What Should I Do When The Power Goes Out?

power goes out

There are a multitude of reasons as to why you might lose power in your home; Weather conditions, service accidents, and storms of varying levels of severity just to name a few. Because you can never be sure if your power outage is going to be for an extended period of time or for just a few minutes, it is important to be fully prepared for both scenarios. Keep your home and family safe with these power outage tips from Rose Brothers & Sons Electric where our electricians proudly serve Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati, and the surrounding areas.

When The Power Goes Out Short Term

Stay calm. Check outside your windows and see if you can tell if your neighbors have also lost power. If you discover that you are the only house on the block that is missing power, the problem is probably based within your home. Check circuit breakers, replace blown fuses, and check all of your outlets if you still don’t discover the problem and then call an electrician.

If you noticed that your neighbors have also lost power, call your electric company. While electrical suppliers usually know when areas on their grid lose power, it is always helpful for your own peace of mind to call and find an estimated time for repairs. While you are waiting for the repair, unplug all of your appliances with electrical components, like television sets, computers, and microwaves. By unplugging these items, you can avoid damage from the power surge once the power has been repaired.

Long Term Power Outage

The best thing you can do for long term power outages is to be prepared beforehand. Keep spare batteries, flashlights, candles, matches, and a basic first aid kit in a spot that you can locate easily. Consider buying a flashlight that stays plugged into an outlet at all times and is then ready and charged when your power goes out. If you have a generator, make sure you have the supplies you need like gas and that everything has been installed properly. Don’t wait for an emergency to check these things!

Just like with a short term power outage, check to see if you are the only house that has lost power and then check your breakers and fuses. If you are the only home that has lost power and you are unable to restore it, it is time to call an electrician. If your electrician comes and explains to you that the problem may take a while to resolve, unplug all of your belongings to avoid damage from power surges once power has been restored. In addition to this, turn off all of your breakers except for one, so you know when power is restored. Empty all your food from your refrigerators and freezers and leave the doors wide open. If someone you know has electricity, see if you can store food there. Utilize your windows to control the temperature of your home, open south facing curtains and blinds in the winter to let sun and heat into your home and always keep your blinds closed at night.

The Difference Between a Short Circuit or Ground Fault?

short circuit or ground faultWhat’s the difference between a short circuit or ground fault and do I need to know? You may have heard the terms short circuit or ground fault used and wonder what they mean to you and your electrical system. If you have a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker, you may have a faulty breaker, a short circuit or  ground fault or a problem with one of your appliances.

Why Does My Circuit Breaker Trip?

If you have a fuse box or circuit breaker box, it is put in place to protect you and your home from too much electricity. Circuit breakers or fuses are designed to work with a certain amount of electricity or AMPS. When that amount is exceeded because too much electricity is required, the fuse will blow or the breaker will trip to off. For example when you have a 20-amp fuse and your appliance starts using 30-amps you will exceed the amount of electricity and your circuit breaker will trip or your fuse will burn out.

Short Circuit or Ground Fault

What Is A Short Circuit?

A Short circuit is when a wire gets exposed or is open to touch another wire. When the wires are connected wrong or insulation wears away so that wires touch, you can end up with a hot wire touching a neutral wire and this can result in a short circuit. Often you’ll see a spark or smell smoke. Sometimes you cannot detect where the problem is. Your electrician can help determine the cause of the short circuit and rewire any areas that have trouble. A short circuit will draw more electricity and cause a short. Sometimes the hot wires melt the insulation on the wires and could potentially cause a house fire.

What Is A Ground Fault?

A ground fault occurs when the hot wire is exposed and touches either the ground wire or it touches metal in the junction box or in the appliance. For example if your air conditioner compressor has a ground fault it means a wire in the compressor broke and is touching the sides of the unit. This will also cause a surge in power that will trip the breaker or blow the fuse.  Another term for ground fault is a short to ground connection.

What Should You Do If Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

If you notice a problem with your circuit breaker, you need to have it checked out. The circuit breaker is there to keep you safe and notify you if there’s a problem. Sometimes the only problem is a loose wire at the circuit breaker box. Other times, you have either a short circuit or ground fault causing the breaker to trip or the fuse to blow. Your electrician at Rose Brothers & Sons Electric can help you determine where the problem is and make the necessary repairs. Rose Brothers serves the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area and we are ready to help you with all your electrical repairs.

How To Save On Your Utilities This Winter

how to save on utilities this winterWe’d like to show you how to save on your Utilities this winter. If you haven’t already had an energy assessment, now may be a good time to call your electrician in Northern Kentucky to see how efficient your home is. You might be surprised to learn there are many ways to cut utility costs this fall. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Open all south facing window coverings to allow the sun to warm your house naturally in the daytime.
  • Cover drafty windows with tight fitting plastic. Select energy efficient window treatments the next time you replace your blinds or shades. Consider installing storm windows, which can save you 25% to 50% on heat loss through your windows.
  • Set your thermostat to the lowest setting you can tolerate during the day. Wear warm clothing to stay warm. At night lower the thermostat 10 to 15 degrees more for savings of up to 10%.
  • Seal Leaks around windows and doors using weather stripping or caulk. Find and seal leaks around pipes, gaps around the chimney and fireplace, gaps around recessed lights, and leaks in the unfinished spaces in cupboards and closets.

Fall Maintenance Prepares Your Home For Winter

Fall maintenance is a preventative way to prepare your home for winter and avoid winter time home repairs.  Your HVAC technician will make sure your heating system is clean and well lubricated: filters and vents that need changed or cleaned will be taken care of. Now is a good time to inspect the furnace, chimney, ducts and pipes for leaks, cracks or needed repairs. Insulate pipes, sweep the chimney, and cover your AC unit to get ready for colder weather.

Change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detector.  If you don’t have a quality smoke or carbon monoxide detector system, we can help with installation.

The Truth About Fireplaces

If you leave your chimney flue open all the time, you are losing heated air. It’s like having a window open in your home. Close the chimney flue after you’ve had a fire. Traditional fireplaces are not too effective when it comes to heating your house. Unless you have a newer fireplace insert you could be taking warm air from your room and simply sending it up the chimney. A better option to keep some of the heat in is to open a window near by about 1 inch. Close the doors to the room and turn your heat thermostat down to 50 or 55 degrees. This allows more of the heat to come into the room. Traditional fireplaces have been banned from new construction in some places because of the air pollution they cause.  You can save on your utilities by using your fireplace properly, adding a new insert or closing the flue between uses.  For more information visit the Energy.gov website about fireplaces and fireplace inserts.

A Simple Step To Save Electricity

One of the easiest ways you can save on electricity is by turning appliances off when you’re not using them. It is estimated over 3.5 billion dollars are wasted because most people leave computers and other appliances plugged in when they’re not in use. Using a power strip is the easiest way to save electricity from being used this way. Simply turn the power strip off when you’re not using the computer or appliance. This one simple step can save on your electric bill.

Replace Older Appliances

It is no coincidence that older houses and appliances use more energy. If you are wondering how to save on your Utilities this winter, consider upgrading your electricity or replacing older appliances with newer more energy efficient products. You’ll see savings right away.

How To Replace A Ceiling Light Fixture

how to replace a ceiling light How to replace a ceiling light fixture may seem complicated at first. As with all electrical projects, you should not attempt them yourself unless you feel completely comfortable working with electricity and you understand the safest ways to connect electrical wires. If you don’t follow safety guidelines and use wire nuts for this project, you could put you and your family at risk for electrical fires. If you need help with replacing a light fixture, Rose Brothers & Son Electric will be happy to help.

How To Replace A Ceiling Light Fixture

Before you begin, stop and make sure all power to the light fixture is turned off at the circuit breaker. It is more than possible that other wires besides the 3 that you’ll be working with are close by. You can use a circuit tester to check for hot wires or just turn the power off to the entire house. Now your ready to begin the steps- how to replace a ceiling light fixture:

  1. Remove any light bulbs or light bulb covers that could break during the transition.
  2. Unscrew the bolts that hold the fixture base to the mounting strap or outlet box.
  3. Lower the fixture base and you should see 3 wires. The black wire is hot, the white wire neutral and the green wire is the ground. This is the basic wiring that is used, your house may use a different color for the hot wire or have no ground wire.
  4. Disconnect the wires from the old fixture base by removing wire nuts or electrical tape
  5. Connect the wires from the new fixture. Match up the wires with their corresponding wires in the outlet box. Use a wire nut.
  6. Raise and position the new light fixture. Screw the fixture base into the mounting strip or outlet box.
  7. Add light bulbs and any bulb covers
  8. Turn the power back on.

The Easiest Way to Install A Light Fixture

For most people, working with electricity and changing a light fixture in the ceiling is more hands on then they feel comfortable with. Your Northern Kentucky electrician can install a ceiling fixture.   It is easy, safe and inexpensive. If you need help replacing a light fixture, call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric.

Common Electric Wiring Mistakes

common electric wiring mistakesTo avoid common electric wiring mistakes, you need to have some knowledge about electrical current and electric wiring. There are many areas in your home where you can do repairs yourself but your electric wiring isn’t one of them. To make sure you avoid these common wiring mistakes, make sure you hire a professional electrician for all your residential or commercial electrical needs. Here are some common electric wiring mistakes we see:

Reversing Wires

It is easy to get the wires mixed up in your outlet. Unfortunately your lamps and other appliances will still working even though the wiring is wrong. The result could be fatal and you usually don’t notice a problem until someone gets hurt.  Every wire has a purpose and needs to be correctly used.  If you don’t know which wire does what, you shouldn’t be messing with your electric system.

Not Using The Proper Insulation and Electrical Boxes Correctly

There are right ways to do things and wrong ways. When it comes to electricity, it’s important that you don’t skip steps or skimp on materials. Wire connections should be insulated. All electrical wires should be connected inside a junction box. This prevents short circuits and sparks that could start a fire. Your professional electrician will do all the work according to NEC (National Electrical code) standards to make sure you and your family is safe. They will have all the necessary junction boxes and insulators to make sure your electrical system is safe and not over loaded.

Loose Connections

Your wiring should be done correctly to avoid common electrical wiring mistakes. When the connections are loose or put together poorly so that they become loose, a potential disaster could occur. Wires can arc and overheat causing a fire.

Common Electric Wiring Mistakes

It is important to know what you’re doing when you work with electricity. Hiring a trained electrician to do your repairs and electrical installations will prevent common electrical mistakes that could cause damage or hurt you or someone in your home. The money you save hiring a handyman to do the work isn’t worth the price you’ll pay if they don’t know what they’re doing. For complete residential and commercial electric service repair in Northern Kentucky, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric.

Summer Safety Tips from an Electrician in Covington KY

electrician in Covington KYHere are a few summer tips from your electrician in Covington KY.  This is the time of year when it is important to go over a few electrical tips with your family.  Keeping your family safe from electrical hazards can prevent a tragedy that is all too common this time of year.  Not only are people spending more time working and playing outdoors but with the summer storms, lightning and downed powered lines can also be a threat.  These are the precautions that could save your life.

Lightning

This time of year electrical storms and lightening is a threat.  If you are outside during a storm, stay out of the pool and other bodies of water.  Make sure you seek shelter as soon as you can.  Don’t seek shelter under a tree or other object that may get struck by lightning.  If you have to remain outside, a ditch or car is a better place to seek shelter.

Downed Power Lines

Avoid downed powered lines.  Electricity can travel more than people realize.  Even a trained electrician will avoid an area with a downed power line.  Never attempt to cross a downed line in your car.  Never try to release someone who is trapped by a downed power line.  It is best to call the power company or trained personnel to rescue someone.  If you are in your car and can drive away from a downed power line that is best.  If you are stuck under a downed power line then you should stay in your car until help arrives.  If you can’t, jump as far away from the car as possible and try to land on both feet.  There is no guarantee you won’t feel the shock.  Because electricity can travel in ways we don’t always see, you can get electrocuted across the street form a downed power line just by stepping in a small puddle.  Electricity is dangerous when it is out of control, so be careful.

Electrical Cords and Equipment in Water

Be sure and keep all electrical cords and electrical equipment away from water.  This includes using electrical lawn equipment in wet grass.  Don’t leave tools plugged in outside or near water.  Be careful of plug in radios and other electrical entertainment near water, lakes and pools.

Overhead Power Lines

Power lines overhead can electrocute you if you’re not careful.  You should stay at least 15 ft away from a power line if possible.  Never fly a kite or airplane near a power line.  If you get a kite stuck in a power line, you should call your local electrical company.  Avoid using metallic parts on your kites.

If you are doing yard work or need to go on the roof, be aware of where the power lines are.  Make sure you keep trees trimmed from the power lines.

Underground Power Lines

Before you dig, call your local electric company and have them locate your power lines.  This is usually free and can save you from accidents, repairs and loss of service.  Underground wires can be just as deadly as overhead lines.

Self-sufficient Homes and Electricity

self-sufficient homesSelf-sufficient energy and electricity has been an interesting topic for years.  Back in the 1970’s people began to focus on energy consumption and conservation.  Many studies show that American is one of the leading users of our natural resources, but did you know that America this year was 84.5% self-sufficient energy-wise?

America’s  Goal, 100% Self-sufficient Energy

It has always been our dream as a country to be self-sufficient as far as energy was concerned.  Thanks to new technologies such as, drilling and extraction methods (hydraulic fraction and horizontal drilling) we are now more than ever close to reaching our goals.    It is estimated that by the year 2020 we will, in fact, be energy efficient.

Conserving energy with Self-sufficient buildings

Besides creating our own energy, a move toward conservation and self-sufficiency is emerging across the US.  Some people are worrying about the collapse of the grid and being self-sustaining because of electrical failure.  Other people are conserving natural resources and saving money by living off the land.

The International Energy Agency recognizes that buildings are one of the most cost-effective sectors for reducing energy use.  40% of our primary energy consumption is in our buildings and homes.  This is also where a significant source of CO2 emissions is created.  With the use of better forms of energy such as photovoltaic energy, wind turbines, geo-thermal systems and hydro turbines some are able to produce enough electricity to provide for their own needs and, also feed energy back into the grid.

How You Can Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Self-sufficient homes or autonomous homes are built with green living in mind.  By studying these homes and how they save electricity, we can learn some things we can do ourselves that will help with our energy consumption.

Unless you are starting from scratch or have lots of money to invest in solar energy or geothermal energy, you probably will find yourself doing a few things with what you have.  One of the big assets or disadvantage a house can have are it’s windows.  Self-sufficient houses are insulated well and the windows and doors are completely sealed.  You can consider replacing windows that leak.  Also you can use the location of your windows to your advantage.  They can provide sunlight for lights and sun for heat in the winter.  In the summer you can use awnings to try and reverse the effect.  Window treatments can also help with energy efficiency at your windows.

Led lights offer another way to use less energy.  They also put off heat which can help during the winter.  Led light systems can be purchased too that are powered by solar, hydro or wind.

Water is another area where we can easily conserve.  Many people today are using rain barrels to water their lawns or gardens.  You can easily use solar water heaters for your roof to heat your water without using as much electricity.  Some of these systems can be quite expensive.

Other people in an attempt to use less electricity will hang their clothes out to dry on the line.  At one time this was considered normal and everyone hung their clothes outside, then it was only people who had no dryer and it was considered for the poor. Today, we see the tide reversing as people are beginning to once again use their clothes line out of choice to conserve and be more self-sufficient.

Some of the ways to conserve electricity are just common sense.  Upgrading your windows or appliances are all good ideas.  Other ideas are more a choice and a way of life.  You can expect as we keep exploring new energy sources and ways to use that energy that people will become more energy efficient and homes and building will be built with energy and electricity offered in more self-sufficient ways.

To see how you can better use your electricity, call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric today.

Preparing for BBQ Season With Outdoor Electricity

electricityAdd some electricity to your party!  There are many ways to enhance your deck or patio that will make grilling fun and exciting this summer.  Spring is in the air and it’s time to think about grilling, entertaining and enjoying your home the way you’ve always wanted to.

Outdoor Outlets Provide More Electricity

Adding a few outdoor electrical outlets to your patio or deck is a good way to ensure you can have access to the electricity you want, where you want it.  Do away with extension cords running everywhere.  They are a fire hazard outside and you don’t want your friends or kids tripping on them.

Having more outdoor outlets will allow you to put in fountains and ponds in areas where you couldn’t before.  Adding the sound of running water to your backyard will create a soothing atmosphere that will make you want to linger longer.

Having extra electrical outlets in addition to hardwired electricity gives you the option to change things up and move things around.  You will be able to plug in music, fans or heaters, as you desire.

Outdoor Lighting

Nothing creates ambiance like the right lighting.  If you are planning a barbeque or outdoor party at night, you need outdoor lighting.  Whether you use the lighting for sight or enjoy the look of outdoor lights in your yard, lights can make a huge difference in how you and your guests feel.

Decorative lighting in your yard is beautiful.  Today solar lights are used everywhere.  They are often inexpensive but require batteries or upkeep.  Hardwired lighting is more costly on your fuel bill but can save you money in maintenance.

Festive lighting is very popular for outdoor decks and patios.  A string of white lights or decorative lights add a whimsical touch to any home.  Soft lights at night create a fun atmosphere that screams romance.

Lighting is also an important aspect to your deck.  Having lights around the walkways or steps is a great way to prevent accidents and light up the way.

Outdoor Music

Nothing is as entrancing as outdoor music.  No matter what your musical preference having the music propelled into the yard is the best way to hear it.  Strategically placed speakers can create that enjoyable atmosphere you are wanting.  Lighten up your parties with just the right sound.

With outdoor electricity and wiring, you can enjoy your music from every location instead of just the boom box.   This allows you to either play soft music so everyone can hear it or blast the music throughout your yard so the neighborhood can hear it.

Spring and summer are just around the corner.  It’s time to capture the spirit and plan for your summer parties and barbeques by adding electricity to the mix.  Rose Brothers and Sons Electric can help with all your electrical needs and lighten up your backyard with spectacular nighttime views.  Call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric today and let’s get the party started!

Environmentally Friendly Electricity

electricityEnvironmentally friendly electricity or green electricity is a hot topic in most places these days.  With the high cost of fuel and the worry of our planet’s depleting resources, it is no wonder people everywhere want to go green.   When fuels are burned, carbon dioxide the main gas responsible for climate change is released making power plants environmentally dangerous.  The United States has a higher consumption of fuel than any other country with China being the lowest.  To make matters worse, the United States buys most of it’s fuel and so we have the problem of relying on other countries to produce the large amount we consume.  So we see having environmentally friendly electricity is a two-fold problem.

Where Does Electricity Come From

Power plants create electricity by burning fuels such as gas and coal.   These fossil fuels for the most part come from other countries and will eventually be exhausted.  Finding replacement fuel or energy is what environmentally friendly electricity is all about.

There are many types of renewable energy.  This is energy that won’t be exhausted because Mother Nature replenishes it regularly.  An example of this type of power would be wind power and solar energy.  A large focus is seen, in companies searching for an alternative to gas and Coal.  Wind turbines have developed over the years making them quieter and more dependable.

Besides wind power we also have solar power.  Solar power works by turning sunlight into electricity.  With today’s technology, solar power can work even on cloudy days.  One down fall to solar energy is the cost.    Some homeowners are able to take advantage of solar energy.  Another way they do this is by using the sun’s energy to heat water on the roof before it is either further heated or stored.  14% of your electricity goes to heating water.

Today houses and buildings are being designed with the environment in mind to make maximum use of the sun.  Today much of the energy we currently use heating, lighting and air conditioning our homes can be saved.

If you live near Perry County, you may have heard about bio-mass and the use of burning wood to provide electricity to homes in the area.  This technique burns plant and plant based material and creates energy.  It is thought that the carbon dioxide the plant uses during its life will offset the carbon dioxide released during burning.

Other types of energy that creates electricity are nuclear energy, with it’s own concerns, geothermal energy, hydropower, wave or tidal power, landfill gas and waste incineration.  All these types of power have their drawbacks and so the search for an answer goes on.

What Can Homeowners Do To Save Electricity

There are many things we can do to save electricity.  Turning off lights and lowering or raising our thermostats is all good options.  We can purchase energy efficient appliances.  In 1992 the Energy Star Program started to allow customers to see which appliances were more energy efficient.  On average an appliance with the star will save 30% more in electricity.  Washing machines alone are 60% more energy efficient than they were 20 years ago.  They can save you up to $85 per year.  Not only do they save on electricity but they can use up to 8 fewer gallons per load.

Older appliances and electrical systems are not as energy efficient as they are today.  This is one of the benefits of getting new appliances or having new electricity installed.  Many times you can get rebates for going green and having environmentally friendly electricity or appliances.

If you have any questions please call Rose Brothers & Sons Electricity at (859)746-9440 we will be happy to help you with all your electricity needs.
