The Ins and Outs of Outdoor Accent Lighting

First impressions are everything! This goes for meeting new people, when you test drive a car and of course when you pull up to someone’s home for the first time. But don’t forget about your home. If your grass is uncut and your siding is peeling, people might jump to unfortunate conclusions. Just like keeping up with the maintenance of your home, adding simple design touches makes your home look even better! Here at Rose Brothers & Sons Inc Electric and Construction, we can help you achieve the look you desire with accent lighting. We specialize in residential, commercial, and industrial electric construction, so no matter if you need service on your home or office, we have the right tools and professionals to make the job fast and efficient. We have been servicing Northern KY and Cincinnati for decades and would love to have the opportunity to serve you and your family as well.

Your home’s curb appeal can be affected by the things you choose to do and not do to the exterior of your home and lawn. Adding additional accent lighting is a great idea and can have a major impact on your home, but where should you place your new lighting? Well since the way to get to your home is to drive up your driveway, we should start there. You can purchase a variety of styles of accent lighting for your driveway. You can choose to have solar LED lights in the form of in-ground or above-ground posts. The best thing about lighting up your driveway with solar lights is that it won’t reflect on your energy bill.

Flowers and gardens also play a big role in curb appeal. If you have a beautiful flower bed, why should it be hidden in the dark? Adding accent lighting to your flower bed will highlight nature’s beauty throughout the night and late evenings.

Homes always come with porch and garage lighting. But if you want your home to stand out in a good way, adding down lighting, up lighting, or cross lighting to the exterior can be the solution. Each lighting position brings a different effect to your home and landscape, so no matter if you want a dramatic or romantic feel, our installation crew can achieve it.

With our history of experience and professionalism, we can provide you and your family services from pool lighting to circuits in newly built homes and everything else in-between. Rose Brothers & Sons Inc. Electrical and Construction is located in Walton, KY and built on hard work and ethic, and we proudly serve all of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. It will be our absolute pleasure to serve you with all of your electrical needs.

Get an Electrical Safety Inspection in the New Year

electrical safety inspection

It may be the holiday season, but it is always the season to practice safety and to be prepared for unforeseen events. With all of the shopping and decorating, it would not be hard to miss out on something that could cause potential harm to your family in the far or near future. Busy schedules can definitely get in the way of inspecting your home, which is why you should always let the professionals do the work for you. Our electricians at Rose Brothers & Sons Inc. Electric and Construction would love to be the ones to get your home ready for the holidays with an electrical safety inspection! They are highly trained and certified in residential, commercial, and industrial electric, and our company has been serving Northern KY, and Cincinnati for over four decades. We can handle anything from smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector installation to circuit breaker replacement or underground cabling. With the new year right around the corner, think about making your New Year’s resolution to be keeping you and your family safe year-round by getting an electrical safety inspection.

Everyone knows that when you are in the process of buying or selling a home, at some point, you will have to get a professional electrician to conduct an inspection. Did you know that you should also inspect your home throughout the years for safety purposes? One of the main reasons for house fires is faulty wiring. We do not expect you to be able to solve this problem on your own, but there are some clues to help you figure out if you should get an electrical safety inspection. Have you ever plugged in an iron, toaster, or vacuum cleaner and notice that the lights in the rest of the room flickered or got dim? If so, that could be a big sign that your home has some faulty wiring. It would be smart to get an electrical inspection before something accidentally catches on fire, which could happen easily during the month of December.

Decorating for Christmas is always exciting, but with a large display of lights outside and a light-covered tree comes an over loaded electrical outlet. Power strips can help reduce your risk, but you will never be 100% safe using every port without inspecting your home. A lot of furnaces produce carbon monoxide, so it is crucial to get an inspection due to the extensive use of heat during the winter and holiday season. This could be dangerous because carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, making it impossible for you to know if you are breathing it in until it is too late. You and your family’s health, safety, and well-being are nothing to take chances on. Give Rose Brothers & Sons Electric and Construction a call today! We are ready to put your family out of harm’s way.

With over 41 years of experience, you can be confident that our friendly experts at Rose Brothers & Sons Electric will give your home a thorough inspection. We are located in Walton, KY and would be glad to assist you in making your home safer for the holiday season. Give us a call today!

Thinking of Switching to LED Bulbs? We Can Help!

LED

While lighting and light bulbs are usually low on your to do list, they rank very high on the list for great design techniques. Since every room in your home needs lighting to function properly, you should only want the highest quality light bulbs. There is a wide variety of different light bulbs out there, including compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), incandescent light bulbs, Halogen light bulbs, and the ever-popular light emitting diode light bulbs (LED). Have you ever wondered how LED light bulbs became so popular? People that wanted to move away from generic bulbs did their research and found out that they are all around better for their home. They found that LED bulbs could also save them money, and good news travels fast! Our trusted electricians at Rose Brothers & Son’s Inc Electric and Construction , located in Walton, KY, know all the ins and outs about anything dealing with electricity, and it would be our pleasure to pass on our knowledge to you!

You work hard for the things you have, so why not make them work for you? When you choose non-LED bulbs, rather than saving money on your electric bill, they can actually cause it to be higher. Plus, you have to replace them fairly often. Along with LED lights being environmentally friendly, they are also pocket friendly. The upfront cost of LED bulbs may be a little more, but the long-term savings are definitely worth a few extra bucks now.

Do you have random lights in your home that are different colors? That does not means that you have one room that is vibrant green and another room purple, but different hues of yellow. The difference in colors can be distracting to the eye, especially if it’s happening in one room where one side of your room is a warm yellow and the other side is a more of a lighter yellow. With LED lights, you can choose to have a specific light color. That way, you can have the mood set for your room without having to use dimmers. A cooler blue light is one of the more popular choices.

You don’t only have to place LED lights inside of your home. You can and should also place them in highly used areas outside of your home. If you are like most people, you probably forget to turn your front porch and garage light off when you leave for work in the morning. Wouldn’t you feel better knowing that you are still saving 85% more energy when you use LED light bulbs? Start spending less time buying and changing incandescent light bulbs and start saving time and money with LED light bulbs.

At Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, we have the knowledge and expertise to help you with all of your electrical needs, from knowledge about changing your light bulbs all the way up to rewiring your entire house. With over 45 years of experience, you can be confident that our family-owned company will get the job done right the first time. We proudly serve Northern KY, and Cincinnati.

Does Your Home Need New Outlets

outlets

While it may seem like an easy job, it can take much more than a quick scan of your room to determine if your home needs new outlets. Even if you have “hidden” outlets that are out of sight and out of mind, they still need to be inspected and potentially replaced. Regularly inspecting your outlets could save you from overlooking clues to determine if you should upgrade or not. At Rose Brothers & Son’s Electric and Construction, we know the importance of properly wired and visually appealing electrical outlets because they have the potential to be extremely harmful if the issues are left untreated. We are located in Walton, KY, so let us help you get your home in the best shape it has been in since you bought it. If you have a newly built home, we need to make sure it stays in tip top shape. For decades, we have been assisting residents in Northern KY and Cincinnati with electrical contracting and residential services, and we would be thrilled to be trusted with any task you throw our way.

Selling a home can be an overwhelming process with all of the improvements and updates you or a hired professional might have to make. You can save yourself some hassle by regularly inspecting your power outlets while living in your home. Even though you are checking your outlets, do you know what you should be looking for? One thing that should get your attention is cracks in your outlet plate. Not because they are unpleasant to look at, but because they can be a prime location for house fires to begin, and nobody wants to get that call. Dust can build up in your home, no matter how often you try to clean it, and it can be anywhere, even into those cracks in your power outlet. The dust builds up in those cracks, and that is how fires start and homes are ruined.

When buying a new home, you should always get the home inspected, because it’s somewhere you are planning to house your family. That inspection should not just be on the roof or the foundation, but should also include the electrical system. Our team members at Rose Brothers & sons Inc. Electrical and Construction, can provide you with a detailed electric system inspection along with many other skills and services. We know how much home buyers love homes with character, like historic homes. The only problem with historic homes is that they are usually at least a century old, and that means the home’s electrical system will need some updating and rewiring. Two prong outlets can be dangerous to you and your expensive gadgets. If you happen to visit a home that has a lot of two prong outlets rather than having three prong power outlets, then you know you will have some work to do if you decide to buy. However, you won’t have to do it alone, because we are always ready to assist you.

How to Dispose of Your Gadgets in an Environmentally Friendly Way

gadgets

Believe it or not, there may come a time when need to find a way to dispose of your laptop, tablet, or smartphone. It probably won’t be that you’re swearing off technology, but rather that you just updated to a newer version and no longer need the old one. Your first thought may be to just toss your gadgets into the garbage can with your regular household trash, but that may not be the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of them. There are many alternative ways to dispose of your gadgets. Gadgets can also include your smoke detector, an old alarm system, or even your garage door opener. Here at Rose Brothers & Sons Inc. Electric and Construction, we want to provide you with the proper information, so you can do what’s best for you and your community. We are located in Walton, KY and serve Northern KY and Cincinnati. For several decades, our team of professional electricians and contractors have been working on the inside and outside of homes to make them more environmentally friendly.

This even includes the end of some of our projects, when we have to dispose of some materials and gadgets.
When someone chooses to go green, they most likely did not make the decision just because it sounds cool or because everyone is doing it. However, we want to get the word out about going green, so hopefully everyone will be doing it. Because most gadgets contain toxic substances like lead and mercury, it is very important that you dispose of them in the proper manner. One of the best ways to ensure this is done properly is by taking all your electronics and gadgets to a recycler. We don’t mean the blue recycling bin, but a company whose job it is to safely recycle and dispose of electronics that can be bad for the environment if not disposed of properly. When disposing of gadgets, the first step you should take is to erase any personal items on your hard drive. This way, no one can access it after you dispose of it. After you have cleared your computer, call up a recycling program, and they can give you information on any drop off locations they may have.

Life is busy, so it may be hard for you to find time to drive around and find somewhere to safely dispose of your gadgets. The good thing is, most of these companies offer pick up services, so you never have to leave the comfort of your own home. Just let them know what day and time you are available, and they will work with you, making it easy to properly get rid of your electronics and keep the environment healthy! If you don’t want to just throw away some gadgets because they still work well, consider donating them to someone else who might need them. Why get rid of something that still works if you have the chance to pass it on to someone in need?

Do You Need a New Microwave?

microwave

Almost every household in America has a microwave. Whether it’s used for cooking, heating up leftovers, or even sanitizing a dirty sponge, it just makes life easier. If your microwave isn’t working as well as it did when you bought it, it might be time for a new one. At Rose Brothers & Sons Inc. Electric and Construction, we want to give you the information that you need to decide whether you do need a new microwave. With 25 years of experience, our electricians are very skilled and well-trained in all areas, including commercial, industrial, and residential electric construction. If you do need a new one, we can help you figure out which kind will work best for your family and even install it for you.

What are some signs that you need a new microwave? One of the easiest ways to find out if you need a new microwave is to inspect it visually. It isn’t always possible to remove all the germs from your appliance, even if you clean it often. Even a microwave that you just cleaned can appear discolored on the inside. This discoloration can be the result of millions of food particles left behind over years of use. Even though yours works well, that does not necessarily mean you should still be using it. A new microwave can keep your family safer from food contaminants.

From a studio apartment all the way to a five-star restaurant, kitchens come in all sizes. If you have a smaller kitchen that can’t handle a bulky, old microwave, it may be time to look for a new one. Nothing kills counter space more than a large microwave on a small countertop. When you make the right choice in partnering with Rose Brothers & Sons Inc. Electric and Construction, you can be confident that you are only getting the best! Our electricians will discuss all the available options for your new microwave, including the best location and height to install it. We will even install it for you.

If you are planning to purchase a new home, that may also be a sign that it is time for a new microwave. Rather than bringing the old one from your previous apartment, get a brand new one that can use less energy and save you money in the long run. You can also pick one that matches the style you want to achieve in your new kitchen, rather than styling your new kitchen to match your old appliance.

Whether you just need your old appliance replaced or you are remodeling your kitchen and want to have a microwave installed over your stove rather than setting one on the counter, we have the knowledge and expertise to help you get the job done. Our electricians are experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly, so you can be sure you are getting the best products and service. We are located in Walton, KY, and we are proud to serve Northern KY and Cincinnati. Call us today to get your estimate!

Keeping Your Pets Safe Around Electricity

pets

Your pet is a loved and well-cared for member of your family. Many pet owners go to lengths such as removing dangerous plants from their home and buying new storage and disposal items for their kitchens to keep their pets safe. While these are excellent pet safety tips that everyone should do, many pet owners overlook one of the biggest dangers in the home for their pets: electricity. Electrical cords, wires, and devices can be incredibly dangerous for pets and it is important that you take precautions before an incident occurs. Let Rose Brothers & Sons Electric, serving Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, help you keep your animals safe around electricity with these few simple tips.

Cords and Cables

It is very easy to forget that cords and wires are lying about in and outside of your home. They are small, usually hidden behind something, and may only be moved once every week or so if that. Your pets might not see cords the same way. Because pets are naturally curious of their surroundings, they will stick their noses (and mouths) in any space they can fit. While cords do not pose a threat if they are touched, often times animals explore new things with their teeth and this can cause a major problem. Not only will your cords be ruined by chewing, your pets will likely sustain injuries and risk electrocution when they chew through live wires. Keep cords that are removable, like chargers for laptops and phones, put away in a drawer. Cords that sit on the floors should be secured against the wall or covered with electrical tape, and you should always pay attention when your pet is near that area. Exposed, live electrical wires that are outside your home should be covered properly to make sure that there is no risk for a dangerous incident.

Electrical Devices

Now that your cords are in a safe space away from your pet, your electrical device is also a concern. Again, because animals like to explore with their mouths, electrical devices are not safe from being a potential hazard. Keep your small electrical devices stored in areas where animals cannot reach, like drawers, separate rooms, or on surfaces that they cannot reach. These devices will not only be ruined by curious mouths, but your pets could be injured with their curiosity.

Ingestion

While the threat of electrocution and injury are scary enough, when your animal swallows wiring or pieces of an electrical device the problem can be even worse. While wiring will likely pass through your pet’s digestive system with ease, the electrocution from ingesting live wiring will leave sores or worse on the inside of your pet’s mouth and throat. These sores have the potential to become infected if they are not treated properly. In addition, the small pieces of electrical devices, like a cell phone or a e-reader, have a very high likelihood of being poisonous to your animals if they are ingested. If your pets swallow pieces of your electrical device it is incredibly important that you take them to a vet as fast as possible.

Keeping Your Food Fresh During a Power Outage

power outage

With winter quickly approaching, it is important that you are prepared for the possibility of a power outage. Because winter storms can cause damage to power lines, it is not uncommon for homes to lose power during one of these storms. Because food is expensive, especially a full refrigerator and freezer’s worth, a power outage can end up costing you a lot of money when it comes time to replace all the food that you had. At Rose Brothers & Sons Electric of Walton, Kentucky, we want to give you a few tips on keeping your food fresh during a power outage to help you save money and time once your electricity returns.

Ahead of Time

Before your electricity goes out, there are a few things you should have prepared to ensure that you can keep your food fresh during a power outage. First, make sure you have coolers on hand. Many people keep coolers in their home, but if you don’t have one, you should invest in a few. Coolers last for years and having them on hand will always be a convenience. Second, ensure that you have proper working thermometers in your appliances. This will be necessary when you need to monitor the temperature of your refrigerator after a power outage. Third, know where you can buy dry ice. Many ice cream parlors, ice companies, and other large stores like Walmart and Safeway carry dry ice. Dry ice has a very short shelf-life and therefore you cannot just keep it on hand in your home. Fourth, consider investing in a standby generator for emergencies.

When Power is Lost

If a winter or bad rain storm hits and you do lose power, the first thing you should do to ensure the freshness of your food is keep your refrigerator and freezer shut for as long as possible. Opening and closing your refrigerator and freezer will only allow the cool air to escape and decrease the amount of time that you can keep your perishable items in the appliance. If kept shut, a refrigerator can keep a stable temperature for about 4 hours. Half-freezers will keep things cold for about 24 hours and a full freezer will keep things cold for about 48 hours. Second, go to one of the stores that you know sells dry ice and buy dry ice for coolers and for the refrigerator. Place this dry ice in your refrigerator and freezer to keep the temperature low for a longer amount of time. Third, place all frozen meat on a tray because as the meat thaws it will leak. Lastly, if the power is not returned within a few hours, you need to be monitoring the temperature in your refrigerator and then move things to a cooler when the temperature gets too low. Anything perishable, like meats and dairy products, kept above 40 °F for more than two hours will need to be discarded. To avoid this, move your refrigerated food to a cooler lined with dry ice and ice and use your thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature.

After Power is Restored

After the power in your home is restored, it is important that you check your food to ensure that it is still good. Look for ice crystals to ensure that frozen food is still good, and throw away any foods that have gained a strange odor or color. Anything that feels warm to the touch needs to be disposed of. For a more detailed chart on when to discard and keep food, click here.

If you have questions about generators, electrical damages to your home that may have caused a power outage, or need other electrical advice to prepare your home for power outages, contact Rose Brothers & Sons Electric today. Serving all of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, our team of experienced professionals can help you with a wide range of electrical needs.
