kitchen lighting trendsIf you want a new spark of style for your kitchen, consider updating your lighting fixtures for an easy jump into the 2017 lighting trends. Rose Brothers & Sons Inc., trusted electrical contractor and your best choice for electric repairs in Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati, and the surrounding areas wants to help you stay on top of this years’ kitchen lighting trends.

2016 Kitchen Lighting Trends

When it comes to your kitchen, your lighting choices are important for the overall feel and look of your space. The right lighting can completely transform a room and in the kitchen, a room that is used during all times of the day, the right lighting fixtures are even more important. Many trends like pendant lighting, natural materials, blown glass, LED, warm metal, and glitz vintage have stuck around for the upcoming year and could all be great additions to your kitchen décor.

Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting allows for even more light in your kitchen. Mount these interesting light fixtures above your island however you like. Vary their heights and the sizes of the actual pendant to liven up the look. Pendant lighting will give you concentrated lighting over one area, so it is best to incorporate these lights with over lighting in your kitchen.

Natural Materials

Natural materials are a big trend in every area of the home this year. Consider wood, bamboo, linen, or burlap light fixtures to bring a touch of natural beauty into your space. Not only will this natural element be on trend, it will make your kitchen feel warmer if your kitchen preferences tend to be more modern. These natural elements will make guests feel more welcome and make for a beautiful design contrast that is not too overwhelming.

LED Kitchen Lights

LED lights are kitchen lighting trends that are going to be around for a long time. Not only do these lights offer unique lighting possibilities for your entire home, like dimming possibilities and light color choices, but they are incredibly energy efficient. So while these lights will make your kitchen sparkle, you will also be saving money and reducing your home’s carbon footprint.

Stay up to date with the latest trends in home goods and finally be able to be one step ahead of the Jones’. At Rose Brothers & Sons, we want you to stay in the lighting trend loop. We’re going to give you all of the latest lighting trends for your new home.

2016 Lighting Trends

Getting Back to Brass and Vintage Glass

You know you have that favorite shirt sitting in the back of your closet that you can never bring yourself to get rid of. As you know, everything eventually comes back into style. Well, most everything. According to Progress Lighting, vintage and rustic fixtures from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s are making a comeback. Vintage glass and brass accents made a bold statement during that era and they’re still trendy today.

Pendant Lighting

This lighting trend makes a statement that combines tradition and nuance. You can personalize pendant lighting to make it unique to your own home. Mix and match different styles of these light fixtures to make it your own. According to New Home Source, you can combine a couple of pendant light fixtures at various heights to make a fun and unique chandelier of your own.

Oversized Fixtures

Make a dramatic and bold statement in your new home by adding an oversized light fixture to your home. Oversized fixtures are a bold focal point for homes with large foyers or high ceilings. These trendy fixtures give your home some modern flair rather than opting for the classic and traditional glass chandelier.

Nautical Twists

According to Progress Lighting, navy is the top color trend for 2016. Compliment this beautiful color with a lighting fixture that adds a nautical twist to your home. Beveled or seeded glass light fixtures create that nautical feel in your home that you’re looking for. These nautical elements will make you feel like the shore is right outside your window.

We hope that these 2016 lighting trends will help you add some modern flair to your new home. At Rose Brothers & Sons we want to be your first call when installing your new light fixtures. We are electricians and electrical contractors serving Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati and the surrounding areas.

Winterize Your Home In 10 Easy Steps

winterize your homeIf you have lived in Northern Kentucky for very long, you are aware that our winters can bring extremes in temperatures. Protect your family, home, appliances and budget by preparing your home for winter.  Here are a few tips to winterize your home.

  1. If you have an electric water heater, insulate it (If you have a gas-powered water heater insulation creates a fire hazard.) Insulate pipes leading to your water heater. This will cut down on the workload for your water heater.
  2. Seal any air leaks around your windows and doors. Put this on your fall schedule and you won’t be sorry. Caulking the leaks will save money on your heating and cooling bill.  If you can see light around your doors, your heat is escaping causing your heater or furnace to work longer and harder. Another way to check for leaks is to hold a lighted candle near your window on a windy day. If the candle flame bends, your window is leaking.
  3. Check the glazing on your windows for gaps or cracks. Glazing needs to be replaced periodically. If you tap on a window pane and it rattles your glazing may need replacement.
  4. Reduce the temperature on your thermostat when no one is at home and at night when all are sleeping.    Replacing your old manual thermostat with a programmable thermostat will automate this chore. Consider putting a timer on your water heater so that it isn’t heating water when it won’t be needed. Better yet, switch to a tankless water heating system. While this will only be done once when you winterize your home, you will be glad you took the time to make recommended replacements.
  5. Clean your gutters of debris. Check for any branches that might have grown and are hanging over electrical wires and have them removed.
  6. Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans. Hot air rises so you want your fan blowing up so that the warmer air circulates around the room.
  7. According t the Department of Energy, door drafts can waste anywhere from 5-30% of your heat. Try making a draft snake to place at the foot of your door.
  8. Shut off the water supply to your irrigation system and outdoor spigots. Hire a contractor to blow out any water remaining in your irrigation system.
  9. If you have a chimney, make sure it is ready for use. Chimneys should be cleaned at least once per year.
  10. Make sure that your carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Replace old batteries if necessary.

Finding An Electrical Contractor For Insurance Claims

finding an electrical contractor for insurance claimsYou’ll find that finding an electrical contractor for insurance claims is as easy as calling Rose Brothers & Sons Electric in Northern Kentucky.  We have experiencing working with insurance claims and helping customers who are filing a claim get the electrical repairs they need.  There are a few things you need to be aware of:

Know Your Home Owners Policy and What It Covers

When it comes to homeowners policies, they are all pretty much the same.  The percentages may be different and some things may be covered on one policy that are not covered on another.  Flood Insurance is a separate insurance that is bought separately.  If you have a typical home owner’s policy, floods are not covered.  Water damage by other means are.  Here are some of the things your policy covers that you may not be aware of:

  • repairs to bring your home up to code after damage
  • Burst water pipes
  • Damage from falling objects, including downed trees
  • lightening damage
  • power surges
  • refrigerated items lost from power outages
  • wiring damage
  • damage from the weight of snow

Again, what your particular policy covers may vary to some degree.  Read your policy and talk to your agent if you have questions.

Finding An Electrical Contractor For Insurance Claims

Not all electrical contractors are the same.  Some companies are inexperienced when it comes to doing repairs and some will only handle large repairs.  Rose Brothers & Sons Electric has been servicing insurance claim electrical repairs in Northern Kentucky  for decades.  We have a team of highly skilled electricians who are dedicated to making sure you get the best service available.  We have a reputation with the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List because we are dependable.  We’ll get your electrical repairs done right and completed on time.

Avoid electricians or handyman outfits that come knocking on your door after a heavy storm or when damage is evident at your home.  Make sure you hire a reputable company who has the proper insurance and license to do the job.  As you can imagine, electrical repairs must be done correctly to be safe.  You also don’t want someone doing repairs that know nothing about the current building codes.  This might save you a little money now but in the long run when you go to sell your home, you will pay when the work doesn’t pass inspection.  Finding an electrical contractor for insurance claims is just like finding any responsible contractor.  Don’t settle for the cheapest quote or a quote from an inexperienced company.  If you need electrical repairs in Northern Kentucky, call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric.  We would love to speak with you and offer you an estimate.

Keeping Squirrels and Raccoons Out Of Your Attic

keeping squirrels and raccoons out of your atticKeeping Squirrels and Raccoons out of your attic can become a big job. These rodents love to take up residence in your attic and any other part of your home if you’ll allow it. One family we know had a pest squirrel that thought he owned the house and often came out of the attic and into the kitchen whenever he got a chance. Although many people think squirrels and raccoons are cute, when they’re causing trouble in your attic, you begin to look at them a little differently. They can chew electrical wires, causing damage and electrical repairs and they can also cause fire hazards. Keeping Squirrels and raccoons out of your attic is important because they carry disease, lice, ticks and fleas too. We hope these tips will help.

Tips For Getting Rid of Squirrels And Raccoons In The Attic

  1. If you hear the noise of squirrels or other rodents in the attic, you can take a look and see if you notice the signs of nesting or chewed electrical wires. Rodents often get into insulation and other items in the attic looking for a place to nest. You can look for holes too and other entry openings. The best way to eliminate the rodents is to block their holes. If you put a flap on the outside of the opening, you can try to make sure they get out but not back in. They will leave looking for food and not be able to reenter. Make sure you look for nests so if babies are in the attic they don’t die and cause an odor.
  2. Call a professional exterminator or trapper. If you have a serious problem with squirrels or raccoons, you can call for professional pest control. This is often the easiest way of getting rid of the pests. Once animals are relocated and the holes blocked, you usually can avoid the problem in the future.
  3. Squirrels and Raccoons are expert climbers.  You can avoid some of the ease of entering your attic by removing trees and branches that overhang your roof.  Don’t be fooled though, a busy rodent can find a way in if they are determined.

Keeping Squirrels And Raccoons Out Of Your Attic

Once you have had a problem with rodents in your attic, you can see why it is so important to keep them away. Damage to your wood and insulation, and damage to your electrical wiring can be costly. They can also damage ductwork, ceilings and more. Once you take care of the problem, you can begin doing the necessary repairs to fix whatever damage they have done.
