Remodeling Your Basement in Northern Kentucky

remodeling your basement in Northern KentuckyPlanning on remodeling your Northern Kentucky Basement? Before you start making big changes, make sure you consider these important electrical installations. Besides adding lights and electrical equipment, these electrical additions will keep you within code and keep your family safe.

Hardwired Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are one area of your planning where you shouldn’t skimp. We always suggest installing hardwired smoke detectors in the basement. If there were a fire in your basement, these would keep your family safe. They are hooked up to the rest of the smoke detectors in your home. If a fire started in the basement, the smoke detector would turn the alarm on and all the smoke detectors hardwired to the system would set off at the same time. This means that your family has more time to escape a fire that started in the basement and less damage would occur before it reached the upper floors where closer alarms would alert you.

Proper Basement Outlets

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) and AFCI (Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters) will keep your family and home safe from electrical damage and electrocution in the case of a fire or flood. You also need safe electrical wiring for sump pumps and other electrical equipment.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Your basement is a good place for carbon monoxide to build up. Many basements have gas appliances like hot-water heaters and furnaces or boilers that potentially produce carbon monoxide. By the time your carbon monoxide detectors on the upper floors detected the gas, it would already be at dangerous levels.

Is Doing Your Own Electrical Work Worth It?

is doing your own electrical work worth it?Maintaining your home requires a little bit of work and money. Often you can take care of some of the repairs and upkeep yourself. At some point, you may need electrical repairs done or you may need some electrical upgrades. You may be a do-it-yourselfer who likes to save money fixing and repairing things yourself, but what you have to consider: is doing your own electrical work worth it?

The Cost of Electrical Repairs

Sure if you do it yourself, you only have the cost of the parts, not any labor. Sometimes however you have to buy parts in bulk or buy more than you need and you end up paying for parts you don’t use. If you hire an electrician in Northern Kentucky you only pay for the parts they use. You will pay for the time of a Master Electrician but what your getting is all the years of experience and knowledge they have. They are also licensed and insured which is an added protection to you as a homeowner.

The Time Involved

If you are working on your electrical system, and you’re not an expert, it will take you a lot longer then someone who does it everyday. You have to learn as you go and try different things. You may not really know what the problem is right off and replace parts that don’t really need replaced. Or you may fix the problem not realizing the problem was a symptom of another problem. When it comes to your electrical system, do you really want to take chances?

Is Doing Your Own Electrical Work Worth It?

If you decide to do your own electrical work then you need to be aware of when it is necessary to get a permit. You also need to be aware of codes and safety concerns. You don’t want to end up fixing a $30. Problem only to realize it will cost you hundreds of dollars because you made a mistake or started a fire.   You also don’t want to rig your electrical system and find out later it won’t pass an inspection. This can require more money and time when you may not have either.

The Best Solution

When you need electrical repairs or electrical upgrades, it makes sense to call a licensed electrician in Northern Kentucky who can get the job done quickly and done right. Some things are better left to the professionals and electrical repairs and upgrades fall into that category.   For you and your family’s safety and a job well done call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric today.

Home Electricity and Preventing Power Outages

electrical contractorHome electricity is a necessity Americans have come to depend on. We need electric for lights, cooking, cleaning and in some cases life-support. It wasn’t too long ago in our history that people lived without electricity. Today, when the power goes out, we are left in limbo and inconvenienced until the lights come back on. Some areas have experienced many problems associated with power outages that have left families devastated and businesses without revenue. Fortunately most hospitals and public areas have backup power to depend on. Here are a few of the causes of power outages and what you can do to prepare for them.

Weather Causing Power Outages

Most of the power outages in the Northern Kentucky area are caused by weather. Snow, rain, ice and wind can all take a toll on electrical systems. Although it is almost impossible to plan for a flood or tornado, you can take precaution to protect your electrical system from damage from water, moisture and dust. Dust and water can damage your home electricity causing serious costly repairs. Sealed circuit boxes help protect your electrical system from water damage. Where your electric boxes are, also helps. More severe weather concerns have sometimes left entire regions without power. You may not be able to prevent such catastrophes, but you can prepare for them. Having candles, canned food, extra water or a back-up electric generator can help.

Other Causes of Power Outages

Other power outages result when power lines and wires are damaged. Large animals and birds can sometimes cause power outages. Other outages occur when automobiles wreck into power lines or the power company is working on power lines sometimes power outages are the result of human error. Other power outages are the direct result of short circuits. This is when the electrical current takes a wrong path causing excess in electrical current that can lead to circuit damage, fire or explosion. Short circuits are one of the primary causes of fires in the area. Short circuits occur for many reasons, damaged wires, water or other conducting material that comes in contact with the current. Motors that are jammed can also cause a short circuit.

Preventing Power Outages with Good Electrical Installations

One way to prevent power outages and short circuits is to make sure you have good quality materials in place in your electrical system. Make sure you hire a certified electrician who will install your electrical system the right way without cutting corners. Wires should always be good quality and the right gauge for your application. Pumps, pistons, rotors and other moving parts should be inspected and maintained to prevent short circuits caused by jammed equipment. Circuits should not be overloaded. High quality circuit breakers and fuses should be used to protect against circuit overload. All circuit breakers and electrical wiring should be kept away from water and moisture. Besides power outages, your electrical system should also be able to withstand the problems of power surges and low voltage. If you have questions about your home electricity, call your trusted electrical contractor, Rose Brothers and Sons Electric. They will be happy to help you.

Protecting Your Electrical System During a Storm

protecting your electrical system during a stormIt is hard to imagine, March is right around the corner and Daylight Saving Time will soon begin. Winter and early spring storms often cause power outages. Your local power company will resolve many of these power outages, but more often than not, the power outage can cause home electrical problems. You can protect your electrical system before a major storm to prevent the need for emergency electrical repairs in Northern Kentucky.

Protecting Your Electrical System During A Storm

Although you may experience many storms in your lifetime, it only takes one storm to damage your electrical system, appliances, electrical wiring, wall outlets and other electrical gadgets in your home. Another problem can occur if lightening strikes.
According to the National Geographic, lightening can travel phone lines and electrical wiring. You should unplug appliances and never use the phone when lightening or a thunderstorm is near. Your washer and dryer is a triple threat because it has electrical wiring, plumbing and a vent that connects it to the outside. Most people don’t go around unplugging appliances but caution should be taken if a storm is close. Turning the power off at the circuit breaker or using a good surge protector can help.  Surge Protectors do not protect against direct lightening strikes.

Types of Surge Protectors

• Surge Arrester – This is a whole-house system that is installed in or near a home’s main electric service panel and offers protection against voltage surges up to 20,000 volts (such as a lightning strike).
• Surge Suppressor – This surge protection device is a power strip that can handle up to 6,000 volts. A surge suppressor protects only the electrical equipment that is plugged into it.
Both types of surge protectors will also protect your appliances from electrical surges as the electricity is turned back on.

Emergency Electrical Services in Northern Kentucky

Most people who experience a power outage will begin to wonder if their neighbors are experiencing the same thing. They will either look across the street to see if lights are on or they’ll call their neighbor down the road. If you notice your neighborhood has lost power and then when it comes back on you still have no power, you may want to call for 24 hour a day emergency electrical service. You may also notice that the power is back on but one or more of your appliances are not working properly. This type of damage should be considered serious and an electrician should investigate to make sure your home is safe. For your safety and the safety of your family, you are better off erring on the side of precaution and having an electrical inspection to make sure there is no potential for house fires later on. For electrical repairs and service, call your electrical contractor in Northern Kentucky, Rose Brothers and Sons Electric and they will be happy to help you.

Winter Weather Tips From Your Electrician

winter weather tips from your electricianThe danger of winter weather varies from county to county across the United States. Record-breaking snowfall and extremely cold temperatures have the possibility of knocking out heat, power and communications.  Check your weather in Northern Kentucky often to be aware of the possible conditions. Dangerously low temperatures; freezing rain, ice and sleet can cause horrific driving conditions too. Here are a few winter weather tips from your electrician.

Don’t Travel During Snow Storms

Stay indoors during winter storms. If you must travel avoid back roads and shortcuts. Don’t travel alone if possible and make sure your friends and family know where you’re going and the route you are taking. Don’t rely on cell phones during winter storms.

Use Caution Shoveling Snow

Take caution to walk carefully on snowy, icy sidewalks and driveways. Don’t overexert yourself when you’re shoveling snow. Go slow, move small amounts of snow at a time and use extreme caution. Heart attacks are a major cause of death in the winter. Keep dry and change out of your wet clothes often. Dry clothes insulate better and hold the heat in.

Avoid Frostbite

Dress warmly and keep your body, fingers and toes covered and dry.  Frostbite occurs when the skin and body tissue under the skin freezes. Loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance on fingers, toes, earlobes and your face can be seen. Cover the skin without rubbing it and seek medical attention if you suspect frostbite.

Avoid Hypothermia

Dangerously low body temperature, uncontrollable shaking, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness and exhaustion are signs of hypothermia. If you suspect hypothermia, take the person’s temperature. If it is below 95 degrees, seek medical attention immediately. Wrap the person in warm clothes and blankets and give warm drinks until help arrives. Hypothermia requires medical attention so seek help immediately.

Use Alternative Heaters Wisely

If using kerosene heaters make sure you have plenty of ventilation. Refuel the heater outside and keep the heater away from flammables. Lower your thermostat to conserve fuel and close off vents to rooms that are not in use. If you are going away, turn your thermostat down but no lower than 55 degrees.

Winter Weather Tips From Your Electrician

Many times during a severe winter storm, you might experience power outages. These are often due to downed trees, ice and wind. Occasionally you may need to hire an electrician to handle repairs in your house or on your property. If you need assistance with electrical repairs this winter, call an electrician at Rose Brothers and Sons electric.

Adding Outdoor Electricity

adding outdoor electricityAdding outdoor electricity or extra outdoor lights, has many advantages. Many people choose to add outdoor electrical outlets or permanent outdoor lighting for all kinds of reasons. Convenience and Security top the list. Here are a few of the benefits:

Outdoor Lighting

Decorative Lights

Outdoor lighting can add a bit of ambiance to your yard. Whether you are hanging strings of lights on your patio or lighting an area of your yard, you will enjoy outdoor lights for their purely aesthetic appeal. Solar lights are very popular today, but normally they don’t last long and the batteries are expensive to replace. Good outdoor lights will last for years with little or no upkeep.

Security Lights

Adding outdoor lights for security can give you peace of mind at night. You can add a security light that stays on all the time.   This is a great deterrent to thieves. You can program them to come on, use light sensors or timers to turn them on or manually turn them on with a switch. You can also add security lights that work on motion sensors. This will notify you if movement is going on around your house. They work great but can be triggered by animals walking by or trees if they are too close.

Outdoor Electrical Outlets

It seems you always have a need for an outdoor outlet where you don’t have one. You will find adding outdoor electrical outlets to be very convenient. This is especially true if you need electricity in a location away from the house. Running extension chords, even if they are heavy duty just don’t work well after a great distance.

Adding Electricity To Your Shed or Barn

If you’re tired of going to the shed to find something with a flashlight in the dark, maybe it’s time to add electricity to the shed. You will find it is so much easier to see what you’re doing and what you’re getting into. You can also add outlets and heating and air if you want. Adding electricity to your shed will enable you to use your shed in new ways and more ways.

Hiring An Electrician When Adding Outdoor Electricity

Whatever your reason for wanting outdoor electricity, you will find Rose Brothers & Sons Electric are well trained, dependable and professional. Your electric job will be done with expertise and care so that you can rely on it for years to come. Whenever you need an electrician, you can trust Rose Brothers & Sons Electric. Space Heater Safety

space heater safetyMany people resort to using space heaters to keep warm in the winter. They work great and do a good job when they are used properly. Unfortunately many people don’t know enough about using a space heater to keep them safe. According to a NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) report in 2013, over half the deaths caused by heater related fires resulted from improper use of space heaters. Here are a few precautions to help you use Space Heaters Wisely.

It Matters Where You Place Your Space Heater

One of the leading causes of space heater fires results from space heaters being placed to close to combustible items or items that burn easily. Keep your space heater away from combustible storage items and cleaning supplies. Don’t put your space heater too close to upholstered furniture, bedding, clothes or mattresses. Keep children and pets away from your heater and teach them to avoid it .

Combustion Space Heaters

Space heaters come in 2 types, those you plug in and those that operate with combustible propane or kerosene. Combustion heaters should only be used outdoors in well-ventilated areas. Because they give off carbon monoxide fumes, they should never be used in enclosed areas. Even tents and other outdoor situations don’t create enough ventilation to make using a combustion heater safe. They can get extremely hot and can ignite combustible items quickly.

Electric Space Heaters

Electric Space heaters can be used indoors. There are several different kinds of electric space heaters. Small space heaters are ideal for rooms around 100 sq. feet (about 10×10). They can have metal coils or ceramic encased wires. They normally have 2 settings and can operate on 1000 watts or 1500 watts. Some have oscillating fans to spread the heat over a larger area. Larger rooms are best kept warm with convection units or electric radiators because they are quieter and don’t use a fan. They can come in upright designs or baseboard heaters.

Do Space Heaters Save You Money?

Space Heaters that run off electric are more expensive to run than other heaters. The only way you can save money using a space heater is if you turn the thermostat down in other areas of the house to offset the use of the electric. This works well if you spend the majority of your time in a single room or you have a home office or workshop you need to keep warm.

Space Heater Safety – Use Space Heaters Wisely

Newer Space heaters are safer. They have grills to protect you from burns, safety thermostats that turn off when it’s too hot or the space heater tips over.   Heaters for bathrooms and wet areas need to be rated for damp areas to avoid causing electrical shorts.

Space Heaters require a lot of electrical current. The cords can become hot. Don’t use an extension cord and never run the heater cord under a rug or furniture where a fire might get started. If you have to use an extension cord make sure it is rated for the load your heater has.

Be careful when you choose to use a space heater. Place it away from anything that will burn and use precaution.

If you have any safety concerns about your heating system or electrical system, call Rose Brothers and Sons Electric and they will be happy to help you. Don’t put up with annoying electrical problems when you have trusted electricians only a phone call away.
