3 Reasons Your Light Bulbs Could Keep Blowing

Almost all varieties of light bulbs are vulnerable to blowing. This is because they rely on the electrical stimulation of an enclosed gas or filament to produce light. Along with light, heat is also generated. The combination of heat and electricity is enough to cause the bulb to explode. The only type of bulb not susceptible to this issue is LEDs. There are several reasons why this problem can repeatedly occur.

When light bulbs keep blowing, one cause could be a loose connection in the lamp holder. This is due to the fact that the circuit has not been completed as tightly as possible. This can lead to the electricity to jump across the contact or to “arc”, instead of merely flowing through it. When this occurs, more heat is produced than the bulb is expected or tailored to handle. Arcing electricity has the ability to melt the metal it is jumping onto. Once the heat surpasses the limitations of the light bulb, it can blow. A certified electrician can check your lighting circuits to see if there is this is the problem and correct it for you.

Incandescent light bulbs are most prone to exploding. This is because of the high amount of heat that is generated as compared to other types of bulbs. Inside a traditional incandescent bulb is the filament which glows. The glowing occurs as a result of the filament material resisting the flow of electricity. In addition to the radiating effect, the resistance also creates heat. If the bulb manufacturer has failed to correctly insulate the base of the light bulb, the heat produced is enough to melt the socket material. This allows the pressurized inert gases within the bulb to rapidly escape. This is one reason why it is best to avoid cheaper light bulbs. It is best to spend the money on more expensive ones as they are better quality, and you can be assured that they have been manufactured properly. They are also cheaper in the long run as well. The materials in the cheaper bulbs are much thinner, which causes even the slightest surge of power to break them down. To eliminate any chance of risk, it is in your best interest to splurge on the higher priced bulbs.

Another reason for light bulbs to continually blow is an electrical overload of the bulbs internal capacitor, which is a common cause of compact fluorescent bulbs exploding. While CFL bulbs do not produce nearly as much heat as incandescent bulbs, the issue can still happen. The blowing can occur as the result of the CFL being placed on a dimmer circuit. They are not designed to be used with a dimmer so when it is, it will cause an electrical overload.

Wiring Your Outdoor Space to Get Ready for Summer

Summer is not the season to spend time cooped up indoors. You should take advantage of the warm weather by hanging out in your backyard. However if your outdoor space is not living up to its fullest potential, you can transform it into an area you enjoy. This is possible by extending your power outside. Running outdoor wiring will increase your ability to power electrical devices and add more lights.

Don’t let the sun setting stop you from enjoying your backyard. Simply set up additional lights so the darkness is no longer an issue. Layers of lighting are an important design element both inside and outside your home. There are many lighting options, so find the one that fits your needs and sets the atmosphere you are trying to achieve. String lights are always a great choice for any space, and will make your outdoor space feel special. There are even vintage-style string lights that have exposed filaments for even more style. These are a fun and romantic choice to supply extra brightness to the area.  However, if you do not have the outlet space to account for more lights, you will need to fix this issue.

The process of running outdoor wiring will only take a day, and can cost anywhere from $100 to $500. For this project you will run the wires through rigid metal conduit, as this method delivers the most protection and involves the least amount of digging. The first step is locating a power source, and then finding the spot for the new conduit to go into your home. From here you plan the route the wire will take to reach the exit point, and start digging a trench. The conduit will then fit into an LB, which is to be mounted to the siding. The next step is to run the metal conduit to the LB. Remove the cover for the LB and push the fish tape through the conduit. It is then time to pull the wire through. Two wires are required for one circuit, one that is white and another that is black. The wires should run from the switch to the GFCI receptacle, then to the lights or outlets in your backyard. Outdoor wiring is a moderately complex project that requires lots of tools and materials in order to do it. If you have never done electrical work, this is not a good starting project. Your best option is to hire a professional electrician to handle the job for you, and save you time.

For a trusted electrical contractor, Rose Brothers & Sons Electric is there to help. We are available to provide electrical assistance on a wide variety of tasks from small household repairs to large-scale electrical construction projects. No matter the issue, we work hard to solve the root of the problem rather than a symptom of it. How Exterior Outlets Can Transform Your Outdoor Space

You have the ability to turn your backyard into anything you want it to be but you may not have proper access to electricity to achieve it. Whether you wish to hang string lights or hookup your speakers outside, if you do not have enough exterior outlets this can intervene with how you want the area to look and work. Of course, you can use an extension cord running from an interior outlet but this is not really a feasible long-term solution. If your home is in need of additional power outlets, the installation process is not very difficult and you can actually do it yourself. When you have the sufficient level of power you can turn your outdoor living space into a place where you enjoy spending time with whatever devices, machines, or hobbies you want. The fastest method to extend power is to install a receptacle back-to-back with an already existing one inside your home.

First, you must find a location that corresponds to an interior wall outlet. Then it is time to turn the power off to the receptacle circuit by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker in the service panel. To ensure that the power is off, you can use a non-contact voltage tester on every part of the outlet. You can insert the device into all of the slots as well as checking the wires and outlet terminals after the cover plate is removed. Next, you need to pull the outlet from the electrical box by loosening the mounting strap screws.  Separate the circuit wires from the outlet and push the wires to the side so they are not in the way. You then will have to remove a knockout from the box in order to uncover the outer wall. Drill a hole in the wall through to the exterior side. From the outside, you can enlarge the hole to give yourself more space for the new wiring. Now it is time to install a circuit cable through the hole. Use a push-in cable clamp to secure the cable. You will need three wires to act as pigtails to attach the circuit wires to the indoor receptacle. Once everything is connected, tuck the wires into the indoor electrical box. You can now connect the outdoor box.  It is now time to install the GFCI outlet. After everything is finished, you can restore the power and use the voltage tester on both outlets.

Before attempting anything, you will need to check with local codes for the approved conduit, cable, and boxes. It is also important to make sure that the new service will not overload the circuit. The entire process should take two hours. If you find this too time consuming or are afraid to try this yourself, you can always hire a professional to do the job.

Why Should You Invest in LED Bulbs?

Light-emitting diode bulbs are a marvelous lighting choice due to their energy saving capabilities. Compared to incandescent lightbulbs, ENERGY STAR bulbs consume 75% less energy and have a lifespan that is up to 25 times longer. They can last up to 25,000 hours; this can equate to thirteen years of use if the light is left on for five hours every day. Meanwhile incandescent bulbs only last 1,200 hours and compact fluorescents just have a lifespan of 8,000 hours. An investment in LED bulbs is money spent towards fewer lightbulb changes. You will ultimately have to spend less time going to the store to buy replacements and changing any burnt out bulbs. The U.S. government has passed laws to utilize only energy efficient lightbulbs by 2020, so it may be required to switch in the near future.

When they first LED bulbs entered the market, they carried a high sticker price but that is no longer the case. Now they are quite affordable and can be found for just five dollars each. As a bonus, power companies offer rebates for them as well. Incandescent bulbs on the other hand are only one dollar each. However, LED bulbs can provide a monthly savings of $1.25 per each bulb. So while the types of bulbs have different price points, the cost to invest in LEDs can be recouped in about three months. If you are turned off by the high initial cost, just know that they will eventually pay for themselves. Most American homes utilize forty lightbulbs, which would make the average rate of electricity for LEDs per kilowatt hour is 13 cents. If all forty lightbulbs were left on for five hours each day, the switch from incandescent to LEDs would save the homeowner $600 a year.

LED lighting has made many improvements since it was first released, and is offered in many different products. Switching to LED holiday lights for your winter holiday decorating is a smart choice for a variety of reasons. They are a safer option compared to incandescent decorative string lights. This is because LEDs operate at a cooler temperature, so the chances of burned fingers or combustion is reduced. They are also sturdier as they are crafted with epoxy lens instead of glass, making them more impervious to breakage than traditional bulbs. Another benefit is that a string of LEDs has the potential to last for up to 40 consecutive holiday seasons. Up to 25 string lights can be hooked-up together and they will not overload the wall socket. However, the most noticeable change will be felt by your wallet. The estimated cost of purchasing and using the LED C-9 string lights and LED mini-lights for ten seasons is $17.99 and $33.29, respectively. Meanwhile in the same scenario, the cost for incandescent C-9 lights is $122.19 and for incandescent mini-lights the cost is $55.62.

Installing Recessed Lighting in Your Home

A solution to remedy the unflattering lighting in your home is to switch to recessed lighting. Also known as can lights or downlights, the fixtures appear level with the ceiling which makes them suitable for spaces with low ceilings. This option is a versatile source of light that can also add to the ambiance of rooms as well. It also works well with other types of lights, such as table lamps, sconces, and candles, so you can create a well-balanced and inviting environment. However, before you install recessed lighting, you must first find the type right for you.

The housing is the light fixture itself, and holds the light bulb and trim in place. There are several types offered. New construction housing is used for homes being built or new additions to existing houses, and is put in place before the installation of the ceiling occurs. Remodel housing is designed to be installed in an existing ceiling. For lighting fixtures that will be in direct contact with insulation, there is insulation-contact rated housing. If the lighting has an attic or unconditioned space above with a conditioned room situated below, selecting airtight housing will reduce airflow as well as prevent heating and cooling energy waste. Slope ceiling housing creates enough space for the light to be angled in a sloped ceiling.

The trim is what is visible when you see the fixture; there are numerous styles to select from. The most common one is baffle trim which features a ribbed interior to minimize glare. Reflector trim has a mirrored surface to amplify the illumination given.  Another option is open trim which is flush or very close to flush with the ceiling and delivers unobstructed illumination. If you wish to use can lights to highlight a specific feature or wash the walls with light, eyeball trim is the perfect choice as you can choose the direction the light travels. For wet or humid locations there is shower trim. This style uses a tempered glass lens suitable to be installed in restrooms and over showers.

Another factor to consider is the light bulb you wish to use. Some downlight fixtures can take LED, halogen, incandescent, or fluorescent bulbs. But there are certain styles that can only use select light bulbs, typically halogen or fluorescent. The lightbulb you choose can help enhance the atmosphere you are trying to portray, as each can give off different colors. If you want to have dimmable lights, you should use fixtures reliant on LED, incandescent, or halogen light bulbs. This is due to the fact that fluorescent light bulbs cannot be dimmed unless they have dimmable ballast.

If you want recessed lighting installed in your home, rely on the professional electricians at Rose Brothers & Sons Electric to do the job for you. What Are Low Frequency Electrical Hums?

A low frequency electrical hum can make it hard to relax in your own home. You are stuck hearing a noise that seems to come from out of nowhere, and is difficult to pinpoint. The problem can drive you crazy if you are stuck dealing with it for too long. Buzzing and humming are a quite common phenomenon and can occur for numerous reasons.

Low frequency electrical hums can be caused by a number of issues. Lots of fluorescent light fixtures are known to make a humming noise, so to eliminate the sound you would have to switch to a different type of fixture. Lightbulbs that are cheaper or on a dimmer can be the source of the disturbance. To resolve the problem, upgrade to an LED bulb and see if things quiet down.

Older electric or gas meters rely on several moving parts to function, so it is easily possible that they may emit a noise loud enough to hear in your home. If this is the reason, speak with your utility provider to inquire about upgrading your meter or getting a replacement. Fortunately newer meters are digital so they very rarely create a hum.

A general term to describe the audible sound from an alternating current is “mains hum.” Electrical transformers on the exterior of your home and appliances powered by electric motors, including refrigerators and dryers, are known sources of mains hum. This sound is completely harmless and happens normally; however, it can be a bad sign if the hum escalates to a loud buzzing.

Electrical elements like outlets and wiring can hum for various reasons, most of which can indicate a dangerous issue. An improperly grounded outlet or wiring that transfers voltage at a level that exceeds its rating can be the culprit and overtime can spark a fire.

If circuit breakers are defective or failing, they may not function properly. Instead of tripping when a circuit has too much voltage, it can leave the circuit in an overloaded state. This can cause the breaker box to produce a noise.

The annoyance of low frequency electrical hum has led to several techniques to be developed to help locate the source. You can roll up a piece of paper into a horn shape to hold up to your ear. You should then stand in the middle of the room, and see which direction has the loudest sound. If this doesn’t pinpoint the source, you can rely on a metal soundhead stethoscope. The stethoscope should never make contact with electricity, so this option can only help you see if nonelectrical components are the problem.

If you are suffering with a low frequency electrical hum, contact a professional electrician to find and correct the problem. At Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, we are a trusted family owned electrical contractor and here to help you. We prioritize the safety of our customers which is why we always solve the root of the issue right away. We are located in Walton, KY to provide service to Northern KY and Cincinnati. Can Turning Off Your Lights Really Save You Money?

The cost of turning off a single lightbulb does not amount to noteworthy savings. However, the cost when looking at the total number of bulbs in your home is more substantial. On average American homes have 40 lightbulbs, and the energy to power those accounts for 20% of the average electric bill. When ten incandescent bulbs are left on for an hour each day, the resulting cost is $24 each year. The expense for having ten halogens left running an hour daily is $17 annually. It is $6 annually to leave ten compact fluorescents running for a single hour every day. Leaving ten LEDs on for an hour daily equates to a net cost of $5 a year. These figures when multiplied show how much it truly costs to light your home, and the savings from turning the lights off when you leave the room.

When turning off your lights you may be saving energy, but the cost effectiveness of this is dependent on the type of light bulb used. Each style of bulb differs due to their individual rated operating life, which is impacted by the number of times the light is turned off and on. With every additional flipping of the switch, the functioning lifespan of the bulb is shortened. The Department of Energy compared the electricity usage and expenses of four 60-watt equivalent bulbs. A single Incandescent bulb employs 0.06 kWh of electricity in an hour. Each one consumes roughly $6.60 in electricity in a year. This number is calculated by the cost per kilowatt hour of $0.11 for one thousand hours of operation. This is the least efficient method of lighting, so these bulbs should be turned off whenever possible. A 43-watt halogen lightbulb is able to save 25% more energy than an incandescent. In 1,000 hours of usage, the cost of one bulb is typically $4.73. Replacing an incandescent bulb with a single 15-watt compact fluorescent will cause 75% less energy to be used. The compact fluorescent has an operational cost of $1.65 per 1,000 hours. An LED bulb provides 80% higher efficiency over incandescent lightbulbs. The cost to use a 12-watt LED for 1,000 hours is only $1.32. If you are interested in saving energy and money, consider switching to more energy efficient lighting options.

If you are looking for easier ways to deal with your lights, you may want to upgrade to dimmers, timers, or motion detectors. Dimmers are an affordable option to decrease the amount of wattage and output for your lighting. Timers can be programmed to align with your daily needs. Another option is motion detectors which use heat waves to detect when someone is in the room, and shuts lights off when there is no movement present. These are great solutions to reducing your lighting usage and ultimately saving energy.

Keeping Your Outdoor Outlets Safe

Outdoor outlets are exposed to many situations that can be damaging. If an outlet is not in working condition, this can lead to potentially dangerous repercussions for your household. Here are some tips to keep your outdoor outlets free from harm.

It is important to only use outdoor-rated electrical elements. Anything you plan to use outside must be specially designed and built to withstand the weather. Even if the outdoor lighting fixture is under a roof and will not be exposed to any rain, it still must be able to endure dampness, and extreme temperatures. Higher ratings are available for components that are not shielded from precipitation; it will state that they are weather resistant, weatherproof, or suitable for wet settings. You must use outdoor-rated light bulbs, fixtures, extension cords, and decorative lights. Indoor extension cords cannot meet the capacity required by many power tools, lawn tools, and outdoor lighting.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, or GFCI, outlets are a critical electrical safety improvement in the last few decades. They should be used anywhere you plug in electronics while grounded, including outside. Weather-resistant GFCI will ensure that your family is not shocked in outdoor environments with moisture present. If the previous owners of your home did not switch the outdoor outlets to GFCI, it is imperative for safety to update them as quickly as possible. These receptacles feature components resistant to corrosion, meaning not only are they safer but they will last longer than indoor options available.

You can install covers to be placed over your outlets so they are not affected by the climate. For receptacles that on porches or in an area with a roof, a cover that is labeled as “Suitable For Damp Locations”, is the right choice. However, for outdoor outlets that do not have protective shelter, they require an in-use cover instead. This style allows both the receptacle and whatever is plugged in it to remain dry, even during rain.

Ensure that wires and extension cords are in proper working order before use. You should inspect them for nicks, cuts, tangles, or any signs of injury. You need to be careful when placing wires along walkways and trees, as this can make them more susceptible to destruction. Avoid the use of these components in locations where the wires can be impaired. Any damage sustained can cause potential problems to arise.

When plugging in something, you should pay attention to the capacity needed. If not, you could overload the extension cord or outlet which may lead to a fire. Consider installing an extra outlet or purchasing a higher-capacity cord for your gadgets.

LED

While lighting and light bulbs are usually low on your to do list, they rank very high on the list for great design techniques. Since every room in your home needs lighting to function properly, you should only want the highest quality light bulbs. There is a wide variety of different light bulbs out there, including compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), incandescent light bulbs, Halogen light bulbs, and the ever-popular light emitting diode light bulbs (LED). You work hard for the things you have, so why not make them work for you? When you choose non-LED bulbs, rather than saving money on your electric bill, they can actually cause it to be higher. Plus, you have to replace them fairly often. Along with LED lights being environmentally friendly, they are also pocket friendly. The upfront cost of LED bulbs may be a little more, but the long-term savings are definitely worth a few extra bucks now.

Do you have random lights in your home that are different colors? That does not means that you have one room that is vibrant green and another room purple, but different hues of yellow. The difference in colors can be distracting to the eye, especially if it’s happening in one room where one side of your room is a warm yellow and the other side is a more of a lighter yellow. With LED lights, you can choose to have a specific light color. That way, you can have the mood set for your room without having to use dimmers. A cooler blue light is one of the more popular choices.

You don’t only have to place LED lights inside of your home. You can and should also place them in highly used areas outside of your home. If you are like most people, you probably forget to turn your front porch and garage light off when you leave for work in the morning. Wouldn’t you feel better knowing that you are still saving 85% more energy when you use LED light bulbs? Start spending less time buying and changing incandescent light bulbs and start saving time and money with LED light bulbs.
