Can Turning Off Your Lights Really Save You Money?

The cost of turning off a single lightbulb does not amount to noteworthy savings. However, the cost when looking at the total number of bulbs in your home is more substantial. On average American homes have 40 lightbulbs, and the energy to power those accounts for 20% of the average electric bill. When ten incandescent bulbs are left on for an hour each day, the resulting cost is $24 each year. The expense for having ten halogens left running an hour daily is $17 annually. It is $6 annually to leave ten compact fluorescents running for a single hour every day. Leaving ten LEDs on for an hour daily equates to a net cost of $5 a year. These figures when multiplied show how much it truly costs to light your home, and the savings from turning the lights off when you leave the room.

When turning off your lights you may be saving energy, but the cost effectiveness of this is dependent on the type of light bulb used. Each style of bulb differs due to their individual rated operating life, which is impacted by the number of times the light is turned off and on. With every additional flipping of the switch, the functioning lifespan of the bulb is shortened. The Department of Energy compared the electricity usage and expenses of four 60-watt equivalent bulbs. A single Incandescent bulb employs 0.06 kWh of electricity in an hour. Each one consumes roughly $6.60 in electricity in a year. This number is calculated by the cost per kilowatt hour of $0.11 for one thousand hours of operation. This is the least efficient method of lighting, so these bulbs should be turned off whenever possible. A 43-watt halogen lightbulb is able to save 25% more energy than an incandescent. In 1,000 hours of usage, the cost of one bulb is typically $4.73. Replacing an incandescent bulb with a single 15-watt compact fluorescent will cause 75% less energy to be used. The compact fluorescent has an operational cost of $1.65 per 1,000 hours. An LED bulb provides 80% higher efficiency over incandescent lightbulbs. The cost to use a 12-watt LED for 1,000 hours is only $1.32. If you are interested in saving energy and money, consider switching to more energy efficient lighting options.

If you are looking for easier ways to deal with your lights, you may want to upgrade to dimmers, timers, or motion detectors. Dimmers are an affordable option to decrease the amount of wattage and output for your lighting. Timers can be programmed to align with your daily needs. Another option is motion detectors which use heat waves to detect when someone is in the room, and shuts lights off when there is no movement present. These are great solutions to reducing your lighting usage and ultimately saving energy.

Keeping Your Outdoor Outlets Safe

Outdoor outlets are exposed to many situations that can be damaging. If an outlet is not in working condition, this can lead to potentially dangerous repercussions for your household. Here are some tips to keep your outdoor outlets free from harm.

It is important to only use outdoor-rated electrical elements. Anything you plan to use outside must be specially designed and built to withstand the weather. Even if the outdoor lighting fixture is under a roof and will not be exposed to any rain, it still must be able to endure dampness, and extreme temperatures. Higher ratings are available for components that are not shielded from precipitation; it will state that they are weather resistant, weatherproof, or suitable for wet settings. You must use outdoor-rated light bulbs, fixtures, extension cords, and decorative lights. Indoor extension cords cannot meet the capacity required by many power tools, lawn tools, and outdoor lighting.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, or GFCI, outlets are a critical electrical safety improvement in the last few decades. They should be used anywhere you plug in electronics while grounded, including outside. Weather-resistant GFCI will ensure that your family is not shocked in outdoor environments with moisture present. If the previous owners of your home did not switch the outdoor outlets to GFCI, it is imperative for safety to update them as quickly as possible. These receptacles feature components resistant to corrosion, meaning not only are they safer but they will last longer than indoor options available.

You can install covers to be placed over your outlets so they are not affected by the climate. For receptacles that on porches or in an area with a roof, a cover that is labeled as “Suitable For Damp Locations”, is the right choice. However, for outdoor outlets that do not have protective shelter, they require an in-use cover instead. This style allows both the receptacle and whatever is plugged in it to remain dry, even during rain.

Ensure that wires and extension cords are in proper working order before use. You should inspect them for nicks, cuts, tangles, or any signs of injury. You need to be careful when placing wires along walkways and trees, as this can make them more susceptible to destruction. Avoid the use of these components in locations where the wires can be impaired. Any damage sustained can cause potential problems to arise.

When plugging in something, you should pay attention to the capacity needed. If not, you could overload the extension cord or outlet which may lead to a fire. Consider installing an extra outlet or purchasing a higher-capacity cord for your gadgets.

The Ins and Outs of Outdoor Accent Lighting

First impressions are everything! This goes for meeting new people, when you test drive a car and of course when you pull up to someone’s home for the first time. But don’t forget about your home. If your grass is uncut and your siding is peeling, people might jump to unfortunate conclusions. Just like keeping up with the maintenance of your home, adding simple design touches makes your home look even better! Here at Rose Brothers & Sons Inc Electric and Construction, we can help you achieve the look you desire with accent lighting. We specialize in residential, commercial, and industrial electric construction, so no matter if you need service on your home or office, we have the right tools and professionals to make the job fast and efficient. We have been servicing Northern KY and Cincinnati for decades and would love to have the opportunity to serve you and your family as well.

Your home’s curb appeal can be affected by the things you choose to do and not do to the exterior of your home and lawn. Adding additional accent lighting is a great idea and can have a major impact on your home, but where should you place your new lighting? Well since the way to get to your home is to drive up your driveway, we should start there. You can purchase a variety of styles of accent lighting for your driveway. You can choose to have solar LED lights in the form of in-ground or above-ground posts. The best thing about lighting up your driveway with solar lights is that it won’t reflect on your energy bill.

Flowers and gardens also play a big role in curb appeal. If you have a beautiful flower bed, why should it be hidden in the dark? Adding accent lighting to your flower bed will highlight nature’s beauty throughout the night and late evenings.

Homes always come with porch and garage lighting. But if you want your home to stand out in a good way, adding down lighting, up lighting, or cross lighting to the exterior can be the solution. Each lighting position brings a different effect to your home and landscape, so no matter if you want a dramatic or romantic feel, our installation crew can achieve it.

With our history of experience and professionalism, we can provide you and your family services from pool lighting to circuits in newly built homes and everything else in-between. Rose Brothers & Sons Inc. Electrical and Construction is located in Walton, KY and built on hard work and ethic, and we proudly serve all of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. Thinking of Switching to LED Bulbs? We Can Help!

LED

While lighting and light bulbs are usually low on your to do list, they rank very high on the list for great design techniques. Since every room in your home needs lighting to function properly, you should only want the highest quality light bulbs. There is a wide variety of different light bulbs out there, including compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), incandescent light bulbs, Halogen light bulbs, and the ever-popular light emitting diode light bulbs (LED). Have you ever wondered how LED light bulbs became so popular? People that wanted to move away from generic bulbs did their research and found out that they are all around better for their home. They found that LED bulbs could also save them money, and good news travels fast! Our trusted electricians at Rose Brothers & Son’s Inc Electric and Construction , located in Walton, KY, know all the ins and outs about anything dealing with electricity, and it would be our pleasure to pass on our knowledge to you!

You work hard for the things you have, so why not make them work for you? When you choose non-LED bulbs, rather than saving money on your electric bill, they can actually cause it to be higher. Plus, you have to replace them fairly often. Along with LED lights being environmentally friendly, they are also pocket friendly. The upfront cost of LED bulbs may be a little more, but the long-term savings are definitely worth a few extra bucks now.

Do you have random lights in your home that are different colors? That does not means that you have one room that is vibrant green and another room purple, but different hues of yellow. The difference in colors can be distracting to the eye, especially if it’s happening in one room where one side of your room is a warm yellow and the other side is a more of a lighter yellow. With LED lights, you can choose to have a specific light color. That way, you can have the mood set for your room without having to use dimmers. A cooler blue light is one of the more popular choices.

You don’t only have to place LED lights inside of your home. You can and should also place them in highly used areas outside of your home. If you are like most people, you probably forget to turn your front porch and garage light off when you leave for work in the morning. Wouldn’t you feel better knowing that you are still saving 85% more energy when you use LED light bulbs? Start spending less time buying and changing incandescent light bulbs and start saving time and money with LED light bulbs.

At Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, we have the knowledge and expertise to help you with all of your electrical needs, from knowledge about changing your light bulbs all the way up to rewiring your entire house. When it comes to your kitchen, your lighting choices are important for the overall feel and look of your space. The right lighting can completely transform a room and in the kitchen, a room that is used during all times of the day, the right lighting fixtures are even more important. Many trends like pendant lighting, natural materials, blown glass, LED, warm metal, and glitz vintage have stuck around for the upcoming year and could all be great additions to your kitchen décor.

Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting allows for even more light in your kitchen. Mount these interesting light fixtures above your island however you like. Vary their heights and the sizes of the actual pendant to liven up the look. Pendant lighting will give you concentrated lighting over one area, so it is best to incorporate these lights with over lighting in your kitchen.

Natural Materials

Natural materials are a big trend in every area of the home this year. Consider wood, bamboo, linen, or burlap light fixtures to bring a touch of natural beauty into your space. Not only will this natural element be on trend, it will make your kitchen feel warmer if your kitchen preferences tend to be more modern. These natural elements will make guests feel more welcome and make for a beautiful design contrast that is not too overwhelming.

LED Kitchen Lights

LED lights are kitchen lighting trends that are going to be around for a long time. Getting Back to Brass and Vintage Glass

You know you have that favorite shirt sitting in the back of your closet that you can never bring yourself to get rid of. As you know, everything eventually comes back into style. Well, most everything. According to Progress Lighting, vintage and rustic fixtures from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s are making a comeback. Vintage glass and brass accents made a bold statement during that era and they’re still trendy today.

Pendant Lighting

This lighting trend makes a statement that combines tradition and nuance. You can personalize pendant lighting to make it unique to your own home. Mix and match different styles of these light fixtures to make it your own. According to New Home Source, you can combine a couple of pendant light fixtures at various heights to make a fun and unique chandelier of your own.

Oversized Fixtures

Make a dramatic and bold statement in your new home by adding an oversized light fixture to your home. Oversized fixtures are a bold focal point for homes with large foyers or high ceilings. These trendy fixtures give your home some modern flair rather than opting for the classic and traditional glass chandelier.

Nautical Twists

According to Progress Lighting, navy is the top color trend for 2016. Compliment this beautiful color with a lighting fixture that adds a nautical twist to your home. Beveled or seeded glass light fixtures create that nautical feel in your home that you’re looking for. These nautical elements will make you feel like the shore is right outside your window.

We hope that these 2016 lighting trends will help you add some modern flair to your new home. At Rose Brothers & Sons we want to be your first call when installing your new light fixtures. We are electricians and electrical contractors serving Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati and the surrounding areas.

6 Outdoor Lighting Ideas for Nighttime Curb Appeal

Nighttime curb appealAs we move into fall and winter our days become shorter, which means our homes will be viewed more in the dark than in the daylight. Here are six outdoor lighting ideas to keep your nighttime curb appeal going strong long after the sun goes down.

Add Some Nighttime Curb Appeal

Outdoor lighting ideas

Indirect Lighting – Indirect lighting generally consists of placing lights near a home or trees. Uplighting is a very common type of indirect lighting, where a light is placed at the base of a tree or near a home’s foundation and is pointed upward.

Path Lighting – Path lighting not only increases your curb appeal, it also keeps people walking on a walkway or sidewalk safe. But don’t settle for a bunch of boring plastic solar lights un-inspiringly lining your path. Consider using different styles of complementary lights to add interest. And place them throughout a landscape bed bordering the path where they can accent an interesting plant or shrub. Just be sure they are close enough to provide lighting for safe walking.

Hardscape Lighting – Trees and plants aren’t the only things on your property besides your house that you can illuminate. Rope lights can be attached to stone or wood fences for a strip of light, or individual lights can be installed on the underside of porch railings. While it may not technically add to the curb appeal because these features are behind your house, other hardscapes that can be lit are gazebos, outdoor grilling areas, and fireplaces.

Moon Lighting – This unusual name has been given to lighting that is installed high up and shines down like moonlight. It is often put in trees so that the light is softened as it filters through the leaves.

Water Feature Lighting – Water features don’t have to only be enjoyed during the day, they can shine at night too with the proper lighting. Uplighting on a fountain can have a dramatic effect and lighting a landscape pond can let your evening visitors both enjoy it and prevent falling into it. The majority of pools come equipped with a pool light for nighttime swimming, but a lit-up pool is also beautiful to just sit next to on a nice evening or even enjoy through a window from inside. With the properly located lighting, a small waterfall can be breathtaking.

Combination Lighting – Don’t feel like you need to pick just one type of outdoor lighting for your home. Some of the most stunning looks can be achieved by using multiple types of lights. Just be sure your lights aren’t going to keep your neighbors up at night because they are aimed at their house, or that a small plane will want to land it your yard because it’s lit up like a landing strip. Keep it understated and tasteful.

Now that these landscape lighting ideas have convinced you to shed some light on your home, what’s the next step? Call a Northern Kentucky licensed electrician at Rose Brothers Electric to improve your nighttime curb appeal today.

5 Tips For Choosing Lights

greater cincinnati Electrical contractorRose Brothers and Sons Electric offer these 5 tips for choosing lights for your home. As Greater Cincinnati electrical contractors, we are often asked to install lighting in new homes. Here are a few ideas to help you make the most out of your indoor and outdoor lights

1.What Are Your Goals

When you begin choosing the lights for your new home, remember that most rooms require more than one type of lighting. Task lights, overhead lights and aesthetic lights are all important. Consider your kitchen for example. You’ll need a good overhead light for most activities and a few task lights to help you see. Lights are often added at the stove area, around the sink where you do dishes and under cabinets where you may need more direct light.   Choosing the right lighting for each individual room will create the right ambience in each room and give you the task lighting that makes you comfortable.

2. Choosing Lights For Safety and Security

Whether you are discussing indoor lights or outdoor lights, choosing lights to help you keep from falling or lights to deter intruders, should be one of your top priorities.  Outdoors lighting should include lights along the walkways and at the entryways.  This allows you ample light keep from tripping and to find your keys so you can get inside your home quickly.  Lights on steps inside and out will help keep you from tripping and missing a step.  Motion sensor lights work well in areas where you need lights for brief moments when you’re passing by.  You should also install motion sensor lights around your house to keep intruders at bay.  When it comes to adding lights to the outside of your home, you want to make sure the lighting isn’t so bright it will keep you or your neighbors up at night.

3. Choosing Lights For Aesthetics

Outdoors lighting can really add charm to your home at night.  light sconces can be added either pointing down or up to give your home some character at night.  Lights can also turn architectural aspects of your home into wonderful focal points.  When you think about adding lights for looks to your home, take a tour of your neighborhood and see if you find any homes that light up nicely.  Often neighborhoods are unique in the way they use outdoor lighting.

Indoor lighting is just as important when it comes to adding to your decor and design style.  This is especially true when you consider hanging lights or chandeliers.  Make sure the lighting you choose doesn’t outdate your home but instead, matches the decor and design of your home.  If you have high ceilings, adding lights towards the ceiling can really add a nice touch.  Recessed lighting is often all you need.  You can choose recessed lighting that is stationary or that is directional based on your needs.

4.  Choosing Lights For Ambience

Lights have a way of setting the tone for each room they are in.  Choose your lights well and make sure you choose the correct size light bulb for each lamb or light fixture.  Not only the size but the wattage is important.  The correct wattage is necessary to keep you safe from fires and melting fixtures.  Also choosing the wattage to add the right ambience is important.  A light that is too bright will make you feel uncomfortable.  Likewise, a low light that might be perfect in a bedroom would be hard to live with in other areas of the home.  Lighting can create a comfort that adds to your home and makes your rooms more inviting.

Rose Brothers and Sons Electric can help you choose lights for your home.  If you need help picking out fixtures or determining where to place your lights, call the lighting experts at Rose Brothers and Sons Electric.  We can help you install all the lighting you’ll need.

How To Find The Right Indoor Lighting

how to find the right indoor lightingWe can show you how to find the right indoor lighting to create the ambiance you want and the light you need.  When you think about remodeling your home and installing light fixtures, you have a few things to consider. Here are a few questions that you need to answer before you look at installing indoor lighting.  How will adding lights affect the colors in the room?  What is the room used for and what Working Lights Do I Need? Will the fixtures be visible and match the decor?   As the top concerns when considering how to find the right indoor lighting, we’ll discuss them here.

How Will Adding Lights Affect The Colors In The Room?

Lighting has a lot to do with the colors you see.  You can look at a color in direct sunlight and see an entirely different color than under a florescent light.  Different lighting does affect the colors you see.  If you love the color in your living room for example, you might not want to change the lighting from incandescent to florescent.  It could in fact change the entire look of the colors in your room.  Make sure when you are choosing the indoor lights that you take into consideration the overall look of your bulbs and the brightness or dimness in respect to colors in the room.  When it comes to adding ambiance to a room, the indoor lighting has a huge affect and can really make or break the mood in the room.

What Is The Room Used For and What Working Lights Do I Need?

Think about the room you are remodeling and the type of lights you need to work in the room.  Kitchens often need not only good overhead lighting but task lights under cabinets.  A living room might need a variety of lighting.  Some to illuminate the entire room during a get together and others to light up a corner for early morning reading.  What about the basement or garage?  Maybe a large florescent fixture would light up your work area.  As you can see considering what the room is used for will lead you to the right type of indoor lighting.

Will The Fixtures Be Visible And Match The Decor?

This is really important when you consider how to find the right indoor lighting.  Many lamps, chandeliers and other light fixtures are created to match your decor.  Today’s trend is toward large lights and fixtures so match your existing decor or theme is extremely important when you’re installing indoor lights.  If the lights will be out of sight, you have more room to wiggle.  Don’t forget lights that you don’t really think about being decorative such as recessed lighting do allow you some room to choose colors and materials that are visible.

How To Find The Right Indoor Lighting

Rose Brothers & Son Electric are your local electricians in Northern Kentucky.  We can help you create the right indoor lighting solutions that will enable you to enjoy your home and use your rooms the way you need to.  If you need indoor lights installed, we can help you with any electrical wiring or upgrades.  Call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric today.
