Attic Ventilation –

To Vent or Not to Vent?

Having enough of the proper ventilation for your attic can be very important. If your home doesn’t have enough ventilation, there is a possibility of moisture problems in the winter and a decrease in your home’s energy efficiency in the summer months. It’s just a myth that attic ventilation is more beneficial in warmer climates and in the summer months than in colder climates and in the winter. Actually, the colder the climate, the more your home may benefit from attic ventilation.

DIY or Hire a Professional Electrician

There is certainly no shortage of Do it Yourself websites and You Tube videos out there to show you how to add an electrical outlet or ventilation fan in your attic. But some things really probably should be left to professionals. Electricity is dangerous at best and down-right deadly at worst. A professional electrician will know how to do the job safely, be up to date on building codes, know when or if a building permit is needed as well as obtain the necessary permits. Additionally, if electrical wiring is not done properly it can cause even more problems, like shorting out the entire house, or worse, starting a fire.

Do Your Homework

Not every electrician is created equal.   In this digital age it’s easy to find trusted businesses to hire for your home repairs. Websites like Angie’s List and the Better Business Bureau will give you a good starting place to look for an electrician in good standing and with good reviews. Some electricians only care about making money, so they do a lot less for a lot more (of your money). Like a good mechanic, an experienced and trustworthy electrician is worth their weight in gold.

At Rose Brothers and Sons Electric we have an excellent record on Angie’s List and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. We have years of experience, a great reputation and loyal customers who call us time and again whenever they need electrical work done. Call today for an appointment.

Electric Noise or Humming: When to Call An Electrician

electric noiseThere are many different things in your home that can lead to electrical humming or buzzing noises. The appliances and devices in your home are responsible for most of these noises. But, some electrical noises or humming can be very dangerous. Some common areas that can cause electric noise or humming include:

  • Main Hums: The normal humming noises that are produced from appliances, electronics, or audio equipment are called main hums. This electric noise is caused by the vibration of the motors or fans in these devices and is not harmful.
  • Light Fixture Humming: When your light fixture is buzzing or humming, it is either a loose wire, or more likely, an issue with the light bulb. You should first try to replace the light bulb. Some light bulbs, such as fluorescent bulbs, have ballast that vibrates when it needs to be replaced. If the humming stops after you replace the bulb, you do not need to contact an electrician. However, if the humming continues, call an electrician for diagnosis and repair.
  • Dimmer Light Fixture Humming: If a dimmer light fixture is humming, it is almost always caused by the light bulb. Dimmer switches work by quickly cutting the light on and off so it appears that the light is dimmer. This quick on and off cycle causes the light bulbs to hum. Replacing the bulbs with a different type of bulb, such as a rough service bulb, can fix this electric noise. Look for light bulbs that indicate directly on the packaging that they can be used with dimmer switches.
  • Outlet or Switch Humming: There are a couple of things can cause humming or buzzing noise that is coming from your outlet or switch. First, it could be a loose wire. Next, there could be a problem with the outlet or switch. Finally, there could be improperly grounded wires or too much load on the wires. Any of these issues could be a potential fire hazard, so it is important to call an electrician for repair. Do not try to fix the wiring yourself!
  • Circuit Breaker Humming: Humming at your circuit breaker can be very dangerous. A few different issues, all of which require attention by an electrician, can cause the humming noise. First, the circuit could be overloaded, which prevents it from shutting off when required. Next, a wire could be damaged or loosely connected to the breaker or to the breaker panel. Finally, there could be a potential electrical arc forming. If your circuit breaker is humming or buzzing, shut off all circuits immediately and call an electrician.

Avoiding Common Wiring Mistakes in Northern Kentucky

common wiring mistakesCommon wiring mistakes can create a problem for homeowners who aren’t aware of the problem. Often do-it-yourself projects can create an electrical wiring nightmare that isn’t discovered until someone gets hurt or the house burns down. Many times unsuspecting homeowners have to confess to electrical project mistakes during a home inspection where they realize some of the jobs they undertook were better left to professional electricians in Northern Kentucky.  Understanding building codes and how to wire your home is what makes a professional electrician stand out.

Common Wiring Mistakes

Many times we find areas of the home where the wiring is put in backwards. Neutral wires in an outlet are connected to the wrong wires. Often this won’t cause any problem with the appliances you plug in but can potentially cause a life threatening shock if left undetected.

Another problem we often see is either not using wire nuts or connectors, or not putting the connections into a junction box. This can cause problems if there is a short. A wire nut or electrical box will protect your wiring and the surrounding area if there is an electrical short or arch.

Many times novice electricians will cut corners when it comes to all the specific wires and connectors that need to be properly placed to avoid fire or injury. Your professional electrician in Northern Kentucky knows what the rules are for safety and to pass building codes in the area. Using too small a junction box or putting too many wires inside the box is a good example of problems that can occur when you aren’t sure what you’re doing or you’re trying to fix your electrical wires without the right equipment.

If you don’t know much about electricity and don’t understand the correct way to run ground wires to your home, it is best to hire a residential electrical contractor to help with all your electrical needs. This will make sure you avoid common wiring mistakes that could end up costing you a ransom in costly repairs.

Why Do Sparks Come Out Of My Outlet?

why do sparks come out of my outlet? We often get calls from people wondering, “Why do sparks come out of my outlet?”.  This is a common question many homeowners face.  If you haven’t seen a spark coming from your outlet recently, you probably will soon enough.  Why? Because an arc at the outlet is a common occurrence.   Don’t get the idea that because it can happen often that it isn’t signally a problem though.  Here’s why:

Why Your Outlet Sparks

Current goes through your house very quickly.  Appliances and items you plug into your outlet draws the current out.  If you unplug your appliance while it is still on, you can cause a spark.  This can happen on appliances like your iron that don’t have an on/off switch but are turned on by turning the temperature knob up from zero.  You can avoid this kind of spark by making sure the appliance is turned off before unplugging or plugging it in.  When appliances are unplugged before turning them off, it causes the wires to get hot. This in turn can melt the insulation and cause a short circuit.

When Your Outlet Sparks Too Often

If you notice your outlet sparking often or sparking no matter what is plugged in, you should call your local electrician to examine the outlet. Don’t leave the question, “Why do sparks come out of my outlet?”, unanswered.  If your outlet is older or if the insulation has melted, you could have a short circuit.  This is a “hot” wire that could burn your house down.  A professional electrician can make sure your outlet is safe and fix a short circuit.  Like everything else in your home, your wiring can get old and worn out.  Fixing the wiring when you notice a problem will protect you, your family and your belongings.

Why Do Sparks Come Out of My Outlet?

There are a few possible answers when you ask why sparks come out of an outlet.  Any time you have a question about your electricity and especially when it involves a spark, you should call your electrician to have them check if something is wrong.  Don’t spend time worrying about a problem when the fix is a phone call away.  If you have trouble with a short circuit at your outlet or you notice sparks, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric.  We will be happy to help.
