Losing Power To Your Refrigerator

losing power to your refrigeratorLosing power to your refrigerator can result in ruining food. This can get costly, especially if you have a lot of things in your freezer.  If you have lost power to your refrigerator, there are a few things you can check.

GFCI Receptacles

Many of the outlets in your kitchen are required to be GFCI receptacles.  These outlet prevent shock and are great in areas where water may cause a problem.  They shouldn’t be used for refrigerators though.  The GFCI receptacle often trips and is very sensitive.  It will turn off if it detects a slight possible problem.  That is what it’s designed to do.  This is a real problem if you have your refrigerator plugged into a receptacle of this type.  You could spoil all of your food if your refrigerator went off and you didn’t notice it.  If your losing power to your refrigerator and you have it plugged into a GFCI outlet, push the button to reset the outlet.  Have your electrician replace the outlet with a regular receptacle as soon as possible.

Circuit Breaker Blowing

If you have a circuit breaker that is blowing, you may have too many things attached to the breaker.  You may also have faulty wires or a faulty circuit breaker.  You also may have a problem with your refrigerator.  Your professional electrician will be able to tell you if the problem is in your wiring or if it is in the refrigerator itself.

Losing Power to Your Refrigerator

If you cannot restore the power to your refrigerator, you can use an extension cord to plug your refrigerator into until your electrician arrives.  If you are unable to find power, you can use your cooler to keep things cold.  Call your electrician for emergency repairs so that you get power to your refrigerated items quickly.  Your electrician in Northern Kentucky at Rose Brothers and Sons Electric is available 24/7 to help with all your electrical repairs.

What Lights Should I Add To My Bathroom?

what lights should I add to my bathroom? We are often asked, What lights should I add to my bathroom? The bathroom area is often overlooked when it comes to adding the right light fixtures. Modern baths and showers need more light than ever because the bath area is typically larger than in older homes. Here are a few things to consider when you consider where to place bathroom light fixtures.

Overhead Lighting and Recessed Lights

You will want to have an overhead light or add recessed lights to your bathroom. One of the mistakes people make is when they place these lights right above where you’ll stand. This puts light on top of your head, which isn’t flattering. It is better to have the overhead light behind you so that it doesn’t interfere with the task lights and what you see in the mirror. Don’t add too many recessed lights either. Shower and bathtub areas should also have overhead lights.

Task Lights

You should have a well-lit mirror. As we age, looking in the mirror becomes harder and harder. Task lights should be placed either above the mirror or on either side. Your electrician in Northern Kentucky can help you decide which is better and what will look the best when choosing light fixtures. Another common mistake when adding lights is to add them on one side and not the other. This causes an imbalance in the room that doesn’t usually look right. Although you rarely think of your shower light as task lighting it is usually best if the shower light is placed directly over where you stand so that you can see what you’re doing. Larger tubs and showers may need two lights.

What About Moisture Concerns

When you think about installing bathroom lighting, you should also put in a exhaust fan. This will help keep moisture down to a minimum. When choosing light fixtures don’t just ask yourself, what lights should I add to my bathroom? but also ask, which light fixtures will hold up to moisture? Avoid fabric on your light fixtures because of mold and mildew. Also brass and copper are not as durable as nickel, chrome and stainless finishes.  Shower light fixtures should be completely enclosed.

What Lights Should I Add To My Bathroom?

When it comes to adding light fixtures to your bathroom, Rose Brothers and Sons Electric can help you determine what lights you need and what will illuminate your bathroom so that you can see what you’re doing. Having the right light in the right place can make a world of difference. If you have questions about adding light fixtures to your bathroom or other electric installations, call us today. How To Save On Your Utilities This Winter

how to save on utilities this winterWe’d like to show you how to save on your Utilities this winter. If you haven’t already had an energy assessment, now may be a good time to call your electrician in Northern Kentucky to see how efficient your home is. You might be surprised to learn there are many ways to cut utility costs this fall. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Open all south facing window coverings to allow the sun to warm your house naturally in the daytime.
  • Cover drafty windows with tight fitting plastic. Select energy efficient window treatments the next time you replace your blinds or shades. Consider installing storm windows, which can save you 25% to 50% on heat loss through your windows.
  • Set your thermostat to the lowest setting you can tolerate during the day. Wear warm clothing to stay warm. At night lower the thermostat 10 to 15 degrees more for savings of up to 10%.
  • Seal Leaks around windows and doors using weather stripping or caulk. Find and seal leaks around pipes, gaps around the chimney and fireplace, gaps around recessed lights, and leaks in the unfinished spaces in cupboards and closets.

Fall Maintenance Prepares Your Home For Winter

Fall maintenance is a preventative way to prepare your home for winter and avoid winter time home repairs.  Your HVAC technician will make sure your heating system is clean and well lubricated: filters and vents that need changed or cleaned will be taken care of. Now is a good time to inspect the furnace, chimney, ducts and pipes for leaks, cracks or needed repairs. Insulate pipes, sweep the chimney, and cover your AC unit to get ready for colder weather.

Change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detector.  If you don’t have a quality smoke or carbon monoxide detector system, we can help with installation.

The Truth About Fireplaces

If you leave your chimney flue open all the time, you are losing heated air. It’s like having a window open in your home. Close the chimney flue after you’ve had a fire. Traditional fireplaces are not too effective when it comes to heating your house. Unless you have a newer fireplace insert you could be taking warm air from your room and simply sending it up the chimney. A better option to keep some of the heat in is to open a window near by about 1 inch. Close the doors to the room and turn your heat thermostat down to 50 or 55 degrees. This allows more of the heat to come into the room. Traditional fireplaces have been banned from new construction in some places because of the air pollution they cause.  You can save on your utilities by using your fireplace properly, adding a new insert or closing the flue between uses.  For more information visit the Energy.gov website about fireplaces and fireplace inserts.

A Simple Step To Save Electricity

One of the easiest ways you can save on electricity is by turning appliances off when you’re not using them. It is estimated over 3.5 billion dollars are wasted because most people leave computers and other appliances plugged in when they’re not in use. Using a power strip is the easiest way to save electricity from being used this way. Simply turn the power strip off when you’re not using the computer or appliance. This one simple step can save on your electric bill.

Replace Older Appliances

It is no coincidence that older houses and appliances use more energy. If you are wondering how to save on your Utilities this winter, consider upgrading your electricity or replacing older appliances with newer more energy efficient products. You’ll see savings right away.

Is Doing Your Own Electrical Work Worth It?

is doing your own electrical work worth it?Maintaining your home requires a little bit of work and money. Often you can take care of some of the repairs and upkeep yourself. At some point, you may need electrical repairs done or you may need some electrical upgrades. You may be a do-it-yourselfer who likes to save money fixing and repairing things yourself, but what you have to consider: is doing your own electrical work worth it?

The Cost of Electrical Repairs

Sure if you do it yourself, you only have the cost of the parts, not any labor. Sometimes however you have to buy parts in bulk or buy more than you need and you end up paying for parts you don’t use. If you hire an electrician in Northern Kentucky you only pay for the parts they use. You will pay for the time of a Master Electrician but what your getting is all the years of experience and knowledge they have. They are also licensed and insured which is an added protection to you as a homeowner.

The Time Involved

If you are working on your electrical system, and you’re not an expert, it will take you a lot longer then someone who does it everyday. You have to learn as you go and try different things. You may not really know what the problem is right off and replace parts that don’t really need replaced. Or you may fix the problem not realizing the problem was a symptom of another problem. When it comes to your electrical system, do you really want to take chances?

Is Doing Your Own Electrical Work Worth It?

If you decide to do your own electrical work then you need to be aware of when it is necessary to get a permit. You also need to be aware of codes and safety concerns. You don’t want to end up fixing a $30. Problem only to realize it will cost you hundreds of dollars because you made a mistake or started a fire.   You also don’t want to rig your electrical system and find out later it won’t pass an inspection. This can require more money and time when you may not have either.

The Best Solution

When you need electrical repairs or electrical upgrades, it makes sense to call a licensed electrician in Northern Kentucky who can get the job done quickly and done right. Some things are better left to the professionals and electrical repairs and upgrades fall into that category.   For you and your family’s safety and a job well done call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric today.

Hanging Outdoor Christmas Lights

hanging outdoor christmas lightsWith Thanksgiving just a week away, it’s time to talk about electrical safety and hanging outdoor Christmas lights. Many people begin decorating for the holidays during Thanksgiving weekend. Make sure you follow these simple rules from your electrician in Northern Kentucky,  to ensure your holidays don’t include a house fire or electrical repairs.

Choose The Right Decorations

When it comes to buying decorations for outdoors, safety should be first on your list. Make sure you check for a UL rating and that all your decorations are intended for outdoor use. To save on energy and ensure your lights burn cooler, consider buying LED light bulbs and light strings that use energy efficient LED lights.

Hanging Outdoor Christmas Lights

When hanging Christmas lights, make sure you don’t damage the cords with nails or staples. This can produce holes in the wiring that can leave the wires bare or cause the wires to short. Avoid putting too many lights on one extension cord. You can easily overload your circuit with too much electricity being used on one circuit breaker.

You may have noticed your kitchen and bath use GFCI outlets because the electricity is near a water source. This prevents electrocutions. These same outlets should be used with your outdoor lights. Rose Brothers and Sons electric will be happy to help you install the GFCI outlets or extra outlets to help ensure your electrical safety when you are hanging outdoor Christmas lights.

Make sure your lights are clear of doors and other tight areas. Door jams can cut the insulation on your wiring too. Also, keep pets and small children away from the outdoor lights and outlets.

Discard Older Decorations

If you have heirloom decorations that you enjoy, make sure the wiring is new. Older wiring is a hazard. Discard any decorations that need repair. Don’t use frayed or damaged cords.

Use A Timer

Keep your lights on a timer so that they turn off when you’re sleeping. This is safer and will help you save on your electric bill. Lights can be expensive to run.

If you are planning on decorating your house by hanging outdoor Christmas lights, play it safe with these simple suggestions. Rose Brothers and Sons Electric your electrician in Northern Kentucky is here to help with all your electrical needs.

A Whole Home Surge Protector Will Save You Money

whole home surge protectorA whole home surge protector can save you money. Whether you are worried about protecting your computer, TV or any large appliance, lightening strikes and electrical surges can damage appliances in your home.  It doesn’t take but one bad storm, one downed tree or one lightening strike to cause damage. Here are a few things you can do to protect your family and your electrical appliances.

Invest in a Whole Home Surge Protector

Recently my neighbor’s home was struck by lightening. One of his water pumps was damaged costing him 1300.00 to replace. Over the years I have heard similar stories of homeowners who lost costly electrical equipment because of lightening. Investing in a whole home surge protector could have saved them from the expense of replacing appliances and office equipment.

Most people know that lighting can cause damage to their TV and appliances and yet many of us don’t take the time to unplug our appliances every time a storm comes or every time we leave the house. You can rely on a whole home surge protector to protect your belongings even when you’re away.

Full Protection

Whole home surge protectors will protect you home from up to 40,000 amps or more depending on the size of the protector. Adding this to your electrical panel will protect your home, but you still need individual surge protector outlets and/or power strips. Having both will ensure you are protected from lighting and power surges within your home.

Dedicated Circuits

Having your TV, Computer or other appliances on dedicated circuits can also protect you and your electrical equipment from electrical fluctuations that could cause poor TV quality, or surges when other appliances on the same circuit start running. This can result in fluctuations, surges and the like that can become a problem.

Your Electrician Can Help

If you want to learn more about installing a whole home surge protector or if you are considering adding a few dedicated circuits, your electrician can provide you with information and help with the installations. Call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric  your electrician in Northern Kentucky, for all your electrical needs.

Common Electrical Accidents

electrical accidentsCommon electrical accidents can usually be prevented if you are careful.  Using your appliances and extension cords properly and having good wiring may be all you need to do to prevent an electrical accident. Here are a few things to consider to keep you and your family safe.

Water and Electricity Don’t Mix

Most people know to avoid using electrical appliances around water or while taking a bath.  What you may not know is that every year many electrical accidents occur because of using electricity around water.  All outlets that are in the vicinity of water should have the proper GFCI receptacle.  This includes, your kitchen, bath areas, laundry rooms, garage and pool areas as required by National Electrical codes.  An electrical inspection can reveal if you need to add more of these to areas of your house.

Cords and Plugs

By far the most common electrical accidents that are fatal occur because cords and plugs aren’t used properly.  Extension cords and surge protectors should be used carefully.  Never overload your cords and never use an extension cord for a permanent hook up.  Don’t hide extension cords under carpeting or rugs.  The biggest thing to remember is never use a cord that is damaged by melting or missing insulation.  If the cord or plug looks damaged, replace it or the appliance right away.  It is not worth the risk to use a damaged cord or plug.  Also, make sure you use the right outlet for the plug.  Never force a 3-prong plug into a regular outlet.

Appliances

If you’re using an appliance and you notice a burning smell, see smoke or hear a buzzing sound that is unusual, stop using the appliance until you can have it examined.  Most small appliances just need to be replaced at this point.

Fixtures

Be sure and pay attention to the bulb wattage that is recommended for your fixtures.  Putting a 100 watt bulb into a fixture rated for 40 watts can melt the wiring and cause shocks or fires.  Plugging a plug adapter into your fixture can also be dangerous and can easily overload your fixture.

Household Wiring and Electrical Accidents

When it comes to the safety of your home, you are better off allowing a professional electrician service your electrical system, circuit breakers and wiring.  If you are moving into a new home or have an older home, having an electrical inspection can give you the information you need to protect your family.  You want to make sure the wiring is done correctly and that no circuits are overloaded.  Anytime you detect a potential problem with your electricity it is important to get repairs done right away.  Your electrician in Northern Kentucky will be happy to help.  Call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric today.

Recessed Lights in Northern Kentucky

recessed lights in Northern KentuckyRecessed lighting in Northern Kentucky can make a huge difference in the look and function of your kitchen or living room.  When you choose recessed lighting it is a good idea to decide beforehand what is most important to you, looks or function?  Having all the lights line up or form a pattern may look neat on the ceiling but not really provide the light you were hoping for.  Your electrician in Northern Kentucky can help you design your lighting to look and function well.

Recessed Lights in the Kitchen

As a rule of thumb, for homes with 8’ or 9’ ceilings, you should space the recessed lights every 5 or 6 feet apart for standard 6” recessed cans.  This can be a challenge if you are working towards centering them with your upper cabinets.  It is usually better to have them closer than further apart.

You should have recessed lights centered on both sides of the range.  Also a recessed light centered at the sink area.  This light is often placed on a separate switch so you can use it to do the dishes without lighting up the whole kitchen.  All remaining recessed lights should be centered with the upper cabinets and be around 5-6 feet apart and 24” -27” inches from the wall, depending on how deep the cabinets are.

The most important thing to remember is to center between 2 double cabinets and center between the cabinet door, of a single cabinet.  You also want to make sure the light hits the area on the counter where you need it and not your back or the back of your head.

Recessed Lights In the Living Room

Following the same rules, you will want to start out with recessed lighting on either side of a fireplace or entertainment center.   You may also want to have recessed lighting in places that you need extra light such as over a writing desk or to highlight a focal point in a corner.

Vaulted ceilings can also be tricky because you will want to make sure you align them to get the best use of the light.  Special recessed lights can help.

Choosing Light Bulbs

Which light bulbs you choose will determine the look of your Northern Kentucky recessed Lights.  If you use regular incandescent light bulbs you will have a yellow, warm feel.  Adding florescent light bulbs will give you a whiter look and can cost less to run.  Halogen lights are also whiter and brighter but you have an option to put them on a dimmer so that you can control how bright they are.

Installing Recessed Lights in Northern Kentucky

It is important when you choose your recessed lights to make sure that you pick lights with the right IC Rating if they are near your insulation.  Air Lock Rated recessed cans will also prevent air from escaping and help with energy efficiency.  Recessed lights also come in a variety of styles to choose from.

Rose Brothers and Sons Electric will be happy to help you with your recessed lighting in Northern Kentucky.  We have decades of experience installing recessed lighting and helping homeowners take advantage of the many different lighting options there are.  We will be happy to work with you to get the look and feel you want.  When you are thinking about adding recessed lights in Northern Kentucky, call the experts at Rose Brothers & Sons Electric.
