Hanging Outdoor Christmas Lights

hanging outdoor christmas lightsWith Thanksgiving just a week away, it’s time to talk about electrical safety and hanging outdoor Christmas lights. Many people begin decorating for the holidays during Thanksgiving weekend. Make sure you follow these simple rules from your electrician in Northern Kentucky,  to ensure your holidays don’t include a house fire or electrical repairs.

Choose The Right Decorations

When it comes to buying decorations for outdoors, safety should be first on your list. Make sure you check for a UL rating and that all your decorations are intended for outdoor use. To save on energy and ensure your lights burn cooler, consider buying LED light bulbs and light strings that use energy efficient LED lights.

Hanging Outdoor Christmas Lights

When hanging Christmas lights, make sure you don’t damage the cords with nails or staples. This can produce holes in the wiring that can leave the wires bare or cause the wires to short. Avoid putting too many lights on one extension cord. You can easily overload your circuit with too much electricity being used on one circuit breaker.

You may have noticed your kitchen and bath use GFCI outlets because the electricity is near a water source. This prevents electrocutions. These same outlets should be used with your outdoor lights. Rose Brothers and Sons electric will be happy to help you install the GFCI outlets or extra outlets to help ensure your electrical safety when you are hanging outdoor Christmas lights.

Make sure your lights are clear of doors and other tight areas. Door jams can cut the insulation on your wiring too. Also, keep pets and small children away from the outdoor lights and outlets.

Discard Older Decorations

If you have heirloom decorations that you enjoy, make sure the wiring is new. Older wiring is a hazard. Discard any decorations that need repair. Don’t use frayed or damaged cords.

Use A Timer

Keep your lights on a timer so that they turn off when you’re sleeping. This is safer and will help you save on your electric bill. Lights can be expensive to run.

If you are planning on decorating your house by hanging outdoor Christmas lights, play it safe with these simple suggestions. Rose Brothers and Sons Electric your electrician in Northern Kentucky is here to help with all your electrical needs.

How to Reduce Your Utility Bill At Work

How to Reduce your utility bill at workYou can learn how to reduce your utility bill at work. Rose Brothers and Sons Electric can help you with a few tips to reduce your monthly spending and still use as much electricity as you need.

Power Down Electronics

It may seem like a small thing, but you would be surprised how much electricity each of your office equipment or machinery drains when not in use. You can save on electricity by turning machines off when you’re not using them. Computers can also waste energy. Make sure all the computers in your office are set to sleep when not in use and to power down totally at night. This is one of the ways how to reduce your utility bill at work.

Install Programmable Thermostats

Some workplaces have open thermostats that get abused daily. Other workplaces rely on employees to turn the air or heat off or down at night. This usually ends up being done on a hit or miss basis which costs your company money. Installing a programmable thermostat allows you to program the time of day to stop and start heating and cooling and at what temperature you want the building to stay at.  Once you set the temperature you and your employees can dress to stay warm or cool.  Raising or Lowering the temperature can control how often the air or heat is on and help reduce your spending.  Your can also reduce your utility bill at work by adding ceiling fans and opening windows when it is appropriate.

Install Motion Sensor Lights

In areas that aren’t occupied often, consider installing motions sensor lights. These come on automatically as someone enters the room and turn off themselves too. This can save your electric use as you can imagine.

Use LED lights

Led lights consume much less energy than incandescent or florescent lights. They are also long lasting and durable. When compared to regular lighting they are rated 60% more energy efficient.

Use Natural lighting

Make use of every opportunity to allow natural light to come into your building. There are also many commercial window treatments that allow light in but still maintain privacy.

Consider Air Quality

When it comes to dust and other pollutants, your machinery, air filters and other electronics will work better in a cleaner environment. Dust cannot only cause allergies to you and your employees but it can cause your electronics to run hot. This can cause them to work slower and consume more energy staying cool, which results in a shorter lifespan and greater energy consumption.

How to Reduce Your Utility Bill at Work

These are just a few suggestions to help you reduce energy consumption and lower your business’s utility bill. It doesn’t take much to make a big difference and in a years time, that can add up. If you are interested in learning more ways to conserve energy, consider having an energy audit. A Whole Home Surge Protector Will Save You Money

whole home surge protectorA whole home surge protector can save you money. Whether you are worried about protecting your computer, TV or any large appliance, lightening strikes and electrical surges can damage appliances in your home.  It doesn’t take but one bad storm, one downed tree or one lightening strike to cause damage. Here are a few things you can do to protect your family and your electrical appliances.

Invest in a Whole Home Surge Protector

Recently my neighbor’s home was struck by lightening. One of his water pumps was damaged costing him 1300.00 to replace. Over the years I have heard similar stories of homeowners who lost costly electrical equipment because of lightening. Investing in a whole home surge protector could have saved them from the expense of replacing appliances and office equipment.

Most people know that lighting can cause damage to their TV and appliances and yet many of us don’t take the time to unplug our appliances every time a storm comes or every time we leave the house. You can rely on a whole home surge protector to protect your belongings even when you’re away.

Full Protection

Whole home surge protectors will protect you home from up to 40,000 amps or more depending on the size of the protector. Adding this to your electrical panel will protect your home, but you still need individual surge protector outlets and/or power strips. Having both will ensure you are protected from lighting and power surges within your home.

Dedicated Circuits

Having your TV, Computer or other appliances on dedicated circuits can also protect you and your electrical equipment from electrical fluctuations that could cause poor TV quality, or surges when other appliances on the same circuit start running. This can result in fluctuations, surges and the like that can become a problem.

Your Electrician Can Help

If you want to learn more about installing a whole home surge protector or if you are considering adding a few dedicated circuits, your electrician can provide you with information and help with the installations. Call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric  your electrician in Northern Kentucky, for all your electrical needs.

Installing Your Electric Fireplace

installing your electric fireplaceElectric Fireplaces are popular this time of year. There are many good reasons why people choose an electric fireplace insert over a gas or wood-burning fireplace. Here are the pros and cons of choosing an electric fireplace or electric fireplace insert.

Electric Fireplaces are Safe

When it comes to electric fireplaces, you don’t have too much to worry about. Unlike wood burning fireplaces, you don’t have to worry about fires or the smell of smoke. Wood fireplaces are messy and require some work. You have to clean the fireplace and hunt for or buy wood. Gas fireplaces also emit a smell or fumes. They have a flame so fire is possible but their casing allows them to be placed directly next to wood or other burnable materials. Because a leak cannot be detected right away, you need a carbon monoxide detector to be safe if you have a gas fireplace.

Electric fireplaces have no fumes, no flames and don’t emit odors or hazardous gases. They are safe and can be used next to wood and other flammable objects. They are least expensive to install and work well if you have no fireplace chimney or natural gas nearby.

Can Electric Fireplaces Heat Your Room?

Most electric fireplaces are used for their aesthetic appeal. They do produce some heat to help make a room cozy. They operate anywhere from 1500 BTUs to 5000 BTUs on average. Usually a 40,000 BTU gas fireplace can heat an average size living room to give you an example.   On the positive side, the heat can also be turned off if you just want to look at the flames.

Electric Fireplace Cons

Besides looking nice and heating a little, electric fireplaces will cause your electric bill to increase a little. They aren’t really meant to heat a large area. The fire itself looks somewhat real. How real it looks and what the appearance is has a lot to do with the price and quality of the unit you purchase. Some models allow you to adjust the flames too.

Installing Your Electric Fireplace or Electric Fireplace Insert

Installing an Electric fireplace is easy.   Often you just need to plug it into an electrical outlet. You may need to move an outlet to accommodate where you want to place your fireplace.  Electric fireplaces come in all kinds of sizes and styles, including a wall mount.  If you are using an electric fireplace insert, you need to close off your existing chimney and make sure your unit fits properly. You can also construct a casing for your unit.

If you have any questions about installing your electric fireplace or you need help installing an electrical outlet. Call Rose Brothers and Sons electric and we will be happy to help you.

Common Electrical Accidents

electrical accidentsCommon electrical accidents can usually be prevented if you are careful.  Using your appliances and extension cords properly and having good wiring may be all you need to do to prevent an electrical accident. Here are a few things to consider to keep you and your family safe.

Water and Electricity Don’t Mix

Most people know to avoid using electrical appliances around water or while taking a bath.  What you may not know is that every year many electrical accidents occur because of using electricity around water.  All outlets that are in the vicinity of water should have the proper GFCI receptacle.  This includes, your kitchen, bath areas, laundry rooms, garage and pool areas as required by National Electrical codes.  An electrical inspection can reveal if you need to add more of these to areas of your house.

Cords and Plugs

By far the most common electrical accidents that are fatal occur because cords and plugs aren’t used properly.  Extension cords and surge protectors should be used carefully.  Never overload your cords and never use an extension cord for a permanent hook up.  Don’t hide extension cords under carpeting or rugs.  The biggest thing to remember is never use a cord that is damaged by melting or missing insulation.  If the cord or plug looks damaged, replace it or the appliance right away.  It is not worth the risk to use a damaged cord or plug.  Also, make sure you use the right outlet for the plug.  Never force a 3-prong plug into a regular outlet.

Appliances

If you’re using an appliance and you notice a burning smell, see smoke or hear a buzzing sound that is unusual, stop using the appliance until you can have it examined.  Most small appliances just need to be replaced at this point.

Fixtures

Be sure and pay attention to the bulb wattage that is recommended for your fixtures.  Putting a 100 watt bulb into a fixture rated for 40 watts can melt the wiring and cause shocks or fires.  Plugging a plug adapter into your fixture can also be dangerous and can easily overload your fixture.

Household Wiring and Electrical Accidents

When it comes to the safety of your home, you are better off allowing a professional electrician service your electrical system, circuit breakers and wiring.  If you are moving into a new home or have an older home, having an electrical inspection can give you the information you need to protect your family.  You want to make sure the wiring is done correctly and that no circuits are overloaded.  Anytime you detect a potential problem with your electricity it is important to get repairs done right away.  Your electrician in Northern Kentucky will be happy to help.  Call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric today.

Electric Repairs and Tips To Save You Money

electric repairsThere are a few electric repairs and summer time money saving tips that can help lower your electric bill.  August can be one of the hottest months of the year and the average home spends hundreds of dollars a year on energy costs, mostly because of air conditioning.  You can lower your electric bill and help save the environment by following some of these recommendations.  See which of these you can implement and start reaping the rewards of extra savings.

Control Your Thermostat

If your house is like mine, there is a constant war over the thermostat.  My daughter is always hot and likes to keep the air on really high.  My husband is more conservative and follows behind her and turns it back down.  It is suggested that your thermostat should be set to 78 degrees when your home and 80 or more when your away.   You are likely to save up to 3 percent per degree over 72 degrees. Many people are installing new digital thermostats to regulate their homes more.  There are many different ones on the market that can help control your energy use.  Your professional electrician can help with electric repairs and thermostat installations.

Use Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are a great way to keep the air moving in your home.  Many times you can set your thermostat higher and stay comfortable with the use of ceiling fans.  Make sure your fan blades are rotating counter clockwise to push air down and maximize air circulation.  If you need to install more ceiling fans, call your professional electrician and they can help.

Use Appliances Sparingly

Your microwave is the most energy efficient way to cook.  It uses less energy than your stove and it won’t heat up the kitchen.  This will help with your cooling bill.  Your dryer is also a huge consumer of electricity.  You can lower your utility bill by hanging clothes outside on a clothes line.  Peak electricity use hours are from 4pm to 6pm.  Avoid running appliances during this time especially if an electricity emergency is declared. Turn off appliances, lights, power strips and equipment when not in use. Unplug  the spare refrigerator if you have one but don’t really need it.  Freezers that are plugged in but not full will be more costly to run too.  Consider replacing older appliances with newer more energy efficient appliances.

Install a Whole House Fan

If you don’t have an attic fan, consider installing one.  A whole house fan can draw cool air into your home through the windows and suck the hot air up and out through the attic vents.  These are best used in the evening and early morning and can help reduce your air conditioning use.  Your electrician can help you determine if an attic fan would work in your home.

HVAC Maintenance

Having your HVAC system checked and maintained will cause it to work better and more efficient.  You can save energy with clean filters too.  If you have an older a/c unit, you may want to replace it with a newer more energy efficient model.   If you plant trees around your a/c unit, it will use about 5% less energy.   Leaking ductwork needs to be repaired to save around 25% of your energy bill.

Keeping Up With Electrical Repairs

Whenever you notice a problem with your electricity it is important to get it fixed right away.  Repairing things when the problem is first noticed and small, beats waiting and facing larger and more costly repairs later.  Electrical repairs and  electrical upgrades can also help with your energy and utility bills.  Older homes may need electrical repairs to ensure their electric is efficient and economical.  Your electrician can help you determine if there are other ways you can save on your electric bill.  If you have any questions or need electric repairs, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric and they will be happy to help you.
