Insurance and Electrical Work

licensed and insured electriciansWhy should you hire licensed and insured electricians if you can do your own electrical work? Many people who are avid do-it-yourselfers often ask if they can do their own electrical work. There are many reasons why someone might want to do their own work and many reasons why it may not be the best idea. Here are a few considerations to think about.

 Experience and Knowledge

People who work on electrical systems, upgrades and simple wiring, need to be knowledgeable about what they are doing and how to do it. Even simple wiring can be done wrong and not up to code. There is a big controversy about what will happen if you have an insurance claim (say your house burns down) and there is unpermitted work done on the house. Many people feel the insurance will pay the claim as long as the work wasn’t the cause of the fire. Safety codes and licensed and insured electricians and contractors are available to insure your home can meet inspection and to protect you if there were a problem. You may think you can cut corners and save money but it may end up costing you more in the long run.

Getting Loans and Refinancing

When it comes time to resell your property or get refinanced, you may find that repairs or additions to your home will end up hurting you instead of helping you. When you refinance or sell your home an appraisal will turn up any unpermitted or uninspected work that has been done to your house. This can in some cases hurt your chances of getting refinanced. Some lending institutions don’t want to take the chance that there might be a problem with the work that will end up costing you money and possibly foreclosure. Licensed and insured electricians or contractors remove this type of liability.

Licensed and Insured Electricians

When you hire a professional electrician, you are hiring a licensed and insured company. If you are required to get building permits, they will do that. They will also be aware of the building codes in your area and they make money by doing their work in a way that will pass inspection the first time. Insurance will ensure you that their work is covered if there were a problem later down the road. If they were responsible, your homeowners insurance may not pay the claim, but their insurance would. They also have worker’s comp so that if a worker is hurt on the job, you are not responsible for the injury and medical claims.
