Electrical Wiring For New Laundry Room

electrical hookups

Unlike other rooms in your home, the laundry room has special requirements for the electrical wiring because the laundry room must supply the washer, the dryer, and the lighting. Due to the complexity of supplying all of the necessary electrical hookups to your laundry room, it is advised to seek help from a professional electrician. The qualified team of electricians at Rose Brothers and Sons Electric can help you install new electrical hookups to meet all of the electrical needs in your new laundry room.

In most laundry rooms, there are typically three different electrical circuits to supply all of the necessary electrical power to the laundry room.

  • The washing machine requires a 20-amp electrical circuit to supply the required 120-volt power supply. The washing machine plug consists of a hot wire with 120 volts, a neutral wire and a ground wire.
  • An electric dryer requires a 30-amp dedicated electrical circuit to run both the 240-volt and 120-volt power supplies. The dryer requires 240 volts to run the heating element and 120 volts to run the timer, clock, buzzer and other electrical features. The dryer has a four-prong plug with two hot wires for the 240 volts and 120 volts, a neutral wire and a ground wire.
  • The lighting requires a standard 15-amp circuit to supply power to the light fixtures in the room. The lighting circuit can be on the same circuit as an adjacent room or hallway.

Electrical Wiring

Adding electrical hookups to your new laundry room is not a difficult task for professionals, but there are specific requirements that must be met. Before beginning, the electrician will need to confirm that your electrical panel has an adequate load capacity and space for all of the required circuits and breakers for the new laundry room.   Next, the electrical hookups will be installed within six feet of each unit approximately 34-36 inches off of the ground.   All outlets in the laundry room are required to be ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets to protect against electrocution.  As previously mentioned, the washer and dryer will also each require specific electrical circuits in order to provide the required amount of power. Then, the lighting and any other outlets will need to be electrically powered through a standard 15-amp circuit. Finally, if there is no outdoor window, an exhaust fan is required to provide a minimum of five air exchanges per hour and will need to be connected to the electric circuit.

For an experienced and qualified electrician, adding electrical wiring for a new laundry room is not a challenging task. The electricians at Rose Brothers and Sons Electric have years of experience offering electrical services in Northern Kentucky, southern Indiana, and the Greater Cincinnati area. We specialize in residential service changes, including installing primary services and electrical hookups in new laundry rooms. Flickering Lights: When To Call An Electrician

Flickering lightsFlickering lights are one of the more annoying things that you can deal with in your home. Instead of bright light illuminating a room, a flickering bulb halfheartedly lights up a space and can drive anyone crazy. Although super hard to ignore, flickering lights usually are no big deal besides being a nuisance. Sometimes, however, it can be a sign of a bigger issue. This article will break down some causes of flickering lights and whether you should be worried about them or not.  If you’re not sure what the problem is, call your Northern Kentucky Electrician, Rose Brothers and Sons Electric.

Fluorescent and LED Lights

Some bulbs are more prone to flickering than others. Sometimes fluorescent lights will flicker for a few minutes when you just turn them on as they warm up, and some LED lights flicker when not properly connected to a driver or a dimmer switch. These are not serious issues so do not be too worried, but you may still want to replace the lights if the flickering gets too annoying.

Loose Bulb or Faulty Switch

Loose bulbs and faulty switches are two other reasons that your lights are flickering that do not warrant serious action to fix. For loose bulbs, turn off your light and once it has cooled down try screwing the bulb back in tighter. If the switch is acting up, try toggling it on and off or letting it sit for a while. If you turn it back on and neither of these quick fixes turn out to be the solution, then your problem lies elsewhere.

Voltage Fluctuation

If your lights flicker when you turn on an appliance with high wattage, you could have a problem with your voltage fluctuating too much. Other signs are lights that seem to dim or frequently burn out. Electricity typically flows into homes at 120 volts and fluctuates between 115 and 125. You can check the voltage flowing through your home with a device called a voltmeter if you have one. If the average is outside of the 115 to 125 range, call an electrician and get some help.

Loose Electrical Wiring Causes Flickering Lights

Loose wiring is the most common cause of flickering lights and also a major cause of house fires. Shut off the light at the circuit breaker before removing the fixture, then double check the wiring. If it looks loose or insecure, you need to call an electrician. Or if even after this you still have not found the reason, call an electrician to figure out what the issue really is.

Now that you know what to look for when it comes to flickering lights, call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, the best place for electrical repairs in Northern Kentucky.

Avoiding Common Wiring Mistakes in Northern Kentucky

common wiring mistakesCommon wiring mistakes can create a problem for homeowners who aren’t aware of the problem. Often do-it-yourself projects can create an electrical wiring nightmare that isn’t discovered until someone gets hurt or the house burns down. Many times unsuspecting homeowners have to confess to electrical project mistakes during a home inspection where they realize some of the jobs they undertook were better left to professional electricians in Northern Kentucky.  Understanding building codes and how to wire your home is what makes a professional electrician stand out.

Common Wiring Mistakes

Many times we find areas of the home where the wiring is put in backwards. Neutral wires in an outlet are connected to the wrong wires. Often this won’t cause any problem with the appliances you plug in but can potentially cause a life threatening shock if left undetected.

Another problem we often see is either not using wire nuts or connectors, or not putting the connections into a junction box. This can cause problems if there is a short. A wire nut or electrical box will protect your wiring and the surrounding area if there is an electrical short or arch.

Many times novice electricians will cut corners when it comes to all the specific wires and connectors that need to be properly placed to avoid fire or injury. Your professional electrician in Northern Kentucky knows what the rules are for safety and to pass building codes in the area. Using too small a junction box or putting too many wires inside the box is a good example of problems that can occur when you aren’t sure what you’re doing or you’re trying to fix your electrical wires without the right equipment.

If you don’t know much about electricity and don’t understand the correct way to run ground wires to your home, it is best to hire a residential electrical contractor to help with all your electrical needs. This will make sure you avoid common wiring mistakes that could end up costing you a ransom in costly repairs.

How To Find The Right Indoor Lighting

how to find the right indoor lightingWe can show you how to find the right indoor lighting to create the ambiance you want and the light you need.  When you think about remodeling your home and installing light fixtures, you have a few things to consider. Here are a few questions that you need to answer before you look at installing indoor lighting.  How will adding lights affect the colors in the room?  What is the room used for and what Working Lights Do I Need? Will the fixtures be visible and match the decor?   As the top concerns when considering how to find the right indoor lighting, we’ll discuss them here.

How Will Adding Lights Affect The Colors In The Room?

Lighting has a lot to do with the colors you see.  You can look at a color in direct sunlight and see an entirely different color than under a florescent light.  Different lighting does affect the colors you see.  If you love the color in your living room for example, you might not want to change the lighting from incandescent to florescent.  It could in fact change the entire look of the colors in your room.  Make sure when you are choosing the indoor lights that you take into consideration the overall look of your bulbs and the brightness or dimness in respect to colors in the room.  When it comes to adding ambiance to a room, the indoor lighting has a huge affect and can really make or break the mood in the room.

What Is The Room Used For and What Working Lights Do I Need?

Think about the room you are remodeling and the type of lights you need to work in the room.  Kitchens often need not only good overhead lighting but task lights under cabinets.  A living room might need a variety of lighting.  Some to illuminate the entire room during a get together and others to light up a corner for early morning reading.  What about the basement or garage?  Maybe a large florescent fixture would light up your work area.  As you can see considering what the room is used for will lead you to the right type of indoor lighting.

Will The Fixtures Be Visible And Match The Decor?

This is really important when you consider how to find the right indoor lighting.  Many lamps, chandeliers and other light fixtures are created to match your decor.  Today’s trend is toward large lights and fixtures so match your existing decor or theme is extremely important when you’re installing indoor lights.  If the lights will be out of sight, you have more room to wiggle.  Don’t forget lights that you don’t really think about being decorative such as recessed lighting do allow you some room to choose colors and materials that are visible.

How To Find The Right Indoor Lighting

Electrical Safety and Fire Prevention

electrical safety and fire preventionElectrical safety and fire prevention is an important topic to think about as the winter approaches. Families will spend more time in the home increasing the use of lights, heaters and appliances. It is estimated that most home fires occur in the wintertime. Here are a few facts about electrical safety and fire prevention:

The Statistics For Electrical Fires

The United States Fire Administration collects fire statistics each year.  Electrical fires claim over 450 lives in America each year and account for over 2300 injuries. Home electrical problems cause 67,800 fires and over $860 million in property losses. Although electrical appliances do cause some fires, home electrical wiring causes twice as many. Most of these can be attributed to poor maintenance, electrical wiring that is installed incorrectly and overloaded circuits or extension cords.

Causes of Residential Electrical Fires

Electrical Wiring causes  1/3 of fires because of faulty electrical outlets and old electrical wiring. Other fires are caused by incorrect use of extension cords. Most of these fires can be avoided with electrical safety and fire prevention. Overloading circuits, not maintaining appliances properly and not getting necessary electrical repairs cause a majority of home fires.

Electrical Safety and Fire Prevention

  • Routinely check you electrical appliances and wiring. If you see or smell smoke don’t use the outlet or appliance.
  • Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace any worn or damaged appliance cords immediately.
  • Use extension cords properly and don’t overload them. Don’t run extension cords under rugs.
  • Keep electrical appliances away form water sources at all times. This includes wet floors.
  • Don’t allow children to play around electrical appliances. Use child-proof plug covers.
  • Keep clothes, curtains and other combustible items away from heaters.
  • Don’t use a 3-prong plug in a 2-slot outlet.
  • Call your electrician is your outlet or light switch gets hot to the touch or your lights flicker.
  • Make sure you have a working smoke alarm and that it is rated to detect flames as well as smoldering smoke.

Keeping Squirrels and Raccoons Out Of Your Attic

keeping squirrels and raccoons out of your atticKeeping Squirrels and Raccoons out of your attic can become a big job. These rodents love to take up residence in your attic and any other part of your home if you’ll allow it. One family we know had a pest squirrel that thought he owned the house and often came out of the attic and into the kitchen whenever he got a chance. Although many people think squirrels and raccoons are cute, when they’re causing trouble in your attic, you begin to look at them a little differently. They can chew electrical wires, causing damage and electrical repairs and they can also cause fire hazards. Keeping Squirrels and raccoons out of your attic is important because they carry disease, lice, ticks and fleas too. We hope these tips will help.

Tips For Getting Rid of Squirrels And Raccoons In The Attic

  1. If you hear the noise of squirrels or other rodents in the attic, you can take a look and see if you notice the signs of nesting or chewed electrical wires. Rodents often get into insulation and other items in the attic looking for a place to nest. You can look for holes too and other entry openings. The best way to eliminate the rodents is to block their holes. If you put a flap on the outside of the opening, you can try to make sure they get out but not back in. They will leave looking for food and not be able to reenter. Make sure you look for nests so if babies are in the attic they don’t die and cause an odor.
  2. Call a professional exterminator or trapper. If you have a serious problem with squirrels or raccoons, you can call for professional pest control. This is often the easiest way of getting rid of the pests. Once animals are relocated and the holes blocked, you usually can avoid the problem in the future.
  3. Squirrels and Raccoons are expert climbers.  You can avoid some of the ease of entering your attic by removing trees and branches that overhang your roof.  Don’t be fooled though, a busy rodent can find a way in if they are determined.

Keeping Squirrels And Raccoons Out Of Your Attic

Once you have had a problem with rodents in your attic, you can see why it is so important to keep them away. Damage to your wood and insulation, and damage to your electrical wiring can be costly. They can also damage ductwork, ceilings and more. Once you take care of the problem, you can begin doing the necessary repairs to fix whatever damage they have done.

Protecting Your Electrical System During a Storm

protecting your electrical system during a stormIt is hard to imagine, March is right around the corner and Daylight Saving Time will soon begin. Winter and early spring storms often cause power outages. Your local power company will resolve many of these power outages, but more often than not, the power outage can cause home electrical problems. You can protect your electrical system before a major storm to prevent the need for emergency electrical repairs in Northern Kentucky.

Protecting Your Electrical System During A Storm

Although you may experience many storms in your lifetime, it only takes one storm to damage your electrical system, appliances, electrical wiring, wall outlets and other electrical gadgets in your home. Another problem can occur if lightening strikes.
According to the National Geographic, lightening can travel phone lines and electrical wiring. You should unplug appliances and never use the phone when lightening or a thunderstorm is near. Your washer and dryer is a triple threat because it has electrical wiring, plumbing and a vent that connects it to the outside. Most people don’t go around unplugging appliances but caution should be taken if a storm is close. Turning the power off at the circuit breaker or using a good surge protector can help.  Surge Protectors do not protect against direct lightening strikes.

Types of Surge Protectors

• Surge Arrester – This is a whole-house system that is installed in or near a home’s main electric service panel and offers protection against voltage surges up to 20,000 volts (such as a lightning strike).
• Surge Suppressor – This surge protection device is a power strip that can handle up to 6,000 volts. A surge suppressor protects only the electrical equipment that is plugged into it.
Both types of surge protectors will also protect your appliances from electrical surges as the electricity is turned back on.

Emergency Electrical Services in Northern Kentucky

Most people who experience a power outage will begin to wonder if their neighbors are experiencing the same thing. They will either look across the street to see if lights are on or they’ll call their neighbor down the road. If you notice your neighborhood has lost power and then when it comes back on you still have no power, you may want to call for 24 hour a day emergency electrical service. You may also notice that the power is back on but one or more of your appliances are not working properly. This type of damage should be considered serious and an electrician should investigate to make sure your home is safe. For your safety and the safety of your family, you are better off erring on the side of precaution and having an electrical inspection to make sure there is no potential for house fires later on. For electrical repairs and service, call your electrical contractor in Northern Kentucky, Rose Brothers and Sons Electric and they will be happy to help you.
