Outdoor Electrical Safety Tips

outdoor electrical safety tipsThis is the time of year when outdoor electrical safety tips are important to consider. With Halloween just around the corner, millions of Americans will be hosting outdoor activities or participating in trick or treat. While decorating your house and using fancy lights, blow up figures and other electrical decorations is fun, you also need to ensure the safety of your friends and family. Rose Brothers and Sons can provide outdoor outlets and other electrical services. Here are a few outdoor electrical safety tips to keep you and your family safe:

Outdoor Outlets

It is important to keep outdoor outlets away from water. Outdoor outlets installed correctly will have protection from the weather. This includes outlet covers and a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). This will offer additional protection from electrical shock.

GFCIs are required for outlets within 20 feet of a water source. Outlets near the pool, hot tub or other water using appliances should have a GFCI.  This is one of the most important outdoor electrical safety tips you can’t ignore.

Outdoor Lighting and Decorations

Inspect your outdoor lighting and replace burned out or broken bulbs. Inspect power cords for fraying, loose plugs or other damage. Make sure if you are having guests walk through your yard that you allow enough lighting to prevent falls in the dark. If you are using an extension cord make sure it is in good working order. Extension cords should only be used for temporary needs. When using an extension cord make sure it is approved for outdoor use.   Keep cords and other items out of the way to avoid trips and falls. Never remove the third prong from a plug. Only use lighting and decorations that are manufactured for outside use.

Power Line Safety

When using a ladder to hang stringing lights or other decorations be careful and stay away from overhead power lines.   Always carry your ladder sideways instead of vertically to avoid contact with a power line.

Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)

Arcing of Home wiring is responsible for multiple home fires each year. Your home’s circuit breakers can’t respond quickly enough to arcing conditions to prevent household fire. An arc-fault circuit interrupter acts quickly and prevents fires.  According to the National Fire Protection Association, AFCIs will reduce electrical fires started by arcing and sparking.
