Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

electric vehicle charging stationElectrical Vehicle Charging Stations (EV Charging stations) are becoming more and more popular as more and more people are buying hybrid cars.  The decision to use a standard 110-v outlet to charge your car or a dedicated 240-v circuit is a decision each electric car owner must make.  It won’t be long however until an electrical vehicle charging station is standard on all new homes.  This has already been written into legislation in some cities.

Charging Your Electric Car At Home

Most hybrid cars come with a standard plug to use at home on your 110-v outlet.  Before you begin charging your car it is a good idea to have a professional electrician inspect your home to make sure charging your electric car won’t overload your existing household circuits.  This is especially true if the circuit where you park your car also supplies lights and other appliances with electricity.  You may need a dedicated circuit breaker or an upgrade to your existing circuit breaker panel to charge your car.

If you have a small battery or don’t drive too much, this charging method will work well.   You can usually charge your car in a small amount of time (anywhere from 20 min to 3 hours).  If however, you have a larger battery or drive a lot, you will find this method takes a long time (up to 25 hours on some models).  You can reduce your time by up to 60% in most cases by purchasing and installing a level 2 Electrical Charging Station or dock.  For example, if your car fully charges in 11 hours on a 110-v circuit, then it will charge in 3 hours on a 240-v circuit.

Installing an Electric Vehicle Charging Station

It is important that you hire a professional electrician to install your EV charging station.  It requires a dedicated 240-v circuit similar to what air conditioners or clothes dryers use.  Your electrician is the most qualified to work on your circuit breaker and provide you with the safest repairs and upgrades available.  In some cases this may involve pulling a permit and following other regulations.

If you have any questions about charging your electric car at home, please call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric and we will be happy to help you.

Self-sufficient Homes and Electricity

self-sufficient homesSelf-sufficient energy and electricity has been an interesting topic for years.  Back in the 1970’s people began to focus on energy consumption and conservation.  Many studies show that American is one of the leading users of our natural resources, but did you know that America this year was 84.5% self-sufficient energy-wise?

America’s  Goal, 100% Self-sufficient Energy

It has always been our dream as a country to be self-sufficient as far as energy was concerned.  Thanks to new technologies such as, drilling and extraction methods (hydraulic fraction and horizontal drilling) we are now more than ever close to reaching our goals.    It is estimated that by the year 2020 we will, in fact, be energy efficient.

Conserving energy with Self-sufficient buildings

Besides creating our own energy, a move toward conservation and self-sufficiency is emerging across the US.  Some people are worrying about the collapse of the grid and being self-sustaining because of electrical failure.  Other people are conserving natural resources and saving money by living off the land.

The International Energy Agency recognizes that buildings are one of the most cost-effective sectors for reducing energy use.  40% of our primary energy consumption is in our buildings and homes.  This is also where a significant source of CO2 emissions is created.  With the use of better forms of energy such as photovoltaic energy, wind turbines, geo-thermal systems and hydro turbines some are able to produce enough electricity to provide for their own needs and, also feed energy back into the grid.

How You Can Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Self-sufficient homes or autonomous homes are built with green living in mind.  By studying these homes and how they save electricity, we can learn some things we can do ourselves that will help with our energy consumption.

Unless you are starting from scratch or have lots of money to invest in solar energy or geothermal energy, you probably will find yourself doing a few things with what you have.  One of the big assets or disadvantage a house can have are it’s windows.  Self-sufficient houses are insulated well and the windows and doors are completely sealed.  You can consider replacing windows that leak.  Also you can use the location of your windows to your advantage.  They can provide sunlight for lights and sun for heat in the winter.  In the summer you can use awnings to try and reverse the effect.  Window treatments can also help with energy efficiency at your windows.

Led lights offer another way to use less energy.  They also put off heat which can help during the winter.  Led light systems can be purchased too that are powered by solar, hydro or wind.

Water is another area where we can easily conserve.  Many people today are using rain barrels to water their lawns or gardens.  You can easily use solar water heaters for your roof to heat your water without using as much electricity.  Some of these systems can be quite expensive.

Other people in an attempt to use less electricity will hang their clothes out to dry on the line.  At one time this was considered normal and everyone hung their clothes outside, then it was only people who had no dryer and it was considered for the poor. Today, we see the tide reversing as people are beginning to once again use their clothes line out of choice to conserve and be more self-sufficient.

Some of the ways to conserve electricity are just common sense.  Upgrading your windows or appliances are all good ideas.  Other ideas are more a choice and a way of life.  You can expect as we keep exploring new energy sources and ways to use that energy that people will become more energy efficient and homes and building will be built with energy and electricity offered in more self-sufficient ways.

To see how you can better use your electricity, call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric today.

AC Units Can Cause Electrical Problems

electrical problemsThis is the time of year an electrician will start getting calls for electrical problems connected to Air Conditioning.  AC Units will start tripping circuit breakers, dimming lights and sometimes causing partial power outages.

Why Your AC Unit Causes Your Electric to Go Haywire

There are a few common reasons why AC Units can cause problems with your existing electrical wiring or cause your circuit breakers to trip.  It could be that your home is underpowered and doesn’t have enough electricity to handle the AC Unit and all it’s other electrical needs.  Another reason is that your AC Unit may be connected to an overloaded circuit.   Faulty breakers or loose connections inside or outside the circuit breaker panel are also common reasons why your AC Unit may be causing problems.

When To Call Your Electrician For Electrical Problems

Anytime you have problems with your electric is a good time to call your electrician. It takes a skilled technician to fix electricity and to follow the rules and codes of electrical wiring.   If you notice problems with your electricity when you turn your AC Unit on, it’s time to call your electrician for some electrical repair.

Your electrician will be able to tell you a few solutions to the problem you’re having and what you can do about it.  Sometimes circuit breakers are obsolete or need to be overhauled.  If your home is underpowered or your circuit breaker is overloaded, your electrician can give you options to fix your electrical problems.

Things You Can Do to Be Energy Efficient

Use ceiling fans to help cool your house.  They will keep the air circulating and keep you cool.  Turn off the lights when you’re not using them or if you can use sunlight.  This will reduce your electric use and help keep your house cooler.

Switch to LED light bulbs instead of incandescent lights.  They are cheaper to run and they run cooler so you’re not putting off heat into the room.

Consider installing a timer on your thermostat so you can regulate the temperature to stay cooler when you’re home or sleeping.   It doesn’t make much sense to cool your house when you’re not there.

Your electrician is a good person to call if you are having electrical issues that need attention.  He can also help you determine if your house needs an electrical overhaul.  Maybe you don’t need many repairs but your electric bill is sky high.  Your electrician can evaluate your home and give you advice on what you can do to lower your bill.

Rose Brothers and Sons Electric is a company you can count on.  If you have any questions or need to schedule electric repairs, please call (859) 746-9440

Preparing for BBQ Season With Outdoor Electricity

electricityAdd some electricity to your party!  There are many ways to enhance your deck or patio that will make grilling fun and exciting this summer.  Spring is in the air and it’s time to think about grilling, entertaining and enjoying your home the way you’ve always wanted to.

Outdoor Outlets Provide More Electricity

Adding a few outdoor electrical outlets to your patio or deck is a good way to ensure you can have access to the electricity you want, where you want it.  Do away with extension cords running everywhere.  They are a fire hazard outside and you don’t want your friends or kids tripping on them.

Having more outdoor outlets will allow you to put in fountains and ponds in areas where you couldn’t before.  Adding the sound of running water to your backyard will create a soothing atmosphere that will make you want to linger longer.

Having extra electrical outlets in addition to hardwired electricity gives you the option to change things up and move things around.  You will be able to plug in music, fans or heaters, as you desire.

Outdoor Lighting

Nothing creates ambiance like the right lighting.  If you are planning a barbeque or outdoor party at night, you need outdoor lighting.  Whether you use the lighting for sight or enjoy the look of outdoor lights in your yard, lights can make a huge difference in how you and your guests feel.

Decorative lighting in your yard is beautiful.  Today solar lights are used everywhere.  They are often inexpensive but require batteries or upkeep.  Hardwired lighting is more costly on your fuel bill but can save you money in maintenance.

Festive lighting is very popular for outdoor decks and patios.  A string of white lights or decorative lights add a whimsical touch to any home.  Soft lights at night create a fun atmosphere that screams romance.

Lighting is also an important aspect to your deck.  Having lights around the walkways or steps is a great way to prevent accidents and light up the way.

Outdoor Music

Nothing is as entrancing as outdoor music.  No matter what your musical preference having the music propelled into the yard is the best way to hear it.  Strategically placed speakers can create that enjoyable atmosphere you are wanting.  Lighten up your parties with just the right sound.

With outdoor electricity and wiring, you can enjoy your music from every location instead of just the boom box.   This allows you to either play soft music so everyone can hear it or blast the music throughout your yard so the neighborhood can hear it.

Spring and summer are just around the corner.  It’s time to capture the spirit and plan for your summer parties and barbeques by adding electricity to the mix.  Rose Brothers and Sons Electric can help with all your electrical needs and lighten up your backyard with spectacular nighttime views.  Call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric today and let’s get the party started!

Environmentally Friendly Electricity

electricityEnvironmentally friendly electricity or green electricity is a hot topic in most places these days.  With the high cost of fuel and the worry of our planet’s depleting resources, it is no wonder people everywhere want to go green.   When fuels are burned, carbon dioxide the main gas responsible for climate change is released making power plants environmentally dangerous.  The United States has a higher consumption of fuel than any other country with China being the lowest.  To make matters worse, the United States buys most of it’s fuel and so we have the problem of relying on other countries to produce the large amount we consume.  So we see having environmentally friendly electricity is a two-fold problem.

Where Does Electricity Come From

Power plants create electricity by burning fuels such as gas and coal.   These fossil fuels for the most part come from other countries and will eventually be exhausted.  Finding replacement fuel or energy is what environmentally friendly electricity is all about.

There are many types of renewable energy.  This is energy that won’t be exhausted because Mother Nature replenishes it regularly.  An example of this type of power would be wind power and solar energy.  A large focus is seen, in companies searching for an alternative to gas and Coal.  Wind turbines have developed over the years making them quieter and more dependable.

Besides wind power we also have solar power.  Solar power works by turning sunlight into electricity.  With today’s technology, solar power can work even on cloudy days.  One down fall to solar energy is the cost.    Some homeowners are able to take advantage of solar energy.  Another way they do this is by using the sun’s energy to heat water on the roof before it is either further heated or stored.  14% of your electricity goes to heating water.

Today houses and buildings are being designed with the environment in mind to make maximum use of the sun.  Today much of the energy we currently use heating, lighting and air conditioning our homes can be saved.

If you live near Perry County, you may have heard about bio-mass and the use of burning wood to provide electricity to homes in the area.  This technique burns plant and plant based material and creates energy.  It is thought that the carbon dioxide the plant uses during its life will offset the carbon dioxide released during burning.

Other types of energy that creates electricity are nuclear energy, with it’s own concerns, geothermal energy, hydropower, wave or tidal power, landfill gas and waste incineration.  All these types of power have their drawbacks and so the search for an answer goes on.

What Can Homeowners Do To Save Electricity

There are many things we can do to save electricity.  Turning off lights and lowering or raising our thermostats is all good options.  We can purchase energy efficient appliances.  In 1992 the Energy Star Program started to allow customers to see which appliances were more energy efficient.  On average an appliance with the star will save 30% more in electricity.  Washing machines alone are 60% more energy efficient than they were 20 years ago.  They can save you up to $85 per year.  Not only do they save on electricity but they can use up to 8 fewer gallons per load.

Older appliances and electrical systems are not as energy efficient as they are today.  This is one of the benefits of getting new appliances or having new electricity installed.  Many times you can get rebates for going green and having environmentally friendly electricity or appliances.

If you have any questions please call Rose Brothers & Sons Electricity at (859)746-9440 we will be happy to help you with all your electricity needs.

Northern Kentucky Security lights

security lights in Northern KentuckyYou Don’t have to dig a mote or bury traps for home protection.  Installing security lights in Northern Kentucky is one of many ways you can keep your home intruder proof.  There are many  easy ways to protect your home without breaking your wallet.  Here are just a few to get you started.

Make Sure Doors and Windows Are Secure

Many people make the mistake of not locking their door because they live in a safe neighborhood or maybe they feel locks aren’t much of a deterrent.  Locks, however, do help.  Burglars are looking for an easy mark.  The first thing they’ll do, is test the locks and the doors to see how sturdy they are.  If they feel it will be too hard, they might just pick a different house.  Having exterior lights at the door helps deter intruders and helps keep you safe as you unlock the door.

Sliding glass doors are viewed as an easy target, too.  The locks are usually not too secure and older sliding glass doors come off their hinges easily.  Placing a stick or pipe in the track of the door will keep it from opening even if the lock is busted.  Windows can also be an easy way in.  You can make sure all  your windows only open 6 inches by putting a dowel stick down the side track of the window leaving 6 inches free.  Keep exterior lights on motion sensors around the perimeter of the house to help make an intruder uncomfortable.  Don’t have large shrubs close to windows where an intruder could hide.

Protection Signs

Having a dog, especially a yappy dog is a great way to protect your property.  Thieves don’t want to attract attention or get hurt.  If you don’t have a dog, put a “beware of the dog,” sign up anyway.  When service people come to your house to work, make them wait until you put your dog (or pretend dog) away.

Place a “premises are protected by Xyz Company” by your drive.  This will let any would be burglar know that your house may be under a security system.  Burglars may wonder what you have that needs protection, but they will think twice before entering.

Install Security Lights in Northern Kentucky

Replacing outdoor lights with motion sensor lights will keep you safe without having lights on all night.  They don’t require as much electricity as a security lamp or streetlight because they are not on all the time and usually they aren’t as big.  Having Northern Kentucky security lights that come on when someone is in the target area, can light up any portion of your house or yard where you want to keep intruders away.

You can also install security cameras that capture movement at the doors or windows.  Dummy cameras also work well if you don’t want to spend the money or time monitoring cameras.  Most break-ins happen in the afternoon according to some reports.  Seeing cameras in the daylight will cause a thief to pick another home.  Having cameras near your exterior lights will do the same at night.

As you can see, thieves will pick the easiest target.  They will avoid any house that is hard to enter or presents a threat of getting caught.  It doesn’t always take an expensive security system to protect your house.  Installing exterior lights and security lights in Northern Kentucky will do the trick.

Rose Brothers & Sons Electric would be happy to show you where to place security lights and how to better protect your home with the use of exterior lighting.  There are many benefits to hiring a professional electrician to secure your premisis.  If your interested in protecting your family, please give Rose Brothers & Sons Electric a call today.

How Circuit Breakers Work

Ever wonder why there aren’t more accidents with all the electricity in your house?  Circuit breakers.  They protect the wiring in your house from ruining appliances and starting fires.  Without a circuit breaker, we would be in a world of danger and here’s why.

How Electricity is Designed

Electricity is designed to flow in a closed circuit.  Electricity enters a house from the electrical plant through the hot wire and goes into ground or the neutral wire.  These wires should never touch.  Electrical current flows through a house and meets resistance when it goes into appliances.  The resistance slows the current down and makes sure it flows at a safe level.

What Circuit Breakers Do

circuit breakers

Circuit Breaker

Circuit breakers monitor the flow of electrical current in your house.  Their job is to stop the electricity any time the level of electricity is not safe.  Any spike or fluctuation in the current and the circuit breaker will stop the electricity from flowing.  This can happen when you have a short in the wire and the hot and ground wires are touching or maybe when an appliance overheats and melts the wires causing them to touch.  Faulty wiring, appliance malfunction and many other things can cause your circuit breaker to trip.

Before modern circuit breakers, the circuit breakers were fuses which were nothing more than wires encased in a capsule.  When a current was too high, the fuse would disintegrate, and stop the flow of current.  Each time this happened, it had to be replaced and a new fuse had to be purchased.

Today circuit breakers come in a few electric designs that use either an electromagnet, bimetallic strip, or explosive charge to throw the switch.  After they have been switched off, you just flip the switch back and they are ready to protect again the next time.

The picture on the right is a central circuit breaker panel in the circuit breaker box.  The circuit breakers can go to a group or area in your house, such as, your bedroom.  Circuit breakers can also be used for large appliances like your air conditioner.  The circuit breakers are usually marked so that you know what they are for.  They should all be switched to the same side, in the on position if they are all in use.

More advanced circuit breakers use electronic components and circuitry.  One of these is the GFCI (Ground fault circuit interrupter), These are used in homes to prevent electric shock.  They are commonly seen in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms at the wall socket.  The GFCI monitors the hot and ground wires to make sure they have the same flow.  As soon as the hot wire is slightly different then the ground, the circuit in interrupted.  This happens quickly at the site to prevent electrocution.

If you have any questions about your circuit breakers please call Rose Brothers & Sons Electric. If you are constantly having problems with your circuit breakers tripping it is a good idea to have your wiring checked and the problem repaired.

Electricity Tips for Child Safety

safetyChild safety when it comes to electricity is a matter of being well informed about potential dangers and preventing them if your child is a toddler.  As your child ages, you won’t always be there to protect them.  Teaching them what to avoid and how to protect themselves can save their lives.

Electrical Safety in the House

Cords and power outlets are some of the most common things children get hurt with.  Youngsters are always trying to stick things into light sockets or outlets.  It is important, once your kids are old enough to understand, to teach them about the danger of outlets and sticking things into them.  This will prevent fires and damage to your electrical systems.  Many kids know firsthand that this is not a good idea.

Cords themselves can pose a danger if they are left out in the open for pets to chew or to be tripped over.  Children should be taught to notice if a wire is bare or an outlet is cracked.  Damaged electrical cords can cause a shock.  Teach them to never yank a cord out of the wall too.

Water and electricity don’t mix.  Teach your children to avoid plugging anything into an outlet if it is near standing water.  Never have a radio beside the bathtub or a curling iron.  Accidents happen and the risk is too great.

Electrical Safety Outside

Another area of concern is playing near electrical lines or substations.  Teach your children to look out for power lines when they are flying a kite.  Electricity can go through the string and into your child.  They should never intentionally try to hook something onto a power line.  Climbing a tree is also dangerous because the power lines can be hidden in the branches.  Electricity can travel through the branch and hurt your child.

Roofs are also dangerous.  Many power lines are attached to the home at the roof.  Make sure if a toy or ball goes on the roof, your kids will wait for an adult to get it.

Teach your children what a “Keep Out” sign or hazard signs look like.  If an area is fenced off, there is a reason.   If your child’s pet or toy gets inside a fenced off area, have them ask for help.  Many times there is a number on the fence to call.  Only authorized individuals should enter.

These are just a few of the ways children can learn about electrical safety.  If you notice an area in your house that could potentially cause a fire or be unsafe please call Rose Brothers & Sons Electricity and have the problem taken care of before its too late.
