit.  This is a “hot” wire that could burn your house down.  A professional electrician can make sure your outlet is safe and fix a short circuit.  Like everything else in your home, your wiring can get old and worn out.  Fixing the wiring when you notice a problem will protect you, your family and your belongings.

Why Do Sparks Come Out of My Outlet?

There are a few possible answers when you ask why sparks come out of an outlet.  Any time you have a question about your electricity and especially when it involves a spark, you should call your electrician to have them check if something is wrong.  Don’t spend time worrying about a problem when the fix is a phone call away.  If you have trouble with a short circuit at your outlet or you notice sparks, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric.  We will be happy to help.

Hiring An Electrician To Move Your Washer and Dryer

Hiring an electrician to move your washer and dryerIf you are thinking about relocating your laundry room, hiring an electrician to move your washer and dryer may be a good idea.  If you are unsure what electricity you need for your washer or dryer, an electrician can help you stay within budget and keep you safe.

Dedicated Dryer Circuits

Your washer and dryer should have a dedicated 240v circuit.  This means it will be wired to the circuit breaker and be on it’s own breaker.   Your professional electrician can make sure when you’re wiring a new laundry room that it is done according to electrical codes and building codes.

GFCI Outlets

The outlets near your washer and dryer will most likely need to be GFCI outlets to protect them from water.  Because it is not uncommon for your washer to overflow, you should most likely have GFCI outlets throughout the room just to be safe.

Dryer Vents

You cannot just move the dryer vent in some cases.  The vent needs to be the right length and put in properly to avoid lent getting stuck in the vent.  This is a possible fire hazard.  You should also use the right type vent material in the wall.  The accordion type vent or soft flex aluminum vent is for the space between your dryer and the wall only.

Hiring An Electrician To Move Your Washer and Dryer

When it comes to laundry room wiring, hiring an electrician to move your washer and dryer, makes the most sense.  You shouldn’t attempt wiring a new laundry room unless you know what you’re doing.  Improper wiring can be a safety hazard and can cause a problem should you have an accident or fire.  Your insurance may not cover a problem if the wiring is not done correctly.  If you are considering hiring an electrician to move your washer and dryer, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric and they will be happy to help you.

How To Connect Two Wires Together Using A Wire Nut

how to connect two wires together using a wire nutThis is how to connect two wires together using a wire nut. If you are working on anything electric, you should always turn the electricity off or unplug the appliance you’re working on before you start. Any Northern Kentucky Electrician will tell you that if you are unfamiliar with electricity or circuitry it is always a good idea to call a professional electrician and don’t attempt DIY repairs.   There are specific electrical codes that require the right connections and the right size wire nuts.  Electricity is not only dangerous to work with but repairs that are done poorly or incorrectly pose a fire hazard that is not worth the risk. This is how to connect two wires together using a wire nut the correct way.  If you are attempting to fix a broken lamp cord or extension cord, it is often safer to buy a new cord or lamp than use a cord that has been mended.  This is not a how to mend cords.

Strip Wire Insulation

Electrical wires are insulated for protection from heat and to keep the wires from touching. Find the end of the wire you want to splice and using a wire cutter or wire stripping tool, you will first strip the insulation off the wire about an inch. Look at your wire stripper and you will notice holes with numbers. These numbers refer to the gauge size of the wire. Insert your wire into the proper hole and holding the wire with your fingers or pliers, pull the wire through the hole. It should strip the end of insulation.

Twist the Wires

After you have stripped the insulation from both wires, hold them together and using your thumb and forefinger twist the wires together. This should form a good connection that doesn’t come apart when pulled upon. You can cover this with electrical tape.

How To Connect Two Wires Together Using A Wire Nut

Once you have the electrical tape on, you can add a wire nut to the end for extra protection and insulation. This is an often-overlooked step that can cause problems in the future.

If you have questions about how to connect two wires together using a wire nut or you would like to have a professional electrician do your repairs, please call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric. We specialize in small appliance repair and offer 24/7 emergency electrical repair services.

Common Electric Wiring Mistakes

common electric wiring mistakesTo avoid common electric wiring mistakes, you need to have some knowledge about electrical current and electric wiring. There are many areas in your home where you can do repairs yourself but your electric wiring isn’t one of them. To make sure you avoid these common wiring mistakes, make sure you hire a professional electrician for all your residential or commercial electrical needs. Here are some common electric wiring mistakes we see:

Reversing Wires

It is easy to get the wires mixed up in your outlet. Unfortunately your lamps and other appliances will still working even though the wiring is wrong. The result could be fatal and you usually don’t notice a problem until someone gets hurt.  Every wire has a purpose and needs to be correctly used.  If you don’t know which wire does what, you shouldn’t be messing with your electric system.

Not Using The Proper Insulation and Electrical Boxes Correctly

There are right ways to do things and wrong ways. When it comes to electricity, it’s important that you don’t skip steps or skimp on materials. Wire connections should be insulated. All electrical wires should be connected inside a junction box. This prevents short circuits and sparks that could start a fire. Your professional electrician will do all the work according to NEC (National Electrical code) standards to make sure you and your family is safe. They will have all the necessary junction boxes and insulators to make sure your electrical system is safe and not over loaded.

Loose Connections

Your wiring should be done correctly to avoid common electrical wiring mistakes. When the connections are loose or put together poorly so that they become loose, a potential disaster could occur. Wires can arc and overheat causing a fire.

Common Electric Wiring Mistakes

It is important to know what you’re doing when you work with electricity. Hiring a trained electrician to do your repairs and electrical installations will prevent common electrical mistakes that could cause damage or hurt you or someone in your home. The money you save hiring a handyman to do the work isn’t worth the price you’ll pay if they don’t know what they’re doing. For complete residential and commercial electric service repair in Northern Kentucky, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric.

5 Signs You Need To Call A Licensed Electrician

home electricityHome electricity is probably one part of your house you rely on daily but pay little attention to. Electricity is everywhere and a large part of our existence revolves around items that use electricity. Most people don’t think about calling a professional electrician unless something is broken and they can’t fix it. Electricity however, can be dangerous and calling a professional is as much about your family’s safety as it is about fixing a problem. Here are a few reasons to call a licensed electrician.

Not Enough Outlets

You may be using too many extension cords or have power strips at every outlet. Using extension cords isn’t always safe. This is a good indication; you could use a few more outlets. It also may mean you are overloading some of the circuits in your home. A professional electrician can determine if your house needs an electrical upgrade or just a few more outlets.

Your Lights Dim

If you notice diming lights when you turn on certain appliances or too many appliances, you may have an overloaded circuit breaker. It may trip often too. An electrician can help alleviate the problem and balance the load.

No 3-prong Outlets

Most electrical items today require a 3-prong outlet. If your home electrical system only has 2-prong outlets, you could have a problem with your electricity being grounded. Using adaptors is not the safest solution, calling an electrician to change out the outlets is.

Do You Need A Licensed Electrician To Install New Appliances?

When it comes to installing new electrical appliances, it is always a good idea to provide dedicated circuits to your appliance. This can help balance the load before you start having problems. Electricity needs to work efficiently to save you money on your power bill and to ensure your appliances don’t wear out more frequently.

No GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) Outlets in Your Kitchen or Bath

Since the late 1980’s, homes are required to have GFI outlets near any water. This is a safety precaution to prevent electric shock. A GFI will detect any deviation in the current that might result from water coming into contact with electricity. Within 1/30th of a second, the electricity can be interrupted and this saves lives. If you notice you don’t have any outlets like this, an electrician can install them for you.

Your Home is Older

Homes that are older may not have an efficient electrical system. Recent changes to building codes, safety codes and new technology may mean your system isn’t running as well as it could be. Your electrician can make sure your system is up to date and working efficiently.

If you have recently purchased your home, you may find that although your home has passed inspection, you are having problems because the way your family uses electricity is unique to you. Your electrician can provide you with an electrical inspection or energy audit that revolves around how you are using your home electricity and what changes are needed for your safety and to cut your costs for electricity. If you have any questions or need service, call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric and they will be happy to help you.
