How to Tell If Your Electrical Meter Is Faulty

electrical meter

If your electrical bill is higher than normal and doesn’t seem quite right, a faulty electrical meter could be the culprit. Rose Brother’s & Sons of Northern Kentucky can help you determine if this is the real issue and guide you through getting the problem fixed.

Check Your Meter

If you have noticed unusual energy bills, one way to test to see if you have a faulty electrical meter is to check it every day. Note the reading on your meter for 7 days straight to see if your daily consumption is consistent. If this does not give you the results you wanted, turn off and unplug everything in your home and see if there is any type of output on the meter. If you are on a time-of-use tariff, you should be able to check the clock on your meter and look for electrical rate changes. Make sure the schedule is consistent and seems normal compared to the time of day you are checking. An energy monitor is another great way to discover if your meter is acting up. Monitors allow you to view your energy use in real time making it much easier to find a discrepancy.

Professional Testing

If you can’t find a problem by yourself, call a professional for a meter testing to make sure everything is as it should be. Contact your electricity company and talk to them about what you are concerned about. Electricity suppliers are required to test your faulty meter on-site and perform a basic check. If their findings are inconclusive or not as you expect, you can have the meter tested at a private facility of your choosing. A private test will cost you money out of pocket and will only be refunded if there is a conclusive report that your meter is faulty. Your electric company may charge you for the cost of installing and removing a temporary meter and you should ask how much this will cost before you have a private test performed. If your meter does not have a problem, this will not be refunded.

What to Do After

If your private testing facility discovers that there have been faulty readings, your electrical company will replace your meter and refund you the money you have lost. If you have been overcharged every month, your supplier is required to refund you the money during the period in which your meter was faulty. If your test determines that you are being undercharged, which is also likely, your supplier should not charge you for more than 12 months of charges.

Tips For Spring Energy Savings

tips for spring energy savingsTips for Spring Energy Savings go hand in hand with normal spring-cleaning. By taking a few extra minutes to think about energy efficiency and what small changes you can do to increase your energy savings, you’ll be ready for spring in no time. Here are a few home maintenance tips to get you started.

Ceiling Fans

Today I started my spring-cleaning with my ceiling fans. Not my favorite job I have to admit.   One of the first things I do each spring is make sure my fans are working properly. This includes changing the direction of the airflow so that warm air is drawn up. This helps cool the room and ensures constant air flow. Having dust free fans not only helps with air quality but also helps your fans work better and last longer.

HVAC Units

Make sure you have your HVAC unit serviced if you haven’t done so. Some things you can do yourself like changing filters. This does not replace the need for a routine maintenance to ensure your air conditioner is ready for the new season. Clean around the outdoor units as well to remove debris and leaves leftover from fall.

Windows and Doors

Now is a great time to make sure your windows and doors have no leaks. Keep the track around your sliding glass door clean to prevent leaks in the seal of the window. Consider purchasing new window treatments or drapes to help keep the cool air inside this spring and summer. This can save you a lot on your heating and cooling bill.

Exhaust Fans

With the warmer weather comes the need for more showers. Make sure you have a good working fan in your bathroom and use it the recommended amount of time. Adding a timer to the fan will ensure you and your guest leave it running for 15 min. after each shower. Attic ventilation is equally important if not more so. An attic ventilation system will draw cool air up through the house. This can replace running the air conditioner during mild weather and runs at a fraction of the cost. Attic ventilation can also lower your heating bill in the winter.

Refrigerators and Appliances

As part of your spring home maintenance, clean the coils around your refrigerator and remove pet hair and dust from appliances. Air should be able to circulate freely around condenser coils. This will help your electric appliances to work more efficiently and lower your electric bill while helping ensure your appliance lasts the full life expectancy. Refrigerators use over 10% of your household energy. That’s quite a lot when you think about it. Make sure your refrigerator is in good working condition and has a good seal to lock in the cold. Whenever you purchase a new appliance or air conditioner make sure it is energy efficient and has the energy star seal.  Look for frayed chords and small appliances that need repaired or replaced and go ahead and make the switch.

How To Save On Your Utilities This Winter

how to save on utilities this winterWe’d like to show you how to save on your Utilities this winter. If you haven’t already had an energy assessment, now may be a good time to call your electrician in Northern Kentucky to see how efficient your home is. You might be surprised to learn there are many ways to cut utility costs this fall. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Open all south facing window coverings to allow the sun to warm your house naturally in the daytime.
  • Cover drafty windows with tight fitting plastic. Select energy efficient window treatments the next time you replace your blinds or shades. Consider installing storm windows, which can save you 25% to 50% on heat loss through your windows.
  • Set your thermostat to the lowest setting you can tolerate during the day. Wear warm clothing to stay warm. At night lower the thermostat 10 to 15 degrees more for savings of up to 10%.
  • Seal Leaks around windows and doors using weather stripping or caulk. Find and seal leaks around pipes, gaps around the chimney and fireplace, gaps around recessed lights, and leaks in the unfinished spaces in cupboards and closets.

Fall Maintenance Prepares Your Home For Winter

Fall maintenance is a preventative way to prepare your home for winter and avoid winter time home repairs.  Your HVAC technician will make sure your heating system is clean and well lubricated: filters and vents that need changed or cleaned will be taken care of. Now is a good time to inspect the furnace, chimney, ducts and pipes for leaks, cracks or needed repairs. Insulate pipes, sweep the chimney, and cover your AC unit to get ready for colder weather.

Change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detector.  If you don’t have a quality smoke or carbon monoxide detector system, we can help with installation.

The Truth About Fireplaces

If you leave your chimney flue open all the time, you are losing heated air. It’s like having a window open in your home. Close the chimney flue after you’ve had a fire. Traditional fireplaces are not too effective when it comes to heating your house. Unless you have a newer fireplace insert you could be taking warm air from your room and simply sending it up the chimney. A better option to keep some of the heat in is to open a window near by about 1 inch. Close the doors to the room and turn your heat thermostat down to 50 or 55 degrees. This allows more of the heat to come into the room. Traditional fireplaces have been banned from new construction in some places because of the air pollution they cause.  You can save on your utilities by using your fireplace properly, adding a new insert or closing the flue between uses.  For more information visit the Energy.gov website about fireplaces and fireplace inserts.

A Simple Step To Save Electricity

One of the easiest ways you can save on electricity is by turning appliances off when you’re not using them. It is estimated over 3.5 billion dollars are wasted because most people leave computers and other appliances plugged in when they’re not in use. Using a power strip is the easiest way to save electricity from being used this way. Simply turn the power strip off when you’re not using the computer or appliance. This one simple step can save on your electric bill.

Replace Older Appliances

It is no coincidence that older houses and appliances use more energy. If you are wondering how to save on your Utilities this winter, consider upgrading your electricity or replacing older appliances with newer more energy efficient products. You’ll see savings right away.
