Electrician for Attic Ventilation and Outlet Installation

attic ventilation

At Rose Brothers and Sons we have the know-how and experience to install ventilation and outlets in your attic. We are committed to doing the job right the first time. We want your repeat business because we did a great job the first time, not because you had to call us back to fix our own mistake. Hiring a professional with a good reputation is the smart thing to do, every time. So call us today and we’ll get right out there.

Attic Ventilation –

To Vent or Not to Vent?

Having enough of the proper ventilation for your attic can be very important. If your home doesn’t have enough ventilation, there is a possibility of moisture problems in the winter and a decrease in your home’s energy efficiency in the summer months. It’s just a myth that attic ventilation is more beneficial in warmer climates and in the summer months than in colder climates and in the winter. Actually, the colder the climate, the more your home may benefit from attic ventilation.

DIY or Hire a Professional Electrician

There is certainly no shortage of Do it Yourself websites and You Tube videos out there to show you how to add an electrical outlet or ventilation fan in your attic. But some things really probably should be left to professionals. Electricity is dangerous at best and down-right deadly at worst. A professional electrician will know how to do the job safely, be up to date on building codes, know when or if a building permit is needed as well as obtain the necessary permits. Additionally, if electrical wiring is not done properly it can cause even more problems, like shorting out the entire house, or worse, starting a fire.

Do Your Homework

Not every electrician is created equal.   In this digital age it’s easy to find trusted businesses to hire for your home repairs. Websites like Angie’s List and the Better Business Bureau will give you a good starting place to look for an electrician in good standing and with good reviews. Some electricians only care about making money, so they do a lot less for a lot more (of your money). Like a good mechanic, an experienced and trustworthy electrician is worth their weight in gold.

At Rose Brothers and Sons Electric we have an excellent record on Angie’s List and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. We have years of experience, a great reputation and loyal customers who call us time and again whenever they need electrical work done. Call today for an appointment.

Lightning and Home Wiring Repairs

home wiring repairsLightning is one of the most incredible and terrifying natural phenomena on Earth. You do not want to be struck by lightning, and you definitely do not want lightning to strike your home. This article will break down what happens when lightning hits your home requiring home wiring repairs and how you should deal with it.

Fire Damage

The biggest danger to a house struck by lightning is that it might catch on fire. Lightning tries to travel through conductive materials on its way to the ground, and your home is full of them. Electric, gas, and water lines are all easy paths for lightning to travel through. And when the lightning is passing through these systems it will most likely come in contact with wood or other highly flammable materials. Most lightning caused fires start in the roof area because it has to pass through that structural material before it can reach the more conducive pathways. However, if it gets through the roof fine you still are not safe. Lightning tends to burn up electrical wires, presenting another serious fire hazard that is throughout your entire home.  Even if you are lucky enough to not end up with a fire, your home will still require home wiring repairs.

Power Surge

Another major issue with lightning striking your home is surge damage. If lightning is passing through your home’s electrical wires, it can over power devices connected to them and cause serious damage with an explosive power surge. The sheer force of a power surge can damage even non-electrical devices. Even if just a little bit of lightning travels through your electrical wires while the rest takes another path to the ground, there still could be a surge with enough force to destroy most connected electric items.

Shock Waves

Another huge source of damage from lightning is from an explosive shockwave. These shockwaves produced by lightning are what causes the thunder we hear from miles and miles away. If that is the sound they make from far away, just imagine how destructive they will be up close. Lightning can easily shatter concrete, brick, and stone. They can also crumble plaster walls, shatter glass, and cause serious damage to your home’s foundation. Plus it also can produce shrapnel, with tiny, sharp pieces of debris flying everywhere causing even more damage.

Home Wiring Repairs In Northern Kentucky

Now that you know all of the terrible things lightning can do to a house, if something is wrong with your electric system call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, the best place for electrical repair in Northern Kentucky.

5 Tips For Choosing Lights

greater cincinnati Electrical contractorRose Brothers and Sons Electric offer these 5 tips for choosing lights for your home. As Greater Cincinnati electrical contractors, we are often asked to install lighting in new homes. Here are a few ideas to help you make the most out of your indoor and outdoor lights

1.What Are Your Goals

When you begin choosing the lights for your new home, remember that most rooms require more than one type of lighting. Task lights, overhead lights and aesthetic lights are all important. Consider your kitchen for example. You’ll need a good overhead light for most activities and a few task lights to help you see. Lights are often added at the stove area, around the sink where you do dishes and under cabinets where you may need more direct light.   Choosing the right lighting for each individual room will create the right ambience in each room and give you the task lighting that makes you comfortable.

2. Choosing Lights For Safety and Security

Whether you are discussing indoor lights or outdoor lights, choosing lights to help you keep from falling or lights to deter intruders, should be one of your top priorities.  Outdoors lighting should include lights along the walkways and at the entryways.  This allows you ample light keep from tripping and to find your keys so you can get inside your home quickly.  Lights on steps inside and out will help keep you from tripping and missing a step.  Motion sensor lights work well in areas where you need lights for brief moments when you’re passing by.  You should also install motion sensor lights around your house to keep intruders at bay.  When it comes to adding lights to the outside of your home, you want to make sure the lighting isn’t so bright it will keep you or your neighbors up at night.

3. Choosing Lights For Aesthetics

Outdoors lighting can really add charm to your home at night.  light sconces can be added either pointing down or up to give your home some character at night.  Lights can also turn architectural aspects of your home into wonderful focal points.  When you think about adding lights for looks to your home, take a tour of your neighborhood and see if you find any homes that light up nicely.  Often neighborhoods are unique in the way they use outdoor lighting.

Indoor lighting is just as important when it comes to adding to your decor and design style.  This is especially true when you consider hanging lights or chandeliers.  Make sure the lighting you choose doesn’t outdate your home but instead, matches the decor and design of your home.  If you have high ceilings, adding lights towards the ceiling can really add a nice touch.  Recessed lighting is often all you need.  You can choose recessed lighting that is stationary or that is directional based on your needs.

4.  Choosing Lights For Ambience

Lights have a way of setting the tone for each room they are in.  Choose your lights well and make sure you choose the correct size light bulb for each lamb or light fixture.  Not only the size but the wattage is important.  The correct wattage is necessary to keep you safe from fires and melting fixtures.  Also choosing the wattage to add the right ambience is important.  A light that is too bright will make you feel uncomfortable.  Likewise, a low light that might be perfect in a bedroom would be hard to live with in other areas of the home.  Lighting can create a comfort that adds to your home and makes your rooms more inviting.

Rose Brothers and Sons Electric can help you choose lights for your home.  If you need help picking out fixtures or determining where to place your lights, call the lighting experts at Rose Brothers and Sons Electric.  We can help you install all the lighting you’ll need.

Space Heater Safety

space heater safetyMany people resort to using space heaters to keep warm in the winter. They work great and do a good job when they are used properly. Unfortunately many people don’t know enough about using a space heater to keep them safe. According to a NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) report in 2013, over half the deaths caused by heater related fires resulted from improper use of space heaters. Here are a few precautions to help you use Space Heaters Wisely.

It Matters Where You Place Your Space Heater

One of the leading causes of space heater fires results from space heaters being placed to close to combustible items or items that burn easily. Keep your space heater away from combustible storage items and cleaning supplies. Don’t put your space heater too close to upholstered furniture, bedding, clothes or mattresses. Keep children and pets away from your heater and teach them to avoid it .

Combustion Space Heaters

Space heaters come in 2 types, those you plug in and those that operate with combustible propane or kerosene. Combustion heaters should only be used outdoors in well-ventilated areas. Because they give off carbon monoxide fumes, they should never be used in enclosed areas. Even tents and other outdoor situations don’t create enough ventilation to make using a combustion heater safe. They can get extremely hot and can ignite combustible items quickly.

Electric Space Heaters

Electric Space heaters can be used indoors. There are several different kinds of electric space heaters. Small space heaters are ideal for rooms around 100 sq. feet (about 10×10). They can have metal coils or ceramic encased wires. They normally have 2 settings and can operate on 1000 watts or 1500 watts. Some have oscillating fans to spread the heat over a larger area. Larger rooms are best kept warm with convection units or electric radiators because they are quieter and don’t use a fan. They can come in upright designs or baseboard heaters.

Do Space Heaters Save You Money?

Space Heaters that run off electric are more expensive to run than other heaters. The only way you can save money using a space heater is if you turn the thermostat down in other areas of the house to offset the use of the electric. This works well if you spend the majority of your time in a single room or you have a home office or workshop you need to keep warm.

Space Heater Safety – Use Space Heaters Wisely

Newer Space heaters are safer. They have grills to protect you from burns, safety thermostats that turn off when it’s too hot or the space heater tips over.   Heaters for bathrooms and wet areas need to be rated for damp areas to avoid causing electrical shorts.

Space Heaters require a lot of electrical current. The cords can become hot. Don’t use an extension cord and never run the heater cord under a rug or furniture where a fire might get started. If you have to use an extension cord make sure it is rated for the load your heater has.

Be careful when you choose to use a space heater. Place it away from anything that will burn and use precaution.

If you have any safety concerns about your heating system or electrical system, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric and they will be happy to help you. Don’t put up with annoying electrical problems when you have trusted electricians only a phone call away.

Setting New Year’s Resolutions

new year's resolutionSetting New Year’s Resolutions has been a tradition for many years. In fact the tradition dates back as far as the ancient Babylonians who made promises to their gods at the start of each new year. They would promise to return items they borrowed and pay back debts. The Romans began each year making promises to the god Janus and that is why the first month in the calendar year is January. Traces of the tradition of setting a New Year’s Resolution continued, through the Middle Ages and on.

Judaism and The New Year

During Rosh Hashanah and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) Jewish people reflect upon their actions over the year and seek forgiveness and offer forgiveness to others. This is similar to personal reflection and promises made during the lent season.

Reflecting Upon Self Improvement – New Year’s Resolutions

New year’s Resolutions involve many aspects of life. Physically you may want to exercise more, eat less or start walking a mile each day. Mentally you may decide to smile more often or quit being negative. You may want to improve your career or finances. The decision to volunteer more, pray more often or take a trip is a common goal for the New Year. Deciding to remodel your home or settle down and get married may be on your list too.

Decisions To Take Care of You and Your loved Ones Better

You may decide to make changes to your life or to better the lives of your loved ones. Having an electrician who can help keep you and your family safe is one idea. You can call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric to get a safety audit to make sure your home’s electric is safe and the wiring won’t cause an electrical fire. You may also decide to upgrade your electrical services in the New Year. If you have any questions or need your electrician’s assistance, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric today.

Summer Safety Tips from an Electrician in Covington KY

electrician in Covington KYHere are a few summer tips from your electrician in Covington KY.  This is the time of year when it is important to go over a few electrical tips with your family.  Keeping your family safe from electrical hazards can prevent a tragedy that is all too common this time of year.  Not only are people spending more time working and playing outdoors but with the summer storms, lightning and downed powered lines can also be a threat.  These are the precautions that could save your life.

Lightning

This time of year electrical storms and lightening is a threat.  If you are outside during a storm, stay out of the pool and other bodies of water.  Make sure you seek shelter as soon as you can.  Don’t seek shelter under a tree or other object that may get struck by lightning.  If you have to remain outside, a ditch or car is a better place to seek shelter.

Downed Power Lines

Avoid downed powered lines.  Electricity can travel more than people realize.  Even a trained electrician will avoid an area with a downed power line.  Never attempt to cross a downed line in your car.  Never try to release someone who is trapped by a downed power line.  It is best to call the power company or trained personnel to rescue someone.  If you are in your car and can drive away from a downed power line that is best.  If you are stuck under a downed power line then you should stay in your car until help arrives.  If you can’t, jump as far away from the car as possible and try to land on both feet.  There is no guarantee you won’t feel the shock.  Because electricity can travel in ways we don’t always see, you can get electrocuted across the street form a downed power line just by stepping in a small puddle.  Electricity is dangerous when it is out of control, so be careful.

Electrical Cords and Equipment in Water

Be sure and keep all electrical cords and electrical equipment away from water.  This includes using electrical lawn equipment in wet grass.  Don’t leave tools plugged in outside or near water.  Be careful of plug in radios and other electrical entertainment near water, lakes and pools.

Overhead Power Lines

Power lines overhead can electrocute you if you’re not careful.  You should stay at least 15 ft away from a power line if possible.  Never fly a kite or airplane near a power line.  If you get a kite stuck in a power line, you should call your local electrical company.  Avoid using metallic parts on your kites.

If you are doing yard work or need to go on the roof, be aware of where the power lines are.  Make sure you keep trees trimmed from the power lines.

Underground Power Lines

Before you dig, call your local electric company and have them locate your power lines.  This is usually free and can save you from accidents, repairs and loss of service.  Underground wires can be just as deadly as overhead lines.

Motorized Window Treatments

Motorized Window Treatments

Window treatment systems that have motorized components come is a variety of configurations. The motors are usually installed in the headrails of the windows that have venetian blinds, shades or wooden blinds. Windows that have roller shades accommodate the motor in the tube section of the window. In window fitting that move horizontally for example, drapes, have to have tracks installed. The motors are concealed form one side and hang on the rail on the other side.

Planning

During the construction of a home, it is important to plan for the type of window system you would like to have. This makes it easier to plan the wiring required for the system. Some systems require high voltage wiring that can be be drawn from your home’s electrical sockets. However, some systems require low voltage wiring, which is safer but needs to planned in advance. Motorized window treatments work on alternating current from you electrical outlets or on direct current from a battery or a transformer. These batteries or transformers can be concealed in the walls as well during construction.
Alternating current is mostly required for windows treatments that are heavy as these require more powerful motors. A battery working on direct current is sufficient for windows treatments that are smaller or have light material.
In cases where it is not certain if a battery can take the load of the material used for the blind, it is always safer to use a high voltage motor. A battery or DC motor can be connected to the wiring set up for a high voltage motor. The reverse however is not possible.

The choice of motorized window blind as well as the source of current depend on the specific needs of the home. So it is important to decide what kind of motorized window treatments you want when you are looking at the blue prints of your new home.

The windows blinds with motorized systems are wired to be connected to a main electric panel. Before installing a motorized window treatments it is also important to take into consideration any rules and building codes that the local community might have with regard to safety and power consumption.

If you’re still looking for motorized window treatments, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of wiring, call our friends at Stamper’s Blinds Gallery! They have battery-powered, long-lasting motorized window treatments that are a fantastic alternative to traditional wired blinds.
